Who made our 2019/20 FPL Team of the Season?

Over the last week, Fantasy Football Scout site users have been voting on their favourite Fantasy Premier League goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards of 2019/20.

Our polls have now closed and we can reveal which players have made our end-of-season XI.

Goalkeeper

There were no surprises between the posts, with Nick Pope polling over three-quarters of the goalkeeper vote.

Starting the season out at a bargain £4.5m, Pope registered 15 clean sheets for Burnley and finished as the highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL.

His total of 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same Fantasy position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

More than one in five of you backed Dean Henderson in our poll but the other four candidates were a long way adrift.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold ended 2019/20 as the highest-scoring FPL defender, finishing just three points short of the record that Andrew Robertson set in that Fantasy position a year earlier.

The Liverpool right-back got close to his teammate’s 2018/19 total despite registering seven fewer shut-outs.

Four goals and an astonishing 15 assists saw him finish joint-fourth in the overall standings, with no other defender, goalkeeper or forward surpassing his 210 points.

Alexander-Arnold finished top of our poll with 31.6% of the vote, one position above John Lundstram.

A £4.0m FPL defender who operated as a box-to-box midfielder, Lundstram provided better value than any other outfielder based on the points-per-million metric.

Five goals, four assists, 10 clean sheets, 15 bonus and 144 points was a superb haul for someone so cheap, with five of his appearances resulting in double-digit hauls.

Although he lost his place and became less of a regular in the second half of the campaign, Lundstram finished the season in fitting fashion with a goal on the final day.

Matt Doherty was himself a bargain buy in 2018/19 and, despite the inevitable price rise, he made our Team of the Season for the second year running.

With four goals, eight assists, 12 clean sheets and 167 points overall, the Irishman was the only non-Liverpool player amongst the top four highest-scoring defenders.

Robertson and Virgil van Dijk trailed behind Doherty in our poll, with Leicester pairing Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira further back.

MIDFIELDERS

 1

Kevin De Bruyne always looked to be a shoo-in to make our end-of-season XI, having finished as the highest-scoring FPL asset in any position in 2019/20.

The Belgian, who started the season off at a now-unthinkable £9.5m, racked up 251 points and finished some distance ahead of the chasing pack thanks to his final-day haul.

The City midfielder started 32 of the 36 fixtures he was available for and there were 10 double-digit hauls over the course of the campaign, with his returns in Gameweeks 17 and 38+ representing high points.

Only two midfielders – both of whom were at the budget end of the scale – represented better value for money than De Bruyne (23.7) based on points per million, despite his end price of £10.6m.

What should FPL managers do with their free transfers?

Only Bruno Fernandes (8.4) averaged more points per match than De Bruyne (7.2) in 2019/20.

The inclusion of any January transfer window signing in an end-of-year XI is a contentious one but few mid-season captures have quite made the impact that the Portugal international has and he finished second in our midfielder poll.

Fernandes scored more points (117) from his Gameweek 25 debut onwards than the likes of Diogo Jota, Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Pepe did all season, with only three blanks arriving in his 14 starts.

Six double-digit hauls were registered in that time, too, a total that no other Manchester United asset could beat across the whole of 2019/20.

Making our Team of the Season for the third straight year, Mohamed Salah‘s total of 233 points was the second-highest in FPL, despite it being his lowest since moving to Merseyside in 2017.

Nine double-digit hauls arrived in 2019/20, with one of them coming in Double Gameweek 24.

Salah enjoyed home comforts more than most and he was a reliable pick for the captaincy when at Anfield, with 15 of his 19 goals arriving on Merseyside. In only four of his 18 home appearances did he blank.

Gameweek 32+ Scout Picks focus on Arsenal, Wolves and Man United

Our second Manchester United ‘midfielder’ to make our Team of the Season will likely be a forward next season.

This was by some distance Anthony Martial’s best-ever FPL season, with the 24-year-old striker racking up 17 goals, nine assists and 200 points and finishing a clear fifth among FPL midfielders in the overall points table.

Martial’s average of 6.2 points per match was also the joint-fifth-best in the division.

Having previously had something of a reputation as being injury-prone, he also became a reliable starter after an early-season spell on the sidelines, missing only one of United’s final 29 league matches.

FORWARDS

Danny Ings more than doubled his Premier League goals tally in one fell swoop in 2019/20, finding the back of the net on 22 occasions in a superb campaign for the Southampton striker.

Ings, who finished top of our forward poll, finished the season in around 2.4 million squads and had risen in price by £1.6m – by some distance the biggest beginning-to-end price change in the game.

No other forward or indeed midfielder provided better value based on FPL’s points-per-million metric (26.7).

There were only three double-digit hauls over the course of the season but his consistency of returns more than made up for it, along with his league-best bonus points tally of 40.

The Golden Boot winner and the highest-scoring Fantasy forward of 2019/20, Jamie Vardy plundered 30 attacking returns and 34 bonus points in the season just gone.

The Leicester City forward – whose starting price was a relative bargain £9.0m – was within one point of matching his highest-ever FPL score, too, which was set in the Foxes’ title-winning year of 2015/16.

Most of the damage was done in the first half of the season: from Gameweeks 3 to 18, Vardy found the back of the net on 17 occasions and set up a further five goals.

The long-serving striker averaged 8.6 points per match over this run of games, delivering six double-digit hauls and blanking on just three occasions.

A whopping 23 of his 30 attacking returns came against bottom-half clubs, which made him a relatively safe bet for the captaincy in plum fixtures.

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

While he was never going to offer the same value he provided in his debut Premier League campaign, Raul Jimenez did score four more goals and 13 more FPL points this time around.

The Mexican, a bit like Ings, wasn’t too explosive, registering just three double-digit hauls – two of them against Manchester City – over the entirety of 2019/20.

But the points arrived on a regular basis, with his 24 attacking returns coming in 21 different games.

The Mexican started 37 of Wolves’ 38 Premier League fixtures, only being benched in Gameweek 20 when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side faced two matches in the space of 48 hours.

Jimenez made our Team of the Season for the second year running, edging out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to take the third forward spot.

Yeah I'm thinking Firmino would be good value at 8m but now that you say that I'd probably just be better off going 1 upfront and getting TAA or Robbo instead.

The problem with that thought is flexible. If a striker or two becomes must own it won't be that easy to switch from 4-5-1/5-4-1.

I stuck with Firmino all last season. He’s amazing but too selfless to be good for fantasy. He pulls defenders apart to make space for runs. Don’t get any points for that.

Could be one of those under the radar picks though at 8m. I don't think hardly anyone will pick him at 8.5+

English players are typically overhyped in England.

      Generally speaking yes.

Being overhyped doesn't mean you're aren't really good though.

I'm of the opinion England only have 1 world class player at the moment in TAA - my definition is top 5 in each position.

They have world class talents in Sancho, Sterling and Gomez. These are players I class as having played a load of games at a young age, and have the potential to be top 5 in their position.

Then you have the world class potential in Greenwood and Foden.

Some have world class traits and abilities like Kane (finishing) for example, but that's where the line stops for me.

I like that you defined World Class. No room to be misinterpreted. *takes notes*

The only part I'd question is Gomez. But I'm not sure enough to put forward an argument!

young ones probably are, but Henderson has captained a PL and CL winning team and a lot of 'normal' people think he's shite. People slag off Kane and Vardy at every opportunity they get (if they don't score for more than 3 games in a row)

      1. Berbs
        • 10 Years

Kane is arguably the most overhyped player in the country. That doesn't mean he isn't good.

we must be looking in completely different places, because all I see is people slagging off Kane whenever they get a chance

            • 10 Years

Fans slag him off, media overhype him.

I think fans overhype a particular type of player, and the media definitely have their type when it comes to overhyping. If you know what I mean.

Young promising English players are overhyped as the next superstar that will win the world cup. Get a massive contract and then when they're 4 years older and England haven't won the world cup they're overpaid wastes of space.

Always. We have this toxic paradox where we project ourselves to be far better than we are and yet we simultaneously lack the belief and confidence against the major nations.

Abstract, but I think it stems from our English superiority complex from the Empire days, inventing the game and the industrial revolution. Now we have this shiny money sodden Premier League, which is good, but English football is entertaining overall due to the history of the pyramid, the atmosphere and the melting pot of British and now players from all over the world.

Undecided yet. It's such a complex issue...

If Rashford and Martial switch classifications as expected, and they're the same price, Rashford edges it for me, even without pens. But there's the added complication of Greenwood stealing their minutes.

Not sure about Bruno. He was so heavily reliant on penalties that it makes me a little cautious. But I do think that United attack can win a lot of them, so it depends on price...

If Sancho is 10m or below he might be my favourite, so long as he had a good run of fixtures. Quality players attract points.

So yeah, prices and fixtures will shape who I have, but pretty confused and uncertain atm!

When proposing a team for next year we tend to (collectively and individually) end up falling into the same trap of generally chasing last season's points. Completely understandable, not criticising, but to really get ahead we've got to really look for the fresh bargains that will emerge (I like the proposed suggestion of a cheap Che Adams over a 9m Ings). We perhaps also need to see signs in the likes of Leicester (momentum gone) and even possibly Liverpool, whom may not be as invincible next year.

One suggestion I have is to use two slots of a team such as MUN to allow flexibility over which potential third option presents itself. Of course (and the point of my post), we may be completely overestimating the likes of MUN...

I generally look at players who get into form towards the end or even during warm ups. Sometimes some players take almost a season to settle in a rhythm and then hit the ground running next season.

Che Adams seemed to be in that basket. Leicester awful form could also be down to Maddison injury and defense issues. If they keep hold of ndidi, they would be a good bet along with europeless wolves.Leeds and Brentford should alos provide 2 players

Its tricky, because the likes of Jota ended last season terrifically and then underwhelmed for months in the next (though Europa is a convenient bit of context to explain this).

Excellent point with regards to LEI and why I posted. They ended the season dismally (opposite of the previous season), BUT perhaps this can be explained due to injuries of key personnel.

Europeless Wolves will be ostensibly great

You're looking for this season's 'hidden gems'. Unfortunately, the clue is in the name. We have no idea and it's largely luck if you pick them from the off. It's really about jumping on the right bandwagons and timing your wildcard astutely.

Is the quality of the game (playoff) is good generally ??
Is it worth to stay awake i mean & find a stream ?? Don't think they stream championship games on any channel here in India. So it'll have to be a free streaming site 😛

What do people see Rich coming in at?

I’m looking at Everton as a side that with the right fixtures could provide some value. May be tempted to spread risk early on by not doubling and trebling until form is apparent

Rich is just not consistent enough to come at above 9 as a striker. May prefer raul and Ings over him.

Yep, that's definitely a fair point. Richarlison scored 13 goals both this season and last, so has shown consistently. Nothing to suggest that he can get the kind of numbers Ings had this season though.

Rich and Ings 10 point hauls? Also check Rich v Ings pre 30 and it looks a tad more equal.Thinking short term holds and not season hold and there's less in it perhaps.

Trying to gauge if he will be next season's Jimenez or Callum Wilson. I suspect in between the two and possibly more toward Callum Wilson.

Often these cheap strikers have a breakout season and we insist on having them again at their new price... only to seem them unable to replicate the previous season. Kane came good after his 5m breakout, but it took quite a while.

C Wilson did actually start well last season. How many games without blanking (or did he blank once)?

          7 GWs.

          5
          5
          5
          5
          13
          7
          6

He then has 16 blanks in a row.

Def would pay 8 for a nailed striker playing for a reasonably good attacking team.
I guess it depends on who gets changed from mid to fwd and what options we have
But if the team structure is 3-5-2 and heavy mid again as it was post lockdown then well need budget strikers so Ings would be pretty high up on that list if not at the top

I find it a little bit strange they've restricted access to the main FPL website as they haven't wiped any of the data available when calling the API, so all the stats for last season are available just not directly.

Seems like a bit premature to lock down the site, I wonder if it is going to sit like this for a while now.

Don't see why API won't work. Must be working on newly created one ??
Or just need to update the players prices maybe.

Yep, great setup they have. Allot being discussed over here on Danish TV for the match about Brentford and the DK connection with the Danish manager/staff/lots of players/and same FC Midtjylland owner, and setup also works really well for both teams with the younger players moving between both clubs.

Now that is the million dollar question which only he knows the answer to. Personally I will be surprised if he does extend it for another 3 years but you never know the whole FFP has strangely made him more committed to the club which can only give us a bit more hope.

That said Arteta is a ready made replacement, I have been really impressed with him at Arsenal.
