Sign up now for next Fantasy Football Scout Charity Cup

February 24th 2018. The big winners were Liverpool and Brighton, who each recorded 4-1 victories in their respective triumphs over West Ham and Championship-bound Swansea.

However, in north London, under the banner of Sparta Rotterdam, a team of FFScout luminaries were also celebrating, as they lifted the inaugural Fantasy Football Scout Charity Cup. A real-life football tournament which brought to together over 30 grassroots players from around the country.

The Charity Cup is returning on the afternoon of Saturday 17 November 2018 (during the international break) and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The format will depend on numbers, but with a full 3G 11-a-side pitch (which can also be divided) available to us all afternoon between 2pm and 7pm, we have the capacity and flexibility to structure the day however we wish.

We are extremely fortunate to have secured The Thomas Parmiter Sports Centre in north Watford (WD25 0UU), which is a fabulous facility and is perfectly located just minutes away from Junction 6 of the M1 and Junction 21A of the M25.

For those travelling up from London by train, Garston Station is just 1.5 miles away. We will have the entire venue to ourselves with ample parking and with a number of pubs barely a mile away.

Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part, whatever the level and whether you are fit enough to play all day or just make a cameo appearance. We’ll be organising players into squads so you don’t need to round up a team yourself, although feel free to bring invite a guest player or two to boost the numbers.

All you need to do is email peter.kouwenberg76@gmail.com as soon as possible to confirm your interest and provide your contact details, at which point you’ll be added to the relevant WhatsApp group unless you would prefer to be kept informed by email or text instead.

February’s tournament proved a huge success and raised over £1,000 for Melanoma Research Foundation. This year we hope to raise more even money, involve even more as we donate to men’s mental health charity CALM.

The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is dedicated to preventing male suicide, the single biggest killer of men under the age of 45 in the UK. On average, 12 men take their own life every day – more than three times the number of women.

Two of my uncles committed suicide so I personally think it’s a great cause. CALM works to prevent male suicide by providing services for men who are down or in crisis, and by campaigning for culture change so men feel able to seek help.

To donate please visit our JustGiving page:

All money raised will go directly to the charity, so please give generously.

CALM’s helpline – 0800 58 58 58 – and webchat are open daily 5pm-midnight. It’s free, anonymous and confidential.

For more information about CALM and the impact your donation will have, please read here.

CALM is a charity registered in England and Wales (1110621) and in Scotland (SC044347)

Should we be looking at Kane? We have a lot changing this week, and one player on the rise is a certain Harry Kane, who is suddenly coming back onto people's radars after his absence post World Cup. Is it time to jump back on the Kane train?

There's lots of good reasons to get him in. Short term, his fixtures are fantastic, and those with a wildcard still available could make excellent use of this. We have a lack of captain options currently, with Liverpool and Chelsea playing each other this week and Liverpool City next week, so having a Harry Kane against Huddersfield and Cardiff could be a lovely captain option.
It's undeniable that Harry Kane has been absolute class in past seasons, consistently scoring 20+ goals. Can we really turn our noses up at his short term form in the face of his excellent pedigree? If he was to explode in the next two, picking up 2 hat-tricks, could you really say it was a big surprise? Unlikely.
There's also the factor that he's a lovely differential. If you stick with the herd, you'll finish with the herd and sometimes you need to stick your neck out to make a real impact, even if that means stepping out of the safety blanket that is the FPL template. Live a little! This man has scored 20+ goals in the last 4 seasons, yet will have a tiny TSB % in the top 10k, 100k, 500k – which is pretty unusual!

Obviously, it comes with risks. Kane's form has hardly been sparkling. Can we truly say now is the time to up roots and jump on Kane? It is always great to be ahead of the curve instead of chasing last week's points, but when you try it and it fails, you're left with some serious egg on your face. It's the old issue of Form Vs fixtures - can Kane strike a blow for fixtures here?
Bringing Kane in would also require a serious reshuffle. The two crowds that I'd assume would be contemplating Kane would be those with Salah and those with Auba. Salah --> Rich and 7m --> Kane could be one move, but would require a minus 4 probably. It's more likely that those with Auba could do it for free, but for most you'd expect a hit to be involved. All those bringing in Kane will have to be sacrificing a premium player, probably someone off form or with bad games, or perhaps someone like Aguero (!), but everyone will probably be taking hits.
There's of course a big risk involved just from his price tag. Recently we've seen people scuttling away from Salah and his 13m tag, myself included, because his returns haven't been adequate. As the most expensive striker at 12.4m, with worse returns, are we being too short sighted perhaps?

I can't see myself bringing him in, as my priorities lie elsewhere with other Pedro shaped holes to fix. I doubt many will make the jump to bring him in, with many more staying away and keeping a wary eye on him, but if he explodes, which I think is entirely possible, there will be a big rush to jump on.
I think whether you should bring him in or not will depend on your unique situation and how much you are willing to risk, but rest assured the herd here will tell you not to do it, perhaps out of their own fear. If it is right for you though, do it, especially if you have the safety of a WC to fall back on – something like Andy’s Kane plan (Scoutcast 269 @ 30:37)

Will you be bringing in Kane, or perhaps different Spurs asset? What reasons are standing out for you?

I think it's quite team dependent.

If you have a good way to get him in/WC then it might work but for a lot of people, it requires a hit and I don't think he's worth it especially since you'll want to get Salah back for GW9.

Not interested in Kane, don't see the advantage over Salah and will want the latter from GW9 onwards. I understand you can have both but it strangles the rest of the team somewhat.

I went Laporte over Tripper to fund Richarlison, so no Spurs assets for me.

It was always going to happen at some point, it’s just a bit of a pain it has arrived in a space where he has nice fixtures and everyone doesn’t.

If he had form then it would prompt more changing, but one game against a defensively iffy side isn’t for me, and outside of this mini fixture run, I’m not particularly concerned.

Not just yet. I would need to take hits. I have 1 FT with no urgent iasues so going to let it roll over and see if i can get Kane next week, depending on performance against
Huddersfield. Brighton performance wasn't quite good enough for 12.4mil

Makes sense. Lack of captaincy options for many next week, so could be a good option. Can't see many having FTs to burn with the rotation / injuries we have currently, so hits will be required by most I'm sure

His form is just so meh.

FMLFPL guys pointed out that most of his good stats that accrued in the last game came after Moura was hooked. His goal was a pen. He seems to be playing as a #10 when he starts with Moura at the moment.

I might be wrong he may well bang in a hattrick but I think more likely is 1-2 goals for which you can get plenty that will do the same for 7m and under. Not for me Geoff.

Leading my cash ML and thinking Salah to Maddison (have Richa) and Zaha to Kane for -4. If I can get 20 points from Kane over next 3 I'll be chuffed with the hit.

If Mané can keep matching Salah it's an easy trade to get Mane from gw9 again. If Salah outperforms Mané I'll be sweating like a whore in church...

don't really want to remove Arnie and Aguero is probably the best captain pick this week, so not yet. I'm definitely not ruling out Aguero -> Kane next week, especially if Aguero's minutes are reduced again.

It’s basically for the CAR fixture I presume? As he’s the stand out captaincy option in gw8. Not worth it imo. We have seen too many historical (K)ane fails at home against lesser opponents in the past to make me gamble on him blanking in a fixture like that again. Can’t let FOMO for one week dictate my transfers. Wouldn’t be surprised if old Glenn outscores Kane in gw8 tbh.

Definately going for Kane, doing so for a -8 too - Mendy, Salah, Kamara for Kane, Doherty, Richarlison

If Kane goes wild then it could put any team with Kane ahead of the pack big time - if Kane is a differential with such good fixtures then it's a very hard chance to pass by.

Wildcard still intact, so if it goes badly then I've always got a Plan B

Indeed! Still happy with my team - and I'm comparing the direct transfers involved as Salah v Richarlison over the next two - Rich could well outscore Salah considering the fixtures, Doherty will outscore Mendy if Mendy doesn't come back for a while (slight guess there but it's a game of guesses every week) and the other comparison is bordering on laughable - Kane v Kamara so I'm very happy with the transfers involved.

In my thinking, The Doherty and Richarlison transfers have the potential to wipe out the hit taken leaving me with pure profit when thinking of Kane over Kamara.

I'm also certainly captaining Kane twice - I don't fancy Salah's fixtures and I don't like the way Kun's minutes are being curtailed.

problem with kane, is that he is not a flat track bully, nor a big game player - he is a completely random track bully.
how many of us captained him numerous times just to see him blank vs weak teams, while popping with a hat trick a week later against a mid table team?
he will score 25 goal a season - that is almost a certainty - but when? no one knows.
so, if you bring kane - bring him because of form (which he currently lacks) - not fixtures.

I'm not convinced by Kane, myself, though I wouldn't argue too hard against people getting him, because there's a good chance he could be worth it.

That said, I do find the argument that he is a differential pretty pointless. It's been discussed for years, long before I arrived on this site, I'm sure, but it is the same argument as ownership (obviously). You use it to say that buying Kane could go well, and then to say that it could go badly. Well, that much is obvious, isn't it?

It seems to be one of the major factors of buying Kane. It's the same logic as Salah at the start of the season, but used to come to the opposite conclusion.

Salah: "If he does well, you won't fall behind" [fear]

Kane: "If Kane does well, you will jump ahead" [courage]

Without writing an essay about the logical loose connections, shouldn't our decisions be focussed on the "if he does well" part, and not the "fall behind" or "jump ahead" parts. Those latter parts are solely about ownership, and proving to be biases in our decision-making, as evidenced by you calling for people to "live a little" 😆

      Nice write-up regardless, RAE 🙂

We’ve already seen a couple of big 50/50 decisions dividing FFS this season - and plenty of them have ended up fizzling out with none of the choices winning out big time.
I think the Kane debate will be a bit of the same.
Kane will get some points over the next 2-3 to keep his new owners fairly happy, but he won’t be getting enough to punish his non-owners either in my opinion.

Seems like a good moment to go for Kane. He is upping his play, has the fixtures and low ownership. Could be the perfect opportunity to go up the rankings.
As it would cost me 8 points to get him this week I'll wait next week and see if I'll get him for only one hit.

Same here, -8 now and captaining Kane instead of Kun is hardly worth it. Nor ditching Kun to Kane and take -4. But the following week vs Cardiff It is either Kun to Kane for free , or downgrading someone else for -4.

Bringing Kane in for GW 8. The biggest attraction is Kane is at home to Cardiff, in a game where Liverpool and City faces each other at Anfield, and Hazard will have to breach a parked bus at Southampton. Chelsea has not been particularly impressive in breaching parked buses thus far.

If your team has no pressing issues, Kane can always be swapped back to Kun for GW 9 against Burnley (H).

If Kane wasn’t on penalties I don’t think anyone would be bringing him in he has looked so bad. Also he would probably require a -4 which would be ridiculous

Oh but he is on pens. He tries to score at every opportunity. Against weak opposition he should get more opportunities. The guy is hungry for goals and if he gets one, he wants, two, three, four. Perfect player for fpl.

Certainly worth a go for the coming weeks and you are not signing up to having to keep him for the season.

Listen to the latest FPL Toilet for a pens discussion. Hits the nail on the head. If Spurs had been awarded 3 penalties already this season like Bournemouth then Kane would be essential, having played no better or worse in general play. Similarly King would only have had one assist all season.

I think he is worth bringing in, and I plan to do so despite other fires that neeed putting out.

It's a perfect opportunity to get a significant jump in rank. I did the same with Hazard and Alonso just before GW4 and have risen from 323k to 44k in 3 weeks.

Now many teams in front of me have similar teams and the way the fixtures have fallen over the next 2 give me the chance to really get in amongst it.

There aren't that many such opportunities that come around during an FPL season. Live a little, grab them by the balls, and get ahead of the curve.

I'd argue Kane and Aguero, are the only players who could hit big 20pt+ hauls against weak teams. Look at the number of braces/hatricks these two have hit. Sanchez had that impact on single games in past too (at arsenal). Players that you'd fear.
Salah got his points through consistency throughout last season. Last year you'd captain him to get his safe 10pts per week, you'd hope but wouldn't expect to get 20+. Not captaining salah will not kill you especially over the next two. Who's captaining salah over the next two? Then why the need to hold?
Then GW8 Kane (C) vs Cardiff. If you have fear not holding salah for chelsea, how can you go into GW8 not holding Kane?

Problem is I don't think Kane's a fixtures pick. He's no more likely to get a brace vs Huddersfield than most others. Which leaves form, and his isn't good enough for the price.

      • stat
          5 years, 7 months ago

          Yes, next week.
It always takes him some time to find his feet and I expect Spurs to do better with Alli back in the starting XI.
I want another captaincy option to choose from, preferably one with a lot of threat and likely to play close to 90 mins every week.

However I am going to be bringing in Kane as part of a mini-wildcard for an 8 point hit. I have some other issues in my team that I have to deal with so I'm going to downgrade those players in order to bring in Kane:

          - Mendy -> TAA
          - Dilva -> Knockaert
          - Pedro -> Elneny
          - Wilson -> Kane

The Elneny pick is solely based on the fact that he is only 4.3M (I'd rather not get CHO since it would take up another Chelsea spot) and that I doubt I will ever need to use my 5th mid. It would give me the following team:

          Ryan - Patricio
          Alonso - TAA - Yedlin - AWB - Doherty
          Hazard - Mane - Richarlison - Knockaert - Elneny
          Kane - Mitro - Aguero

As someone who has wildcarded to Aguero - Laca - Mitro, I'm 99% sure I'm just going to hold off & hope for no mega hauls for these three games.

I still think there's a reliance on penalties with him. Those shots towards the end of the match masked a fairly poor all-round performance just on the eye test - pretty sure he misplaced quite a few passes as well as looking a bit slower.

One thing that will change my thinking is if he hits a brace or better vs Huddersfield and is then rested / taken off for Barcelona for some weird reason. Then I'd be really tempted to do Aguero -> Kane just for Cardiff at home, but that's not likely.

I feel like one penalty and some good-looking fixtures is turning everyone's heads a bit whereas I'm more than happy to wait - from about GW15 onwards they have an absolute dream run, so I think the time to get him might be a way off. By which time he might actually be looking more like Harry Kane again - but I'm just not quite buying it yet.

I also went all in for the
              GW7 Aguero (C) - Laca - Mitro
              GW8 Kane (C) - Laca - Mitro

have you any thoughts for GW9? i've been thinking the following
              A) Kane to Firmino
              B) Kane to Aguero
              C) Hold transfers, do Kane to Firmino or double transfer with Salah back in GW10
              D) Hold transfers, switch out Kane and Laca for firmino and lukaku GW10

I think there's an opportunity over the next few gameweeks to take some educated risks.

hmm any kind of hokey-cokey like that is so risky because you'll risk dodging everyone's haul!

if Kane does well vs Cardiff + Hudd, you won't want to ditch him just before West Ham away. I would just wait and see after GW8 and the international break what your best bet is.

Yeah. I feel it's less of a risk with the lack of strong captaincy options for those weeks.
Who would you captain in GW8 if you didn't have Kane? Would you risk Lacazette?

I am doing it. Got 2 free transfers and still got my wildcard, so doing Salah>Fraser and Deeney>Kane, Then save free transfer next week and flip Salah back in again for the Huddersfield game.

Like you say it is very much an individual decision based on what other issues you have with your team, but I still vividly remember putting the armband on Kane in the Huddersfiled(a) fixture last season when he was still a bit out of sorts and he scored a brace in the first 25 minutes........and then there is Cardiff at home to follow...

I have that same gut feeling this tome around

I am in the fortunate position of having enough cash to do an Aguero to Kane hokey cokey in 8 & 9 to give me next three weeks captains

            Aguero - Brighton
            Kane - Cardiff
            Aguero - Burnley

Seriously considering as that Cardiff fixture looks good, not convinced away at Hudd and Hammers Kane will score big though and Aguero ownership and captaincy % those week looks too frightening to gamble on Arry

City never win at Anfield. Looking at making the funds with transfers this week to do Aguero to Kane (c). Cardiff and Huddersfield are the worst teams by a mile.

Is the best move this week? I don't hear anyone talking about swapping him in for aguero for Cardiff at home while aguero goes to anfield. This would potentially only require 2 transfers and do people expect aguero to outscore Kane in that gameweek? You could monitor Kane against Huddersfield and not rip your team up and then make a one week swap for aguero to hopefully catch a big haul against Cardiff!!! I would actually be worried not having salah at home to city.

Personally I think form is irrelevant with Kane. He is a volcano - it's usually a lottery predicting when he's going to explode, you just know that he will. Which is the only reason to get him in. For £10m+ you want a player who hauls a good few times a season.

By the same token witness the way he trolled many managers in the past two seasons when up against 'inferior' opposition - that risk is the only reason to avoid him.

            His form tells us nothing.

Although I really dislike that I’m going to take a hit to do it, I’ll be on Kane (c) this weekend.

Mendy and Lukaku to Yedlin (bench player) and Kane will be my moves this week.

This will act as a daisy chain to get Salah, who I don’t own, after three gameweeks (GW10) in for Kane ready for Cardiff at Anfield.

I've decided to not get him, and will therefore be hiding behind the sofa this weekend.

Great fixtures for the next few, but from 10-14 I wouldn't want him (unless him and Spurs click on a whole new level over the next 2 GW's) and would rather have Kun / Lukaku as the big hitter striker

Short terms fixtures are great? After Huddersfield they are:

            Cardiff (H)
            West Ham (A)
            Man City (H)
            Wolves (A)
            Crystal Palace (A)
            Chelsea (H)
            Arsenal (A)

So tell me how these fixtures are great? Am I missing something?

By short term, I meant (and talked about) Huddersfield, Cardiff and then West Ham, not their next 8 games.

After those first 3, it gets rougher, which I had noticed.

I have wildcard to be used in this week and my original plan was Lacazette and Hazard, alongside Salah, Aguero, Maddison and Fraser, Mitro. Then i looked at the actual games in the next three, and i saw Arsenal home to Everton and Chelsea way to West ham, it changed my sentiments. Yes, Lacazette is a very good striker and doesnt nedd much of snif before he shoots but Watford, if Arsenal plys like that vs them that´s a tough match. AS you say, Kane has two, arguably three, very good fixtures and Hazard has one good (Az and i share view on the Chelsea-Liverpool game), and Richarlison also has Fulham like Lacazette, so right now, it´is Richarlison and Kane. But it implies a certain other player out, Alonso, but in my view, getting Laporte or Trippier could in this scenario be as good as Alonso. With wilcard i think this 3 games tactic with Kane can be fruitful, barring injury, and they have to be many, i can save transfers till gw9 or eventhe gw after and then make a wc to manage the fixturesswing. Kind of tired to be template but at the same time always on the wrong side of points, slipping some points every week.

There's a lot of rambling here and banging on about season's past but you need to investigate his current goal threat rather than speculating on what could be.

I need to see a big improvement in his stats before I think about investment.

Spurs have a heavy fixture list and a threadbare squad plus most agree Kane could do with a rest, also there's bound to be some sort of psychological come down from playing Barcelona to playing Cardiff. Plus in terms of the armband, city gw7 hazard gw8 is hardly a bad idea. Also if no wc then he prob has to go in gw9 to acommodate Liverpool's fixture swing. If i was free hitting this week then Kane prob first name in but as we have to manage our transfers I'm happy to avoid and hope for limited damage

Having a struggle, decision-wise, this gw:

Doubts are Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Salah, Cairney, one of Zaha/King.
Desireables are Richarlison, a combo of Kane/Maddison or Vardy/Eriksen.

Am on 1 FT the moment. Options as I see it are:
          1. Roll transfers.
          2. Use the FT on Trippier/Shaw/Chilwell. Really not a big fan of this move, think I prefer rolling the transfer in that case. The bench is decent enough, although I'm wary of four Chelsea/Liverpool players clashing together.
          3. Do a -4 of Cairney ->Richarlison, and either Alonso->Trippier, Robertson/Mendy->Shaw, or King->Jimenez. Keep in mind I plan to play WC in GW9.
          4. Do a -4 of Salah->Eriksen, Cairney>Richarlison
          5. Do a -8 of Salah->Maddison, Cairney-Richarlison, King/Zaha->Kane.

I'm currently weighing towards option 5, 4, and 1. 5 and 4 lessens my Chelsea/Liverpool bottleneck this GW, which I like. Furthermore, both manages to get in Richarlison, who is the number 1 player I want to get in (vs Fulham). The added appeal of 5 is that I get to use the extra Salah cash to trade King or Zaha to a short-term punt on Kane.

The team I would field without a hit would be:

          Fabianski
          Robertson Doherty Alonso Mendy
          Hazard Salah Fraser
          Aguero Zaha King

If you plan to WC on gw 9 I wouldn't take a -8 hit. And I would consider doing Trippier for Mendy.
The option of downgrading Mendy and getting Richarlison in could be good too.
Anyway I would wait on Friday and news on Mendy to do it. If Mendy is fit then you can do the same with Robbo instead.

            1. Citizenkane91

Definitely waiting on Mendy. In fact, the more I think on it, I would probably transfer out Robertson ahead of Mendy with the WC in mind. I got Mendy at 6.0 and didn't take the fall just to transfer him to Trippier (I'm not convinced by Tottenham defensively) on worse terms, whereas by trading Robertson I'll get the cash on him, and still field just as good a first 11 come GW 9.

The thing which frustrates me about such a move is that it Mendy/Robertson->Trippier/Vertonghen would be just short if I also wanted Cairney->Richarlison. I'm also skeptical of Trippier, not only in terms of rotation, but also in terms of CS. Chilwell is move 3 GWS early, Shaw could be an OK pick, but I don't like their West Ham game, and Duffy/Newcastle 4.5 defender is also two GWS too early.

That's what made me look at more radical stuff like Kane/Richarlison in for Salah/King, or Richarlison/Maddison in for Salah/Cairney.

EDIT: Just realised. I could do:

              Option 6. Salah/Cairney->Sterling/Richarlison -4 for a two GW punt?

How about Salah -> Richarlison / Maddison & King -> Kane..?
Is that possible in terms of funds..?

              • 9 Years

              Definitely considering it.

Right now I'm leaning towards one of these 3:

              1. Kane, Richarlison (Salah, King out)
              2. Sterling, Richarlison (Salah, Cairney out)
              3. Sterling Vardy (Salah, King out)

Either would be a no-brainer if not for the -4. Even with it, I think I may do it for the huge upside potential. -4 points is nothing in the long run, and I have the WC for GW9.

I'll await news on Mendy. If he's fit the -4 may be unecessary.

I think Kane as opposed to Sterling or Vardy gives you an obvious captaincy candidate for GW8. I think anyone who's considering a hit this week should look ahead & analyse who they'll captain in GW8. I don't need to say how Kane can make up for -4 as captain against Cardiff at home.

yep very much so, and so I'm just going with gut instinct

I can see Hazard scoring this week and Chelsea always up their game v Liverpool imo, can see them keeping it tight, but I could be painfully wrong!

                        Good luck

Do it, Kane is the standout captain option over the 2 weeks. If you dont, you will want Kane next gwk regardless

          a) Mendy > Doherty, Neves > Richarlison (-4)
          b) Mendy > Tripper (FT)

Currently in a good position, so I don't know if I should take hits.

how about just Mendy to Doherty?

I think this move this week & have cash for next week as I'm happy with the 11 I can get out w/o a hit

That's another option. Leaves me with Doherty-AWB-Alonso-VdV in defense, Salah-Hazard-Ramsey-Neves in midfield. I then have to bench one.

If you do the former, Neves will still be bugging you next GW.

SO, depends what starting 11 you can field next GW, and how soon you're WC?

That's correct. I can get Neves out next week too but I feel like now is the time to get Richarlison (Fulham at home).

I'll probably WC after GW10 with the fixtures swing.

            Doherty.
He has the best chance of points imo (3rd highest chance of CS in the league this week according to bookies).
            Doubling up isn’t a problem.
