Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Sterling Strikes In Sane’s Absence

Manchester City leave it oh so late to skewer the Saints, with one midfielder replacing another as the rising star in their ranks.

A month is a long time in Fantasy Premier League.

Leroy Sane came into Gameweek 11 at the start of November on the back of three straight double-digit hauls (and four from five).

He was the new Fantasy prince, his ownership trebling to more than one and a half million between Gameweeks 9 and 13 on the back of eight straight starts handed out by a manager notorious for shuffling his pack.

Team-mate Raheem Sterling, meanwhile, was getting by with dropping ownership and no guarantee of starts.

But over this month’s four Gameweeks, Sterling has scored 30 points to Sane’s 10.

The tide has turned quite markedly, with the virus that kept the German out of the last-gasp win over Southampton restricting his November output to a solitary assist, whereas Sterling has managed two of those and a pair of goals as well.

The England midfielder’s dramatic winner last night was a big blow for those who’d ditched him from Gameweek 10 onwards, although close to 140,000 had seen the light and brought him in ahead of yesterday’s match.

And while Pep Guardiola will no doubt be resting Sterling sooner or later – he’s started the last six matches in all competitions but is yet to manage five in a row in the league this season – the case for Sane is further weakened by disciplinary issues.

Should he recover in time to be available for Sunday’s visit from West Ham, the German remains one booking away from a ban that would keep him out of Gameweek 16’s Manchester derby.

For now, the momentum is most definitely with Sterling – more than 111,000 have made him Gameweek 15’s most popular pick, while Sane is currently the most sold player, with 107,000+ getting rid.

Playing the Guardiola guessing game

Sandwiched between City’s next two league matches is the long trip to Ukraine to play Shakhtar Donetsk in a Champions League dead rubber on Wednesday.

That will surely prompt Pep to sideline key personnel, with the indefatigable Kevin De Bruyne top of that particular list.

The Belgian, now tied with Sterling on 87 points for the season, has started every single league match to date.

He’s currently in fine form and the goal he was somewhat controversially awarded last night – his “on target” cross deflecting off Virgil Van Dijk – was his third in the last four Gameweeks. The midfielder also created nine chances against the Saints, which was a Gameweek high.

Sane’s yellow card conundrum might persuade Guardiola to save him for midweek, leaving Sterling to play on Sunday and then have the night off in Ukraine. Or, of course, it could be the other way round – second-guessing the City coach is a fool’s errand, after all.

David Silva was another to be rested last night, his 18.1% ownership having to make do with a 16-minute cameo, so the Spaniard should feature against the Hammers, while his namesake Bernardo could be in line for hs first start since Gameweek 10 if Guardiola rests one, or maybe even both, of Sane and Sterling.

Then there’s the issue of Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus.

The strikers started in tandem for the first time since Gameweek 5 last night but failed to spark, with the Brazilian fortunate to come away with an assist when he was fouled for De Bruyne’s shot/cross scoring free-kick.

The team as a whole seemed to miss the driving runs of Sane – they created 26 opportunities, but only two were deemed big chances – and the forward partnership suffered as a result, with Aguero failing to score for the first time in six league starts.

Guardiola might field the pair again on Sunday, but that Champions League tie makes it unlikely, although the coach has plenty of previous for starting with no recognised striker at all, so everything is up for grabs over the next week.

As ever this season, managers with City assets in their squads will have to suck it and see.

Cracks at the back for City

Gone are the days when Vincent Kompany needed to be in attendance for City to keep a clean sheet.

If anyone is missed at the back for Guardiola’s men, it is John Stones, who limped off with a hamstring injury 30 minutes into the team’s last shut-out in Gameweek 12.

City have now kept just two clean sheets in the last seven matches, with the Kompany/Nicolas Otamendi pairing hardly exuding confidence and the Belgian now one caution away from suspension – as is midfielder Fernandinho – following a yellow card last night.

Although Southampton were restricted to just six chances – only Chelsea allowed fewer in Gameweek 14 – the visitors threatened throughout.

Even before Oriol Romeu’s goal from a Sofiane Boufal assist, they missed two big chances from corners, including a Wesley Hoedt effort that struck the bar.

Aside from Chelsea and Arsenal, premium defences are struggling at present and City’s rearguard, much like rivals United and Spurs, are beginning to show weakness.

As for the Saints’ backline, they’ve managed just one clean sheet in nine matches, and a late knock for Cedric Soares (6.8%) was a further blow heading into Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth.

I've had both Sane & Sterling for the past 3 gwks and it feels great! Both kinda cheap and cover City nicely. Fire and forget.

Some have not ever owned him with predictable results...

Took an 8 point hit Aguero/Alli/Davies out for Hazard/Morata/Dunk - which didn't profit but is a long term thing. So 48 (-8) = another rough red arrow (must change grav again)...

Have not finally taken another hit to get Salah so I may now be able to sleep at night.....

The roughness of my gameweek is best described by a remarkable H2H encounter:
Started yesterday evening leading my H2H 12-2 from Tuesdays games, having only had 2 of my players play, whereas he had had 3, so I was already feeling fairly confident. How misplaced that confidence turned out to be…

It started fairly promisingly, with my Calvert-Lewin winning a penalty. Unfortunately, he proceeded to smash it straight at that renowned penalty saver, Joe Hart (where was this in Euro 2012 v Italy, Joe?!), who of course my opponent had. So that was an 8 point swing to him. I cheered as my radio bought news of Otamendi breaking the deadlock at the Etihad. Unfortunately of course, this was short lived, and worse still, my opponent had De Bruyne, so that was a 9 point swing in his favour. No matter, my captain Hazard wasn’t playing, so VC Kane would save me. What’s that Conte? You bought him on for 9 minutes? Ok, that’s another 5 points frittered away.

The final injustice was thinking that I’d got away with all this, only for news of a goal at the Etihad….The goal, Sterling, the assist, De Bruyne. You don’t need me to tell you my opponent owned both. The final, 8 point swing in his favour, and defeat confirmed.

Fabianski's 5 points off the bench for Elliott was a real treat.

Not me, but someone in my league had tripled captained Salah - what a roller coaster of an evening they must have had!

Roughest moment of the night was having Otamendi's "goal" announced on BBC sport, then taken away, followed by him losing the clean sheet (and possible bonus) that he had as a consolation. Especially as I'd brought him in this week.

The otamendi “goal” was a new and cruel way to torture managers. Brought him in for a hit last week for Duffy, and currently about 10 points down on the deal.

Rough: Azpi and Sane no shows. The defenders I played (Mee, Azpi and Daniels) scored 3 points between them. Morata (C) did nothing, easily outscored by Kane (vc)

Smooth: Duffy and Moreno off the bench for a combined 13 points! Also Sterling and Salah are heroes. 52 points, small green arrow to 45k to make it 9 in a row and extended my ML lead by 20 points

      Just smooth this week:

      Fabianski in for Elliot
getting Dunk instead of Tarkowski (almost went Tarko because of price rise, I`m getting Mee now)
      Sterling
Not getting Hazard (Lukaku out) for a hit - 8 points swing there.

Is it worth going without City altogether and going back to the old school method of only picking nailed on, consistant players?

Why haven't people been captaining Salah?

Is it even worth a hit to replace Elliot if he was your only playing keeper? Surely he was looking at a one pointer anyway.

Comfortably my worst week in FPL.

Rough: Azpi, Haz(c) & Bavis. Sterling to Pogba transfer failed miserably, lessons learned in trying to second guess Pep.

Got to get this out of my system!

Rough was my -12 transfers of:
Holgate (6pts) to Christensen (6pts) - had just brought Dann in!
      Sterling (9pts) to Hazard (1pt)
      Zaha (3pts) to RLC (3pts)
      Lukaku (5pts) to Morata (1pt)
Mainly because I was worried I wouldn't have a full XI, whereas in fact Moreno's 7pts ended up on the bench.
I'm hoping the fact the squad looks in better shape now is some consolation for the 31 points I could have profited from...

Smooth was fortunately skippering Salah over Hazard, Morata and Kane.

Very rough. For the 3rd time in 4 GWs.

      - Transfers of Lukaku, Sterling, and DDG to Morata, Hazard (C) and Elliot (-4) backfired spectacularly, resulting in a net loss of 16 points.

      - A total of 40.6 million worth of my players who were expected to play didn't start this week (Hazard, Azpi, Sane, Elliot, Salah), not including Speroni (dropped last week) or Niasse (banned for diving immediately after bringing him in on WC).

      - Elliot's no-show has left me without a playing GK, with only 1FT this week and 0 itb, meaning I'll likely have to take a hit to even get a full 11 out this weekend.

      - Another red arrow with 42 (-4) all out in an already poor season, down to 561k overall

Really struggling to take the positives as I stumble from bad to worse.

Rough: took a -4 to do Jones, Richarlison and Lukaku > Azpi, Hazard and Niasse (the last of whom was for the bench).

Rougher: Chose Azpi because mini league leader has Alonso - that worked out well.

Roughest: not only did Hazard’s (c) 9-minute cameo ruin my Salah (vc), but I would have captained Salah had I not made the transfers. I think my ‘mini wildcard’ cost me 20 points since Lukaku got an assist.

Smooth: somehow still alive in Last Man Standing (every cloud...)!

      Rough:
-Did Vardy/Richarlison to Haz/Wilson or a hit - and captained Haz with Kane VC.
      -Sane/Salah/Haz benched, Jones injured.
      -40 (-4).

      -Salah averted a complete disaster

      2FT.

Smooth: teams announced and I don't have Hazard or Salah or Azpi so I was very pleased,

Rough: then out comes the City lineup, my transfer was Sterling to Sane (c) and I see no Sane and Sterling Starts, smile quickly wiped from my face as I'm facing a 1pt cameo

Smooth: then see Sane isn't on the bench so count myself very lucky to get Kane (c) instead

Rough: Games kick off, rival gets Brady goal and assist, nothing happening for me bar possibly clean sheets

Smooth: Alonso CS banked, Fabianski 5 points banked, Kolasinac gets late assist and CS. At this point FF Fix predicts me to go to 1.6k

Rough: up steps Salah, 2 goals for everybody except me. Then Walker conceded a goal and Sterling who I sold gets a winner. Back to 7k

Smooth: Moreno CS and bap puts me on 840 to stay at 60 ppw average despite not having owned Salah yet. Slight green arrow from 8k to 7.6k. Scored 53 same as my rival to maintain 71 point lead.

On one hand Salah killed me and my transfer went horribly wrong

But on the other, to get a green arrow and not lose ground to rival on a week where my captain and transfer was terrible was a very luck escape. Big money defence saving me again

    69. Harmonica1967

Smooth: Kane, Christensen transfer in, Salah (but everyone has him and ML rivals had him captained), Pogba.
Rough: Salah coming on both kept me from getting 5 points off my bench, and the rivals who captained him also jumped 13 more points up the board. Captain Morata going absent. Burnley and Man City conceding late wiped out all but one of my cleansheets. Rivals having KdB and Sterling.

After 7 consecutive green arrows had pushed me to the edge of the top 50k, I'm now back outside of the top 100k after two pretty bad weeks in a row. Worse, my mini-league lead had been slashed from 50 points to 17, as the same 2-3 rivals have had 3 high-scoring weeks in a row.

      Rough:
Two poor scores followed by a desperate 20 point hit had seen my overall rank plummet from 300k to 1.031m in 3 game-weeks.
And then in GW14 I was hit hard by rotation - one player suspended, four players benched including my captain, and vice-captain Sane didn't even make the match-day squad.
What an idiot! Why oh why had I not played it safe and made Kane vice-captain? How stupid can you get?

      Smooth:
      But what a turn-round!
Captain fantastic Mo Salah trotted on for a late two-goal cameo.
Sterling scored a winning goal in the last minute of Pep time.
And Kolasinac, Mustafi, Doucoure, Kane and Pogba also chipped in with useful contributions.
So I finished with 75 points, and rose over 500k places to 518k.
Top game-week score in the Mods and Cons league - but strangely this was the only one of my mini-leagues in which I failed to get a green arrow!

Rough - decision to transfer out Lacazette, Romeu and Lukaku > Morata, Salah and C Wilson for a -4 cost me on paper about 5 points on paper.

Smooth - Last minute change of the armband to Kane over Morata paid off, and with Lacazette no injured and the fact that even had I kept Romeu, he would have been on my bench anyway, I think I have come off slightly better overall. Also green arrows in vast majority of my MLs so I am a happy camper 🙂

      Where do I start Jonty?!

GW13 - last minutes goals, assists galore but with an Otamendi OG
GW14 - Salah off the bench to get a haul (probably like most people on here), then what looked like a rough, Elliot dropped, saw Fabianski come in for a difficult away game to CHE where I had Hazard and Morata playing.. but got 5 unexpected points and Newcastle conceded 2 anyway in a game I thought would be 0-0... but then the rough came with Hazard coming on for a pointless 9 minutes which stopped Vardy coming off my bench with 5 points.

So so rough! 34 points, Hazard (c), don't own Salah, no GK. Had no pressing issues so I did 2 FTs to change non-playing guys. Had Krul, Jones and Carrick. Changed the latter two to Tarkowski and RLC. Then Elliot got benched.

Kolasinac, Kane, Jesus the only points I got. Back to 75k OR from 30k. From the start of the season the pattern is always one red arrow, two green arrows, one red arrow, two green arrows, etc. Hopefully this weekend it's a green arrow!

Rough - Switched Sterling to Sane last gw. lost 20 points over two games. Also brought Wilson in for 2,2 for Aguero.

No keeper as both Eliott and Speroni dropped.

Moreno second sub would've come on for Salah which woul've been a bigger rank boost than his two goals which meant a rank drop once Sterling scored.

      Smooth - Kane (C)

      1) Is it almost embarrassing that most of us haven't been captaining Salah?

      2) What would you put into Mark's jar of regrets?

      3) What's the right number of Chelsea players to own?

      4) Is going to all the trouble of getting an active bench even worth it, when all the heavy hitters are likely to come on for a 1 point substitute appearance?

      5) Which big names are likely to be rested this weekend? Is anyone rotation-proof ... Particularly from the teams who haven't been playing in the champions league?

      6) Who is the best goalkeeper for Elliott and Krul/Speroni owners?

On Salah I would say it is purely people don't think he can keep it up and don't want to captain him the week he blanks,

I've captained him once, at home to Huddersfield and he missed a penalty.

That put me off captaining the following week, I made him vice and he hauled vs West Ham.

I was all set to captain him this GW but with the high likelihood of him being benched I went Kane, Salah hauls again.

This week, who knows. I should, but then there is Hazard.

What's more embarrassing is half of managers don't own him 😀

Now the day of reckoning has come for the 4.0 goalkeeper, which direction are we looking to go in? Especially those that own both Speroni and Elliot.

Do we continue to go cheap and look at short term 4.3 options like Grant and Hennessey?

Maybe a 8.3 double up of Speroni and Hennessey?

Upgrade one or both to 4.5/4.6 keepers like Lossl, Ryan, Pope, Begovic, Gomes, etc

Or do we write off a keeper spot and upgrade one of them to Courtois or David De Gea?

This is a good question. With rotation already started & congestion like we've never seen before - is it not time to park a premium keeper for next 8/9 GWs? Courtois or DDG are probably going to match any defender pts over this period.

      1. Is double Cheslea defence a good option if Morata & Hazard are going to rotated?
Can see more value in Azpi/Alonso + Christensen + Morata/Haz.

      2. Should we start considering Pogba & Ramsey?
Two of the most nailed and cheap routes into United & Arsenal attack who have some good fixtures and form.

(From a salty Sane owner) When should the cut-off point be for cards- i.e. if a card is issued after the final whistle should they still be added to fpl? If the melee involving Sane had happened in the tunnel rather than on the pitch and he was booked then would it still have been added?

Is it time to sell Sane?

If he was playing any wider he would be in the stands. His stats are way down. Just 2 shots in the last 4 gws. Not to mention the illness and being on 4 YCs may mean he isn't risked before the Manchester derby.

Know what you're saying but he's played wide all season, he did hit the bar against Huddersfield.

City looked nowhere near as good last night without him, surely he can wind his neck in for one game.

If he starts vs that West Ham defence it could be a huge haul.

      Some thoughts on defence:

Is Zeegelaar worth considering over Kiko ? Mariappa cheap but is he nailed ? Watford fixtures look decent.

Is Leicester's defence worth considering given the next 4 fixtures ?

Speroni & Hennessy double up worth considering given the fixtures and savings that could be made ?

With Chelsea's incredible, mouth-watering run of fixtures, a triple-up is on everybody's minds. Question is, which Chelsea players are worth investing in long-term, considering price, value, explosiveness, nailedness, VORP and dare I say it, captaincy options?

In continuation of the other Elliot/Speroni related inquiries, how many of the Scouts would take a hit this weekend to be sure of fielding a goalkeeper?

Is it right, as we often do, to consider a hit in such a position as effectively a "-2", since it's likely the Elliot/Speroni combo will score 0 this weekend?

Or would it be better to hold fire on a replacement this week, risk playing with 10, and re-evaluate after the weekend's fixtures, avoiding a hit in the process?

Midfielders are overperforming and forwards are underperforming. Even Kane, who is doing OK, but not justifying his price tag.

Time to scale back completely, perhaps to a 4-5-1 with Morata? I see more value from Hazard, or even Sanchez, and other big-hitting midfielders. I'll keep Kane for this week, because Watford, but we have a potential permacaptain in Salah, so what's the point in all these expensive forwards?

      1) With Arsenal seemingly on the up, how long can people ignore Ramsey for? Surely the best mid-priced asset at present.

      2) Is a Chelsea and liverpool defensive double-up now an option? Both have cheap (Gomez, Moreno, Christiensen, Courtois) options and look strong, particularly home

      3) With the City Merry-go-round. Should be just bite the bullet and either have both Sane and Silva OR just KBD even?

Went sensible, cut down on hits, captained obvious options, looked at the next six on the ticker and picked players with good fixtures.

It sounds really obvious but I only started doing that in January after three months of hits and wild punts (Giroud!).

Also make sure you keep your chips for DGWKs. That period saw the biggest ranking climb - in part through others wasting their chips earlier.

Which low budget defender is the best option beside burnley until christmas? Liverpool defense worth a show with their upcoming fixtures?

Best third striker choice? And how long would you stick to Abraham if he doesnt deliver?

    Advice please guys...

Ive got no keeper this weekend..
    Should I...

    a) Play with 10 (as will require a -4)

    b) Speroni/Elliot & Abraham OUT - New Keeper & Niasse IN @-4

    1. MTPockets
        6 years, 5 months ago

Difficult. Elliot may start and Niasse may not.
I've lost Elliot but for free. Really not sure about -4.

For the first time this season, I realy don't know what to do with Chupo-Moting. Keeping him coz of his "out of position" situation, but he doesn't meet the expectations. One goal in last 10 games, some assist time by time, for me, very bad results. And Stoke is such a crap.Wanna change him for next GW for some guy in 5.5 - 7.5 price range. Some suggestions?

      Foster
      Otamendi / Moreno / Naughton
      Hazard / Salah / Sterling / Ritchie
      Kane / Morata / Wilson
      Elliott / Mustafi / Carroll / Mbemba

1ft, Ritche to Richarlison sound good? Tottenham isn't the best time to bring him in, but they've looked weak at the back and Richarlison was threatening against ManU.

      Fabianski, Elliot
      Mee, Kolasinac, Jones, Maguire, Gomez
      Richarlison, Salah, Ramsey, Caroll, Delph
      Kane, Morata, Lukakku

got me 60points midweek, looking to make some changes at the weekend.

Tempted with Lukakku + Delph > a cheap striker maybe Abraham/Niasse + De Bruyne?

      Any thoughts appreciated, thanks

Time for scoutcast guys to do away with captain picks? .... just an exercise in misinformation aimed at their rivals most weeks. Not really appropriate for a show advertised to guide the punters.

I was at last night's game and he could easily have had a brace.

One outstanding Fabianski save and a standard miss after getting cleanish through.

No it's not . It's a discussion between 5 or 6 regular fpl players on their thoughts on fpl and the coming gws, a bit of internet entertainment . It's not there as a guide for anything. Make your own decisions. You have access to members stats. No achievement if you just going to follow what others tell you to do surely?

My point is that the scout cast is not a guide. People shouldn't take it as one. Why lose the captain choices. It's part of their discussion not for us to follow them

          Hey there. Nice grav 🙂

Team looks great. If you have any FTs, look at upgrading Mbemba. Always good to have a playing bench.

I'd switch Naughton out for RLC, as Swansea are in poor form (despite last game) and RLC is playing very far up the pitch.

Otherwise GTG (captaincy order would be Salah, Haz then Kane but it's personal preference as they're all good picks this weekend)
