The Community Round-Up

Wildcard fever has taken grip of the community over the past week. While some are currently brandishing the chip in anticipation of a boost in value and points, others are clinging to it and are all too happy to rain on their parade.

Our community discussions also took in transfer deadline day antics, the search for value in midfield and whether Harry Kane will ever find the net.

The Spurs striker’s underlying figures came under scrutiny in our Members’ tables summary, and we finish off our round-up with a look at those who have no need to Wildcard from their vantage point at the top of our community leagues.

The Community Articles

Today saw the launch of our latest community writer of the month vote, where we ask you to name your favourite scribe during August. The winner of your vote will receive a £20 Amazon voucher.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topic

Mark’s decision to activate his Wildcard sparked a flurry of discussions over the optimum time to use this valuable chip and which players to target.

The timing of his move, during the first international break, received a mixed response from the community and even shock from one of our fold.

Some who had endured a tough Gameweek – as detailed in our latest rough with the smooth Hot Topic – were among those who felt the time was right to wipe the slate clean with their team.

But Mlexer believes Wildcarding this early can be fraught with problems, with price rises stalling and too many issues still left unresvolved around team selection, rotation and form.

Your Mum’s Athletic has also noticed a slow down in the FPL transfer market and is pessimistic that the sort of dramatic valuation changes seen in 2016/17 will be replicated over the new season.

The transfer window is a key issue to take into account over the coming weeks. Dreams dropped by ahead of yesterday’s deadline to canvass the community’s views on the ideal moves they would like to see take place. As transfer deals unfolded Andre94PT gave us a detailed scouting report on Swansea’s new loan signing Renato Sanches.

But during the morning after the night before the community began to realise that the deals which failed to materialise could prove to be the most significant, with Pirlo’s Pen particularly jubilant about Marcos Alonso’s starting prospects following Chelsea’s failure to capture another left wing-back.

Another issue for Wildcarders to ponder is whether Harry Kane can live up to his 12.5 price tag, considering he has yet to score this season, despite breaking goal attempt records. Dino believes poor quality shooting is the reason behind his failure to find the net, while Poodle thinks the Spurs forward is lacking confidence.

Chris White added to the debate to highlight how the England striker is at the centre of a ‘casuals versus veterans’ battle due to his poor returns from such stunning underlying statistics.

Champions League rotation and Swansea City’s line-up are among other outstanding issues highlighted where more evidence may be required before Wildcarding, according to our discussion.

The community is far more certain about the ability of Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino to offer value following his reclassification from midfielder to forward over the summer. A19 asked for your views on how he can be best used – as part of a premium packed forward line, or as a replacement for a heavy hitter such as Kane?

Red Lightning is among those pondering whether an expensive three-man frontline can offer genuine value for money.

The fate of Kevin De Bruyne appears to be another certainty after adopting a deep midfield role and failing to produce points for his hefty fee. FC5750HC delivered the news that even the Belgian himself admits that he is now a defensive midfielder – a change of role that has already prompted 156,000+ FPL managers to part company with him this week and force his price to dip to 9.9.

There were further defensive problems and solutions provided in our discussion on the favoured backlines, while Jac the Cat asked for views on the best budget midfield options.

Value was also on the mind of Marcus, who has been highlighting some strong Fantasy options to suffer a price loss.

To view all our discussions please visit our Hot Topics page.

The Members’ Tables

Ambergambler has taken a look at the most successful set-piece takers, with some additional useful statistics thrown in recgarding crossing.

Elsewhere, G-whizz has been examining the underlying statistics of strikers, with a certain Spurs forward producing some particularly eye-catching underlying numbers.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

In the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league Greenwindmill has taken top spot off Evs. Meanwhile, in the Moderators and Contributors FPL Draft league, I remain top after victory over Az, but face a stern test in Gameweek 4 when I take on our resident draft expert, second placed Andy.

QPRUTD is top of his own FFS Frequent Summers Posters league with a score of 197 after the first three Gameweeks. He is hotly pursued by Jallegre in second on 192.

Meanwhile, the Elite64 “who’s who of Fantasy Football” league has a new leader, with Don Tierney snatching top spot.

Dave Hughes has taken the lead in both Red Lightning’s Top 10k Any Season mini-league and PDM’s Top 1,000 Any Season contest. With a rank of 2,981, he looks on course to notch his third top 300 finish across his 12-season FPL career

In TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Shaps hit the top score in Gameweek 3 with 86. There are over 3,700 teams left after 235 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 32.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

    Okay, final post.
Pretty happy with this one only issue being is I bought Jones for 5.0 and now he is 5.1 so I want to be fairly certain before I press make transfers...

    Foster | Elliot
    *Alonso* | Cedric | *Naughton* | *Wimmer* | *Mbemba*
    *Eriksen* | *Mane* | *Mkhitaryan* | *Pogba* | Carroll/RLC/Chalobah
    Lukaku | *Firmino* | *Mounie*

    *Wildcard* (3-4-3) 0.0 ITB, Thoughts!?

Looking at him for his next 3... West Ham, Leicester + Burnley should be able to get some pretty good points from those fixtures.

Yeah, last week for him in my team unless he scores points. Well, maybe 2 weeks since Swansea have Spurs in GW5 and there's aren't many more forwards in that price range.

Yeah, but then you also need to look at something like Alonso + Mounie vs Bavies + Chicharito.

Stick to AFL Fantasy mate, team looks awful!

Haha only joking, looks good but Mounie will be hard to replace given his price point and hard to see Huddersfield keep this pace up.

Been a lurker for a while. First time poster. Hopefully first of many.

    Thoughts on my team?

    Foster
    Jones Stephens Kola
    KDB Willian Ramsey Ritchie
    Firmino Lukaku Kane

Bench - Elliot Carroll Mee Long

Obviously KDB -> to Mane or Salah; haven't decided yet

Considering wildcard as i have way too many maybe players with Kola, Stephens, Willian, Ramsey, KDB and Ritchie. Thoughts?

    1. fedolefan
      • 9 Years
      6 years, 8 months ago

Since City and Pool play each other, you could spread the risk this week and retain KDB as opposed to doubling up on Pool. Personal choice though. I don't think you need to WC. Just save this week and use 2-3 transfers next week to clean out your maybe players.

I feel Liverpool are fixture proof and KDB has been playing way too deep for my liking. Could go KDB to Eriksen or Alli. Too many options to choose from. Probably not going to wildcard. Thanks mate.

Oh yeah, KDB to Eriksen or Alli is good too. I forgot about them. For some reason I just thought KDB to Mane/Salah were the only choices.

If MLS manager was desired, would've liked to see a risk taken with Pareja, who has a reputation in MLS for promoting youth and doing well with such a policy, which is exactly what the usa needs

Otherwise, someone like Marcelo Bielsa, who was unemployed at the time, could've been sought out

My WC team atm, also have 2.2 ITB, how can I improve this team?

    Foster (Elliot)

Alonso - Jones - Cedric - Naughton (Simpson)

Alli - Salah - Pogba - Brady (Carroll)

    Kane - Firmino (Abraham)

I could upgrade Abraham to Morata, but to do that I would have to downgrade Alonso to Davies, Simpson to Mbemba and Brady to Atsu.

I don't see Conte and Costa patching up. Same with VVD.

Coutinho - and for that matter Sanchez are I think more professional and will be back. For Coutinho the problem is how well Liverpool have been playing without him, but he'll no doubt work his way back, leaving the Ox as a perennial substitute!

I wasn't really thinking from a fantasy perspective. But yes it would not help Morata and in turn Costa wouldn't be an option either.

I was more pondering how difficult it is to go back on all that is said when both sides have ego's as big as they do even when it is in the best interest of everyone involved

He won't be facing Ebbsfleet defenders in the PL, you realise? Having said that, September's rolled around so the goals are due.

My WC squad is very similar to yours, with option A. So I've dropped Kane myself.

2FTs, 1.9 in bank, what can be done? Hegazi to someone?

    Fabianski
    Cedric, Yoshida, Fernandez
    Atsu, Eriksen, Pogba, Mane
    Kane, Luka, Mounie

    Bench: Hegazi, Mariappa, Romeu

Use 1FT on one of Atsu or Mounie. You may replace Hegazi, but what if he remains and Yoshida is dropped. Don't use your transfer on them for another couple of weeks.

Yeah, I just don't want to commit to getting rid of Lukaku until Kane delivers. Who knows, I may have to eat humble pie and drop Kane despite only buying him last GW. Lukaku is a decent captain shout against Everton and Palace, both of whom are fairly wretched away from home.

Captain lacazette is a decent option gw4... I regret bringing in morata .. Should have waited for the laca drop and earned the same amount more quickly and have a decent (C) option for gw4.. Only upside on morata is that he is cheaper.. But if you gonwith morata I would still captain him over kane

Costa has just been included in Chesea's 25 player premier league squad.

Also do not forget that much of the disharmony with Costa will have been media scandalisation. See no reason why he will not be back

Loan him out in January to a CL team, start him in PL games around CL midweek fixtures. Right, that's enough for me to lose Morata.

Why do Ayew needs upgrading if I am going with a 3-5-2?

The Eriksen - Alli combination is the replacement for Kane. The Caption problem is indeed a concern tho.

I have a similar mid/attack, but have Brady, Lukaku instead of Eriksen, Mkhi... to be honest Eriksen & Mkhi may score more points, but I'll be damned if I'm going without Lukaku 🙂

          Forster
          Trippier, Jones, Maguire, Hegazi, Mbemba
          Alli, Salah, Pogba, Brady, Carroll

But both Trippier and Hegazi can be rotated?

With your Power-5 midfield you can only have 2 up top and can't afford Alonso, so imo given your 3-5-2 midfield, the rest is about as good as you can afford. Good luck!

Yep, to be honest I'm considering going Naughton-Mee with Jones-Cedric-Hegazi & avoiding Spurs defence altogether until see how they plan to rotate. Had Hegazi since GW1 so need to keep, I think he'll keep getting games unless he makes any more mistakes.

Naughton & Mee have some seriously nice home fixtures, with a Southampton double up & a Utd/West Brom def that should be plenty of CS's for not too much £ 🙂

Re-jigged WC draft with Kane back in for Morata, and Alonso sacrificed at the back. Power front 6, bit concerned re the defence:

    Foster (Elliot)
    Cedric, Naughton, Fernandez (Zanka, Mbemba)
    Mane, Pogba, Eriksen, (Carroll, Chalobah)
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

    Thoughts? 🙂

You only really have 3 attacking teams there... in a week where Utd/Liverpool/Spurs don't score heavily it may be difficult to score points... Morata or Haz would help spread the risk a bit?

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

True, but I'm not a spreader/coverage type of player. Besides, I'm in a weekly money-league where coming second wins me nothing but first is $40. 😉

But I am ambivalent about bringing in Kane and Eriksen has forced me to go from triple-Chelsea to no Chelsea....

Yep, the wc Morata/Alonso easily becomes Kane/4.5-5.0, might chance me arm seeing Kane has @eve and prices could still move. You're playing safe?

I don't consider it safe really; all options are gambles. If Kane continues to blank, if Morata is nailed, if Alonso is Alonso I'll be a sea of regrets.

    *Alonso* | Cedric | *Naughton* | *Wimmer* | *Mbemba*
    *Eriksen* | *Mane* | *Mkhitaryan* | *Pogba* | Carroll/RLC/Chalobah
    Lukaku | *Firmino* | *Mounie*

    *Wildcard* (3-4-3) 0.0 ITB, Thoughts!?

Mounie a place holder... good fixtures in his next 3 with West Ham, Leicester and Burnley. Allows me to get players such as Alonso in the defence, do I press make transfers..!? Means I lose out on the profit I made from Jones.

Cheap mids and forwards. Are there any decent options?

Cheers. I have Carroll already, might just stick with Fraser and look to downgrade Gabiadini instead.

For a 4th mid Brady looks like he could be gold, has a lot going for him... Atsu looks like he could justify a place in a team with the odd goals & assists.... Mooy already got a few price rises so not as cheap any more ... for bench mids there are TC/RLC/Chalobah.

Up front I think it's better to go with Firmino +2 big hitters

Whats with all this Brady love? Is his stats crazy or something?

He is a dead ball specialist who can also score & assist a lot from play, with v good home fixtures from now till a long time out, should hopefully get a few goals & assists in that time. He also has taken penalties for Ireland, so could be in line if Burnley get one.

More keen on having Kane to add to Lukaku so have to have a cheap striker. Gabbs at the moment but probably have to downgrade.

Abraham after his 8-point haul is popular down those parts.

Bony will be a sure rival, too risky I think. Will get a swansea striker when the starting spots become more clear though I think

Only a sub in his last game. Doesn't seem nailed.

Not mention Cork for bench mids? He have the highest point compare to the trio.

Wondering if I should WC or not.
Have 0 FT left as I already went KDB out for Alli.
I now have 0.9 cash left over, and wondering whether I should leave my team as it is, take a hit or hit the WC button. I am thinking no WC but unsure between my other 2 options. Team is:
    Foster
    Davies, Jones, Stephens, Hegazi
    Alli, Salah, Pogba
    Kane, Lukaku, Gabbiadini

    Elliot: Carroll, RLC, Long

Left it a bit late to wc, the few risers have been missed so best make do. Carroll covers Stephens so you should be okay for XI

I cannot see much in Renato Sanches stats to suggest he is fantasy gold waiting to happen. Is there anyone out there who knows him better than a page on Transfermarkt who could provide more info?

I think he'll add a heck of a lot to the team. I'm not considering Sanches himself, but the transfer's given me confidence to triple-up on Swansea budget options - Carroll, Fernandes and Naughton.

Chicharito, 4.0 defender (not Mbemba) + Krul (Elliot on field)

    or...

Mounie, Wimmer + Foster (Elliot on bench)

Is there any 4.0 defender that is not Mbemba that is viable to pick in a 3-4-3?
