Man City assets falter in Double Gameweek audition

Manchester City players largely faltered in their audition for Double Gameweek 25 as they were defeated 2-1 by Newcastle.

It was a game in which the defending champions struggled to fashion many clear cut opportunities and after labouring they were stunned by their spirited hosts.

How their key options fared at St James Park, ahead of a crucial double set of Fantasy Premier League matches next time around, is the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Newcastle 2-1 Manchester City

Goals: Salomón Rondón (£5.7m), Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) | Sergio Aguero (£11.3m)

Assists: Isaac Hayden (£4.3m), Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) | David Silva (£8.5m)

Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) was perhaps the only Manchester City option to come off well ahead of Double Gameweek 25, as he scored in the 2-1 defeat to Newcastle. Not only did he find the net in the opening exchanges, but he was also the only player in the match to register more than one shot on target. The Argentinian had three efforts in the penalty area, matched only by David Silva (£8.5m), and collected maximum bonus points.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) was incredibly underwhelming, not registering a single shot in the entire match. Typically very active in the opposition penalty area, he managed just three touches of the ball in that area of the pitch. The fact that he played 90 minutes at St James’ Park and is always under threat of rotation, options such as Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) or Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) waiting in the wings, could reduce his appeal ahead of the Double Gameweek. Aguero’s 90-minute display may also count against him too when managers are recruiting in the next few days, as Gabriel Jesus (£10.1m) played just 17 minutes.

“It was not our best night. We lost second balls, we were not aggressive enough, that’s why we could not win.” – Pep Guardiola

It was a mixed evening for owners of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) who were would have been happy to see the German in the starting XI once again. He has now featured from the beginning in 11 of Manchester City’s last 12 Premier League matches. However, Sané’s blank was the first time he failed to be involved in a goal since Gameweek 20 when he featured only as a late substitute. The silver lining on the Gameweek 24 two-pointer was the fact that Sané was withdrawn in the 72nd minute which would suggest he is being prepped to start at least the first match of Double Gameweek 25.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) was, again, not named in the matchday squad as he continues to struggle with his comeback from injury. Pep Guardiola insisted he was much better ahead of Gameweek 24, but preferred instead to leave him out. That means we will likely have to wait until his pre-match press conference on Friday before assessing his chances of being involved in Double Gameweek 25 and factored into the team selection picture.

The aforementioned Silva was a rare bright spark in Manchester City’s midfield, appearing the only one to have the aggressiveness about his game that Guardiola explained his team was missing in the encounter. He inadvertently provided the assist for Aguero’s opener and could have had a goal of his own later in the first half had he put more power on a close-range header.

Kevin de Bruyne (£9.7m) started for the second time in a row and was level with Silva for chances created in the game. However, as tempers boiled in the second half he was withdrawn by Guardiola. That might mean he is a little fresher to play a decent role in the Double Gameweeks. Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) played just 25 minutes and seems assured of a place in at least the Arsenal match, while de Bruyne may have the advantage over David Silva on account of the latter’s 90-minute outing at Newcastle.

The defeat was indicative of the underlying problems within Manchester City’s defence this season. They came into Gameweek 24 with the best goal attempts conceded in the box total over the previous four matches, and yet still conceded twice from the three efforts Newcastle mustered there on Tuesday night. A number of teams have scored on Guardiola’s men with their first attacks of matches in 2018/19, and Newcastle continued that trend by making the most of the few opportunities that came their way.

“They shot twice. The first was the goal and the second was the penalty. We had the chances but when that happens, everything is open. Congratulations to Newcastle for the victory.” – Pep Guardiola

With that in mind, Manchester City defensive options look even less attractive for the Double Gameweek now. Ederson (£5.6m) and Aymeric Laporte (£6.1m) were the only two real candidates for inclusion considering Guardiola’s rotation policy, but their prices do not offer much value. Neither of them can offer much goal threat on top of their poor clean sheet potential, with Arsenal and Everton their opponents. The Gunners have averaged two goals per away match this season while the Toffees have netted in four of their last five played at Goodison Park.n four of their last five played

Rafa Benitez once again demonstrated his importance to Newcastle as he orchestrated a sensational victory for his side. Many other sides would have panicked after conceding in the 25th second of the match against Manchester City and been picked apart for the rest of the encounter, but the former Liverpool boss kept his players calm and collected. Rather than send them charging up the pitch to get back into the game, Benitez’s men kept it tight, absorbed City’s pressure and did their damage in the second half once they had some wind in their sails.

“It was a great effort from everyone and to win against a team as good as Manchester City. They have everything. They are so good so when you get three points against them you know the players have done really well. Everyone was fighting for each other. We had a couple of situations where they were dangerous on the counter-attack but on the whole we defended well. The game plan was not to concede in the first minute but we reacted very well. We changed things at half-time and we were good enough to score two goals.” – Rafa Benitez

Fabian Schär (£4.6m) demonstrated his credentials once again, but for a different reason than his two-goal performance against Cardiff. Rather than impressing going forward, this time the Swiss international was a rock at the back, topping the Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) tally for the match with nine.

Salomón Rondón (£5.7m) was the man to get Newcastle back in the game, and now has attacking returns in his last two home matches. He assisted against Cardiff before netting on Tuesday night. However, his crucial goal against Manchester City came from just one effort in the whole game, suggesting he remains a budget asset to avoid for now. That particular statistic further proves how fragile City’s defence is though, very little required from opposition to break through it.

Matt Ritchie (£5.8m) was officially Newcastle’s most dangerous player on the night with his two efforts on goal, although one of those was his second-half penalty. The Scottish international further staked his claim on spot-kicks by dispatching the winning goal after Sean Longstaff (£4.5m) was fouled in the area.

Newcastle United XI (5-4-1): Dubravka; Ritchie, Lejeune, Lascelles, Schär, Yedlin; Atsu (Kenedy 87′), Longstaff, Hayden, Pérez (Manquillo 90+1′); Rondón.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3): Ederson; Danilo (Gündogan 83′), Laporte, Stones, Walker; D Silva, Fernandinho, De Bruyne (B Silva 65′); Sané (Jesus 73′), Aguero, Sterling.

Ok, in need of some advice here boys! Have this squad available:

    Alisson
    AWB - Robertson - Doherty
    Salah - Pogba - Richarlison - Hazard
    Jimenez - Auba - Rashford

    Bench: Button, Camarasa, Digne, Yoshida

    2FT and 1.2M ITB.

    Alternatives:
A: Aubameyang and Camarasa to Llorente and Sterling/Sanè.
B: Aubameyang and Digne to Agüero and Laporte.
C: Any other ideas to implement more DGWers?

Feel like I have to have something from City in case they explode.. But playing time is a big question mark here. Agüero really nailed on? Had a horrible game after the goal yesterday, amongst others.. However, bringing him in makes it easier to switch back to Auba..

    A) Trippier + Digne + Firmino - > Doherty + Tomkins + Aguero

Hello guys. Depending on how Chelsea look tonight would you even save a FT here? Other option would be to ditch Hazard for DGW player, most likely another City mid.

    Patricio
    Doherty, Shaw, Robertson
    Salah, Hazard, Pogba, Richarlison, Sterling
    Jimenez, Rashford

Player : Any Man City player especially Aguero, given his for. and the fact he is fully fit again what are the chances of him keeping Jesus on the bench again as city can’t afford to drop anymore points so must play their best XI every week.

Team : Relegation battling teams like Newcastle/Fulham/Southampton/Burnley, more to play for and mid table teams will start to not care much and players like Rondon/Mitrovic/Ings/Wood should be heavily involved in their fight to stay up so one of them could be a nice differential

Talking points : Is 5 in the middle still worth holding with the likes of Aubameyang/Lacazette/Firmino/Rashford/Aguero (Kane and Higuaín too once back firing) all showing good form Likes of Anderson/Richarlison/Hazard/Siggy/Sterling are just frustrating to own nowadays

        Good questions 🙂

I would question this statement though: "city can’t afford to drop anymore points so must play their best XI every week". Their "best 11" just lost to Newcastle, so this has me thinking that a manager like Pep will now consider trying alternatives to get back to winning ways, and also as a motivational tool to show certain players their places aren't guarenteed.

-Auba, have nice fixtures in gw 26-28 but seems lil bit overlook.
-Man City, dare to overlook City assets?
-With Kane still sideline, who is best options for premium to mid premium forward? Auba, Kun, Firmino, Higuain, Laca or even Vardy?

      Best Digne replacements?
Worth benching him for a couple of weeks if you can field other bench fodder like Awb, Bennet etc?
Periera is the ideal replacement but next 2 fixtures are really tough.

      Goalkeepers: Premium vs Cheapies

Should we just go with Alisson and use up a valuable Liverpool slot? DDG, Kepa and Ederson don't seem to be able to keep clean sheets at the moment.

I have Fabianski and was considering a switch to Ryan. Brighton have good home fixtures until the end of the season but they are truly woeful away, typified by conceding 4 against Fulham.

I have Alisson but I would like the option to be able to get Robbo or, more likely, TAA when he's fit and fresh.

A cheapie rotation on WC is what I'm looking at now, despite having had Alisson all season, so having quite a lot of TV tied up in him.

Like most of FFS I was all set to get TAA, he's still in my Sky team as I've loaded up with Liverpool players and don't want to burn a transfer. Looking at the fixtures I might stick with Fab & Button and wait until BB time to change it. Ryan was tempting but I had him before xmas and they frustratingly concede in easy games you are banking on points.
That means I could move Auba to Firminio and upgrade Fraser to Son. I've been plotting how to get Son since he went away to Asia.

Surely Tom Heaton is the best GK option in the game. I think he will be in top 3 for gk points from here till end of season.

He's certainly one to be considered, I don't have the stats to hand but they do seem to have performed better after they ditched Hart (shocking news). The only issue I would have with that is Nick Pope, he was fantastic last year and could conceivably be the long term keeper for the club. Heaton may be the captain but there is serious competition for his place.

Morning Joe, It would be good to have an update on the "whipping boys". Are West Ham entering whipping boy status after their recent results? What about Everton, especially if Geuye leaves for PSG? Has anyone notably stopped being a whipping boy, like Bournemouth for example? Any ones that are going under the radar would be particularly useful 🙂

Hey Joe, you spoke about Fernandinho last time out on the scoutcast & about how his injury accounted for Sterling & Sane’s Blanks over the Christmas period

Yesterday was another example of a game where Fernandinho plays yet Sterling & Sané still both blank (to add to Man Utd & chelsea games)

Sterling & Sane have now blanked together against Man Utd, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Newcastle - Fernandinho actually started 3 of those 5...

Do you think this theory still holds?

Considering City have lost 4 of their last 9 league games, and haven’t really looked themselves of late, keeping only 3 cleansheets in 14 GW’s, and their next 4 fixtures being Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea, blank... are we being lured into a DGW trap?

What's a good free hit squad for this week (I've been forced to play it after a very very dumb transfer haven taken Robertson out instead of Digne- what an unforgettable mistake, I couldn't really get him back either because his value went up while I had him so he became too expensive for me to buy back- but who knows it might be for the best)? I'm thinking of 3 from City (DGW- Sane, De Bruyne and either Aguero or Ederson), maybe one or two from Everton (DGW- Richarlison/ Sigurdsson and maybe Pickford or Keane), 2 or 3 from Chelsea (HUD at home- Emerson if he starts, probably Higuain and probably Hazard.), 1 or 2 from Brighton (WAT at home- Murray is almost certain, and maybe Duffy or Ryan), 1 or 2 from Liverpool (WHU away- Salah and maybe Alexander Arnold if he's fit), maybe Son or Rose at home vs Newcastle at home as well and potentially a united attacker. These are my initial thoughts but any other players you expect to do really well next gameweek? Who else is worth considering? I also like the look of Barnes/Wood at home to Southampton. I obviously won't have the space for them all but they're the ones in my thoughts as of right now, and as it is a free hit I'm trying to have a bit of a more different team so if I do well I can truly shoot up.
And a completely different question but is Callum Hudson Odoi becoming a good fifth midfielder? Could really start playing more now if he stays and he's been pretty impressive when he has played. Could even become a selection headache for our squads. And is Jonny a better option than Doherty now?

Players - Aubamayeng, Richarlison, Son, Lolrente

Team - Leicester - some good fixtures coming up who shall we get? Is Maddison becoming another Tadic with great stats but doesn't produce?

Talking Point should be DGW25 and BGW27 - what are each of yours plans around that? Is an Auba-Aguero hokey cokey worth it?

Since Haz's CHE got smashed by BOU, I feel like selling for Sterling, even if MCI did bad too.

Player - Hazard. Nothing against Bournemouth and a blank coming up. Worth holding beyond Huddersfield? Worth holding on to the TC chip for a potential Chelsea double rather than Man City in GW25 or Salah in a SGW?

Team - City... what's going on and worth captaining or getting in any additional players

Talking Point - planning for the blanks (and doubles)... general advice like if it's worth a hit or two over the coming weeks to field a full XI (vs. having only 9-10 starting players). And how to view players you want in to bring in over the next few weeks if they're going to have the inevitable blank in 31 and/or 33.

      Thanks!

I know we (Brighton) had a bad second half on Tuesday but just wondered what you though about our assets as we play 1 of the 'top 6' in our next 11 plus likely chance of a DGW against SOU (H) + CAR (H), Groß maybe? 1 goal and 2 assists in last 4 all away from home which is a positive sign as he normally delivered just at home last season, cheers
