Who made our 2019/20 FPL Team of the Season?

Over the last week, Fantasy Football Scout site users have been voting on their favourite Fantasy Premier League goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders and forwards of 2019/20.

Our polls have now closed and we can reveal which players have made our end-of-season XI.

Goalkeeper

There were no surprises between the posts, with Nick Pope polling over three-quarters of the goalkeeper vote.

Starting the season out at a bargain £4.5m, Pope registered 15 clean sheets for Burnley and finished as the highest-scoring goalkeeper in FPL.

His total of 120 saves was the fourth-highest in the division while nobody in the same Fantasy position came close to matching his 23 bonus points.

More than one in five of you backed Dean Henderson in our poll but the other four candidates were a long way adrift.

Defenders

Trent Alexander-Arnold ended 2019/20 as the highest-scoring FPL defender, finishing just three points short of the record that Andrew Robertson set in that Fantasy position a year earlier.

The Liverpool right-back got close to his teammate’s 2018/19 total despite registering seven fewer shut-outs.

Four goals and an astonishing 15 assists saw him finish joint-fourth in the overall standings, with no other defender, goalkeeper or forward surpassing his 210 points.

Alexander-Arnold finished top of our poll with 31.6% of the vote, one position above John Lundstram.

A £4.0m FPL defender who operated as a box-to-box midfielder, Lundstram provided better value than any other outfielder based on the points-per-million metric.

Five goals, four assists, 10 clean sheets, 15 bonus and 144 points was a superb haul for someone so cheap, with five of his appearances resulting in double-digit hauls.

Although he lost his place and became less of a regular in the second half of the campaign, Lundstram finished the season in fitting fashion with a goal on the final day.

Matt Doherty was himself a bargain buy in 2018/19 and, despite the inevitable price rise, he made our Team of the Season for the second year running.

With four goals, eight assists, 12 clean sheets and 167 points overall, the Irishman was the only non-Liverpool player amongst the top four highest-scoring defenders.

Robertson and Virgil van Dijk trailed behind Doherty in our poll, with Leicester pairing Caglar Soyuncu and Ricardo Pereira further back.

MIDFIELDERS

 1

Kevin De Bruyne always looked to be a shoo-in to make our end-of-season XI, having finished as the highest-scoring FPL asset in any position in 2019/20.

The Belgian, who started the season off at a now-unthinkable £9.5m, racked up 251 points and finished some distance ahead of the chasing pack thanks to his final-day haul.

The City midfielder started 32 of the 36 fixtures he was available for and there were 10 double-digit hauls over the course of the campaign, with his returns in Gameweeks 17 and 38+ representing high points.

Only two midfielders – both of whom were at the budget end of the scale – represented better value for money than De Bruyne (23.7) based on points per million, despite his end price of £10.6m.

What should FPL managers do with their free transfers?

Only Bruno Fernandes (8.4) averaged more points per match than De Bruyne (7.2) in 2019/20.

The inclusion of any January transfer window signing in an end-of-year XI is a contentious one but few mid-season captures have quite made the impact that the Portugal international has and he finished second in our midfielder poll.

Fernandes scored more points (117) from his Gameweek 25 debut onwards than the likes of Diogo Jota, Ismaila Sarr and Nicolas Pepe did all season, with only three blanks arriving in his 14 starts.

Six double-digit hauls were registered in that time, too, a total that no other Manchester United asset could beat across the whole of 2019/20.

Making our Team of the Season for the third straight year, Mohamed Salah‘s total of 233 points was the second-highest in FPL, despite it being his lowest since moving to Merseyside in 2017.

Nine double-digit hauls arrived in 2019/20, with one of them coming in Double Gameweek 24.

Salah enjoyed home comforts more than most and he was a reliable pick for the captaincy when at Anfield, with 15 of his 19 goals arriving on Merseyside. In only four of his 18 home appearances did he blank.

Gameweek 32+ Scout Picks focus on Arsenal, Wolves and Man United

Our second Manchester United ‘midfielder’ to make our Team of the Season will likely be a forward next season.

This was by some distance Anthony Martial’s best-ever FPL season, with the 24-year-old striker racking up 17 goals, nine assists and 200 points and finishing a clear fifth among FPL midfielders in the overall points table.

Martial’s average of 6.2 points per match was also the joint-fifth-best in the division.

Having previously had something of a reputation as being injury-prone, he also became a reliable starter after an early-season spell on the sidelines, missing only one of United’s final 29 league matches.

FORWARDS

Danny Ings more than doubled his Premier League goals tally in one fell swoop in 2019/20, finding the back of the net on 22 occasions in a superb campaign for the Southampton striker.

Ings, who finished top of our forward poll, finished the season in around 2.4 million squads and had risen in price by £1.6m – by some distance the biggest beginning-to-end price change in the game.

No other forward or indeed midfielder provided better value based on FPL’s points-per-million metric (26.7).

There were only three double-digit hauls over the course of the season but his consistency of returns more than made up for it, along with his league-best bonus points tally of 40.

The Golden Boot winner and the highest-scoring Fantasy forward of 2019/20, Jamie Vardy plundered 30 attacking returns and 34 bonus points in the season just gone.

The Leicester City forward – whose starting price was a relative bargain £9.0m – was within one point of matching his highest-ever FPL score, too, which was set in the Foxes’ title-winning year of 2015/16.

Most of the damage was done in the first half of the season: from Gameweeks 3 to 18, Vardy found the back of the net on 17 occasions and set up a further five goals.

The long-serving striker averaged 8.6 points per match over this run of games, delivering six double-digit hauls and blanking on just three occasions.

A whopping 23 of his 30 attacking returns came against bottom-half clubs, which made him a relatively safe bet for the captaincy in plum fixtures.

What's the best strategy for choosing forwards in FPL? 8

While he was never going to offer the same value he provided in his debut Premier League campaign, Raul Jimenez did score four more goals and 13 more FPL points this time around.

The Mexican, a bit like Ings, wasn’t too explosive, registering just three double-digit hauls – two of them against Manchester City – over the entirety of 2019/20.

But the points arrived on a regular basis, with his 24 attacking returns coming in 21 different games.

The Mexican started 37 of Wolves’ 38 Premier League fixtures, only being benched in Gameweek 20 when Nuno Espirito Santo’s side faced two matches in the space of 48 hours.

Jimenez made our Team of the Season for the second year running, edging out Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to take the third forward spot.

I think he should be more like 8.5. He had 69 points in 888 minutes, so about 7 points per 90. This is not too far off of Mahrez (175 points in 1934 minutes is about 8 points per 90), who will probably go up to 9.5. It's even comparable to KDB between 2015-2018.

David Silva was 7.5 but cannot check his stats to compare. At least Pep roulette was predictable with Foden after restart.

You may be right, FPL does sometimes underprice players. I just think if he does come in at 7.5 or below, he's underpriced.

Jesus, for one, has always come in rather expensive despite being second choice to Aguero. I'm thinking when it comes to Man City players, FPL would prefer to err on the high side with prices, lest someone get injured and the replacement suddenly be very underpriced.

Also worth noting: After the restart, Man City played 10 league matches and Foden played 535 minutes (53.5 per match that the team played). Extrapolated over a whole season, that would be 2033 minutes. And that was with Dilva present and no CMs or wingers injured.

            He’s in the 3.0 - 4.0 points per appearance region (69 points/23 appearances = 3.0 PPA)

If he got 30 appearances next year, and improved his points per appearance from 3.0 up to 4.0 he’d probably get around the 120 points mark plus or minus

6.5 might be encourage people to take a chance on him, but owners will need to be prepared for runs like 1 attacking return from 6 consecutive appearances & 21 goals scored vs
(sou, NEW, bri, BOU, wat, NOR)

You never know though, he could improve his output & emerge as a bargain at 6.5-7.5 - he’s still very young after all

But when you think you could get Laporte for example for that 6.5 or maybe even 6.0 - it makes it harder to fit Foden in with a City slot, at least early doors...

He only started 9 matches though. With Dilva gone, he should start significantly more often, which should raise his PPA even without an improvement in performance.

Yeah that’s why I was increasing both his PPA from its current 3.0 up to 4.0 & bumping his appearances up from 23 to 30 - that would get his points up from current 69 to around 120-ish (always plus or minus though)

6.5 seems fair enough given 18 blanks in 23 appearances but Dilva’s departure might drive it a small bit higher...

Those last 6 games showed what he’s capable of though (in a bad way) and probably tempered any high hopes after the Burnley/Liverpool games

On the flip side though, 888 minutes shows he didn't play very much, so I really can't see 8.5 with this uncertainty over playing time.

Sub appearances can really skew PP90 though

A player who comes on in the last 10 minutes of a game is getting over 9 PP90 for example (18 PP90 for last 5 mins appearance, 90 PP90 for last minute etc) & Foden probably gathered up a good few of those, particularly early on

        I was thinking around 7.0,maybe 7.5

6.5 probably too cheap, but then again he may only get 125-ish next season which would still be a big improvement to 88 this year - one to watch for sure

It could make a difference, but I also looked at just the games where he played at least 60 minutes. In those 7 games he scored 45 points in 580 minutes. That's 6.98 points per 90.

For the record, Dilva had 139 points in 1821 minutes. So about twice the points in twice the minutes.

My guess is 1821 minutes this season, with Dilva gone, would be a reasonable bet for Foden. Foden also sometimes plays on the wing, giving him more goal threat than Dilva, so I think he can beat Dilva's point total in the same amount of minutes, and deserves a higher price.

I’d say his PP90 is still getting skewed by truncated minutes though - he’s came off the bench for 15 or less minutes on 8 occasions this season (8 points in those 45 minutes = 16.0 PP90)

In his other 15 appearances (9 starts/6 subs) he got 59 points (3.9 points per appearance) returning in 5 appearances (5G 2A) & blanking in the other 10 appearances

With 18 blanks in his 23 appearances he could even com win around 6.5, but the city factor and Dilva leaving might have them give him an extra 0.5 or 1.0 up to 7.0+

His season really consisted of 2 games - Burnley & Liverpool - and he was actually very disappointing from an FPL perspective either side of those two games

Especially getting one attacking return from City’s 21 goals during the closing run of blue fixtures below (he appeared in them all):

Why does fpl stick to this rigid +£0.5/-£0.5m price structure anyway?

Why not value a player like lets say Foden at £7.2/3m to start with if need be?

Because they want casuals to play every penny without having to worry to get it even. I also think it's stupid. Giving fair prices for TAA, VvD and Robbo would be easier if the price difference could between .5 and 1.0 million.

Sure after a gw or two you will be probably offloading a player that you lost value on or cashing in on a player that increased in value anyways which will leave your team with an uneven tv and maybe some money itb regardless.

I reckon if fpl started pricing between the lines that it would make a bit more interesting and involve a bit more head scratching when drafting your gw1 team.

Same way as they decide now, they dont explain thought process behind just give is prices and then we argue if they right or not.

Having initial prices fine tuned to 0.1m would in my opinion gave us more variance between GW1 teams across the board.

I agree that we shouldn't necessarily be writing off Fulham defence already. Their style seems a lot different under Parker.

I was sort of wondering about Rodak. Like how in 2018-19 Etheridge was a pretty decent cheap option even though Cardiff got relegated. Goalkeepers are a strange beast in FPL, since their FPL points are not as highly correlated with the team's performance as people think they should be.

So I started last season with Bournemouth assets their favourable fixtures and known prior attacking capabilities of previous seasons I had Callum Wilson and one other. This year I plan to avoid this completely one such example after watching the restart and the prompted teams would be if Sheffield United opening four fixtures featured say featured Fulham , palace , Newcastle and Leeds to go big on their defence asset(s) yes some will want a double up even with the price hikes of each player
But it’s fixture traps like this that caught me cold last year to begin with (double Liverpool defence also). So I’m hoping I don’t have to WC early and my team from the get go is more manageable and better balanced not catering to fixtures (double ups etc)
Is there any team that you think early fixtures could be a trap for ? Revitalised arsenal , Leicester city attackers if easy fixtures ?

Arsenal could be tricky even if they do score quite a few goals. Their squad is fairly large, so unless Arteta settles on a more stable XI, you could be facing unexpected benchings.

Harrison doesn't look likely to be nailed. Leeds seem very intent on signing a wide player, possibly Buendia. I guess I'm assuming Costa will be nailed cos he's only recently been signed, but i appreciate that might not be the case. Harrison could fit in aswell, but I'd monitor closely

Fair one, I do actually prefer Harrison, not actually sure why he signed Costa, maybe it was incase they didn't promote, I think now they should be aiming higher. Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye on any attacking signings they make

I think unless Bielsa signs a high quality playmaker, Hernandez will have to play a large part next season. Bielsa's formation and tactics are highly dependent on a playmaker like Hernandez. I agree though at 35, surely he needs to be replaced. If not, he will play alot but his minutes will be managed i.e. 60 mins per game.
If there's no signing though, Hernandez is on my watchlist

5.5. Left footed centre back. Laporte also. Not so easy to play right side as vey few left footers do.

seen someone make this point on twitter, doesn't make any sense to me.

right footers play left side all the time. The reason it is less common for left footers to play right side is there are far less left footed centre backs, so it is rare there are two in the same team.

people just looking for problems that aren't real.

I think you miss the point. If not for the last sentence I would ignore it. There are 90% right sided people who learn to play the left side (a 10 times larger pool) Left sided players are rarer and tend to play allotted positions and a rarely needed to play the other side. Do you get that?
It is rare they play in the same team because it is rare both left sided players. If you want to investigate, check on Laporte and Ake careers.

Of course they are real. The passing and ball-carrying angles are very limited if you don't play at your natural side as a CB.

Just compare the variety of passes someone like Laporte can play from LCB with any right-footed player there, even someone like VVD. Virgil, even though he is really good with the ball, will always have a tendency to go inside, meanwhile Laporte is much more comfortable with going outside to the touchline. It makes the build-up much faster and unpredictable, and Laporte was the only left footed CB, which is why City suffered so much in possession when he was injured.

Ake comes as his cover (also possibly LB), but will still play a lot due to rotations. First choice RCB will be another transfer - Koulibaly / Diego Carlos / whoever.

Koulibaly is a LCB. Being right footed doesn't mean you can play RCB.

Some right footed LCBs who played there and never RCB: VVD, Terry, Vidic, Ramos.

I know Koulibaly plays as LCB at Napoli, but there are no indications he can't be RCB.

He played a few games there in 2018/2019 when he was partnered with Luperto (left-footed). All of his other partners over the years were right-footed: Albiol, Maksimovic, Chiriches, Manolas.

Of course it happens when there are only about 23% left-footed players in general. But they will never have the passing options of a left footed player as LCB. The only one who comes close is probably Hummels, because he is absolutely elite using outside of his foot.

Pep will 100% be asked about playing Laporte and Ake together btw., wait for his response.

I'm not sure that I could ever contemplate a Mourinho attacker - you just don't know where he's going to make them play. Son and Kane will still get goals, but I doubt whther they'll ever be the same free scoring pair as under Poch. However, if the price is right ......

I know where you’re coming from

But under Mou Son post lockdown - when he lost striker role - still managed over 5 ppm - pretty much bang on his average and Kane reverted your something much closer to a cf role.

My preconception about Mou sides is that cf is a solid pick - but as you say the price needs to be right

If I could be sure that Kane would play a normal cf role then I'd be all over him, assuming that his price was sensible. It's too easy to forget that he's probably one of the three best finishers in the world. I'm just not convinced that the Spurs set up is ideal for his supply line.

We'll have to see how the delayed starts pan out, but I'm hoping to set up with United/City/Wolves assets on the bench, 11 starters, and judicious use of 1FTs to manage the first 2-3 GWs without needing to WC.

KDB and Bruno on the bench. First sub ready to step up. Rarely is your 2nd and 3rd sub called on. Don't see it as especially problematic. Might all change when price and fixture list is out of course.

If you can post a competitive score after game week three without using your wild card then you'll potentially be in a strong position for the first half of the season. If there are several blank game weeks for the big clubs at the beginning though I suspect that it will very tough to resist the lure of the "Play Wild Card" button.

Yeh, averagee scores first 2-3 GWs. Bear in mind BGWs mean DGWs further down the line. Setting up a WC squad to catch a stretch of DGWs, poss after the International Break after GW4 could potentially leave early wildcarders in my wake.

Thinking much the same - bb when everyone else goes WC. The unknowable part - and the bit that probably sinks the strategy - is more teams will blank unless they fix fixtures so that the Euro teams blank against each other

A side thought here is to what extent you want to prioritise players from City United Wolves early

They will be operating on less rest and training than others. They could be coming off 3 weeks hols and 1 week of training. Lampard has been pushing for Chelsea to get a break even if they go out this week.

Yeh, I'll be monitoring the degree of fatigue in their final matches and media noise prior to their first PL game. Nothing's set in stone but I have an underlying strategy as a foundation.

One way to look at it is this:

OGS doesn’t - as at now - have many options and despite late season form fatigue was clearly biting towards the end. One attacking United asset could be enough early

Pep is Pep. Pep coming off minimal training and rest is likely doubly Pep. KdB may well become rotation prone - that only really happened late season post lockdown

Wolves have a thin squad. The assets to have are Jim and defence. Jim may be priced out of it anyway and it’s not hard to put together a Wolves free defence really

I'm expecting Wolves players to get justified price boosts, but ones that will put them out of my range. With my triple Liverpool defence, there's no room for Doh or Boly. Jimi, as you say, will likely to too expensive for my intended front line.

For United, my eyes are on Bruno, and Greenwood as a perma-supersub. Whether they'll be ready for their first PL game or not is what I need to monitor.
From City, KDB is the only one I'm contemplating - again, he might need a rest for the first game or two - that will be monitored also. It could be that I wait until the Int Break for all of them, thus starting with them in the same Gw as all the wildcarder - still giving me the edge over them. Let's see!

Haven’t got as far as pencilling in names but I’ve been eying this strategy for a while - we seem to be on the same page.

May diverge from you here - if it falls out this way - Kun over KdB as my premium City asset. Value call and Kane Auba (if of course) seem intriguing potential swaps. Also disinclined to go triple Liverpool at the back from the off

I don't doubt City won't lose their first PL match - the issue is who lines up and who gets rested.

Ping - A premium striker strategy with switching between Kun/Kane/Auba (if striker) is interesting, but it's not for me. Plus I'd go Kev over Kun due to expected minutes.

But yeh, our overall grand strategies are not far apart.

Surely we get price tasters first

It’s also going to take a while for them to price out promoted sides and they might be a little careful there given Lord debacle.

A week anyway is my guess

Has anyone tried to replicate last year's 'efficient value' post and come up with the most effective dead team for the last season?

So far I've got one with 2203 points, which to my surprise doesn't include Salah on account of the value found in Liverpool elsewhere...

    Pope (4.5)
    Trent - Van Dijk - Doherty (4.0 x 2)
    De Bruyne - Sterling - Mane - Martial (4.5)
    Vardy - Ings - Jimenez

That's very interesting. Of course, all of those players will get healthy price rises, but structure-wise, it's what I'm going for:

3 premium nailed defenders (Doh wasn't premium back then)
        2 premium, 2 high midfielders
        2 or 3 mid-priced forwards

I think the sub-10, almost-premium borderline will be really interesting, as it's where KDB and Vardy sat last year. Not sure anyone with that scoring power will be there this time - maybe United forwards.

Right, I'm looking for a couple of mids in that bracket. Prob Pulisic fits the bill, then maybe Rashford, also Son, Pepe.

Pulisic looks great but Chelsea may take a little time to settle down especially with Europe still to go this season.

          Trent - Robertson - Doherty
          Salah - KDB - Willian - Martial

I said it a few days ago - my gut is the transfer won't happen

It just seems too good to be true from a utd fan perspective - generally speaking (Bruno aside) their transfer dealings over the last 6-7 years have been less hit and more miss, with lots of PR bluster every summer that ultimately doesn't materialize into much

To the UTD fans, what scenario would you prefer?

    1.
Sing Sancho at a record fee, highest paid player, possible oooh's and aaah's from other players about wages.

    Or

    2.
Ditch Sancho. Greenwood, Rashford and Martial nailed and sign another versatile wide player to pick up the pieces?

That versatile player will likely be Grealish, by the way. Not sure he's what United need. Far better go all-out for Koulibaly as CD is where the biggest hole is.

      1. FOO FIGHTER

I reckon Grealish would do far better with better players around him and would be a real good signing for UTD but Villa will price him out of a move.

Koulibaly is 30 next year. No thank you.

Alaba (28) is out of contract next year, and can play both CB and LB. Might be better value from him, and he can provide cover for the fragile LB position.

I think United will go younger though.

Alaba would be an upgrade and cover 2 positions, as you say. Defence gets easily turned and Slab is slow. Needs a speedster alongside him.

300k wages I could stomach, but if it gets to 400k it will be a problem.

But sources like Bild and Fabrizio Romano are saying the deal is almost complete, and the British sources are saying United are willing to walk away. I'm inclined to trust Romano over the British press rumours tbh...

These big deals are tricky. I guess the negotiations between Dortmund and UTD about fee and payment structure will be the sticking point of whether terms between Sancho and UTD can follow through?

If not, UTD will go back and forth with Sancho's package if Dortmund squeeze every last drop which they most definitely will try do.

Sancho at £300 to £400k a week over 5 years is a hell of a lot of money for a young player. If Sancho signs and he goes tits up at UTD = one hell of a lot of money fixed in a failed contract.

    3. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Signing Sancho preferable - Greenwood can gradually put Martial under pressure & replace him in 3 or 4 seasons time (he'll sill only be 21 in 2023) and still easily get 30-40 appearances a season while he's at it (more if there are injury or fitness problems)

His wages and/or the wages of any of the other players are of zero concern to me, I wouldn't even try to dictate an optimal compensation structure for a premier league dressing room (If you buy a big car, its going to have a big exhaust etc)

Still skeptical that the deal will actually happen though, utd will find a way to mess it up

Yeah agree it's very subjective - but its entirely possible that he could have dropped the same howlers (or even more!) had he been on a lower contract for example, we just don't know that wages are even a factor, same with Alexis - which is why i would try to separate out Sancho's wages from the equation

Personal terms between Sancho & United are already agreed if credible sources are to be believed.

It's more in the region of 250k rather than the exaggerated figures of 300/400k floating around here.

Sancho will eat up most of our budget and I would rather focus on other weak areas.

CB, CDM, CAM cover, striker and right wing - 6 positions

      Verthongen/dunk/Torres
      Gueye/ndidi/Savic
      James/grealish
      Cavani/king
      Perisic/Willian

Would have preferred ndidi, James, ake, Willian and a decent striker this window.
Willian/perisic would have played 2-3 years and post him, greenwood would have been a starter

Why have Liverpool stopped spending money?

Is the issue with Fenway or Klopp?

    1. Andy_Social
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Because they don't need to. When Klopp needs a player - VVD, Alisson, he gets him whatever the cost.

Any new player now will not be better than the first choice starting XI. So a new player would have to be backup. A proper Class A star is not willing to be backup so you have to go B-list. Mostly it's better to nurture classy youths for that role, which is what Liverpool are doing very well at the moment.

Next year, the ages of the likes of Salah and mane will start to be an issue, then is the time to strike. The club will prob spend this year identifying those targets.

That's all valid, but my spin on it is Fenway are far more financially responsible than their challengers (United, City and Chelsea) and the club has a manager who gets far more out of what he has than his rivals.

The loss of income has hit them hard due to match day revenue, tv revenue etc from Covid.

Of course there is the cash from winning the PL so we will sign a couple of players. Outs will be dependant on who we can sign.

They're hiding behind the pandemic excuse but didn't spend anything last year either, despite some big gaps in the squad.

I imagine the cost of the new stand, new Kirkby training complex and contract extensions is playing a part too.

Liverpool operate with a clear sell to buy policy. It's no surprise Lovren was sold for 10m last week, and the club are now reliably linked and seemingly close to signing Jamal Lewis for 10m.

Those links are from the Watford end as opposed to Liverpool, who are tight lipped with transfers until anything is close to being done ala Jamal Lewis.

Watford reporters say Liverpool, Wolves and Palace are interested. If true, I'd imagine he would only be signed once Shaqiri has a suitor.

Sane to Bayern has pretty much covered Ake and Torres fees for City.

Dilva leaving also opens up space on the wage bill for them.

        Same with Sanchez leaving UTD.

We can get in players for whoever leaves as in the case of Lovren and perhaps for Lalana.

    My current FanTeam squad.

    Ederson
    TAA VVD Robertson Tierney James
    KDB Fernando Foden Grealish
    Werner

    James I’m least sure about.

I’ve gone for triple Pool defence instead. There is an obscene amount of value in those three and, if you take away Salah or Mane you can slot in KDB and Fernando who are just as good.

Makes 2 of us now (FPL - I dunno what fanteam is).

The way I see it - first thing I want from premium defenders is clean sheets. Assists and goals are a bonus but not to priority. Liverpool can reasonably manage close to 50% clean sheets. After them, who? I see none. So defenders like Doherty will get assists but there will be a gap between him and VVD for clean sheets. Repeat: there is NO other club that give me confidence in matching Liverpool for clean sheets.

Midfield - I miss out on Salah and Mane, but unlike defence, there are plenty of options that can match them in points and value. Plenty of midfield options from City, United, Chelsea and the rest. No other options in defence.

          And that is my case!

You went with the triple Liverpool defence. Nice. It's going to be interesting once fixtures come out what changes. My mock draft is.

      Fabianski
      TAA - VVD - Boly - Tierney
      Mane - KDB - Bruno - Traore - Soucek
      Jiminez

      Martin - O'Connell - 4.0 - 4.0

Martin is back up to Fabs so I always have a keeper mate and Jack O'Connell is a Sheff Utd 1st team defender for 4.5

Yeah with no chips etc it makes sense to maximize your 1st 11. I think Vestergaard at 4.0 could be worth you adding to your bench if you dont already own him.

The triple Pool defense. I don't mind it. I think defense and midfield is where the points are. But I think Salah is worth the outlay.

      Currently switched to:

      Fabianski Nyland
      TAA VvD Davies White Mari
      Salah KdB Sterling Fernandes Soucek
      Adams 4.0 4.0

Yes, I'll have to play a 4.0 defender every week, but I think there's enough choice there I can pull it off.

Keeper is gonna be one of Pickford/Fabianski/Ryan/McCarthy depending on fixtures. You score 0.5pt per save, so I think having cheap goalies is much better than Ederson. Fabianski especially gets loads of saves.

How many of Liverpool Henderson"s no shows were down to injury?

The completely wild observation is if you ignore the colour of his shirt is that he offered great value at nearly 4 ppm at 5.5 falling to 5.2. Great makeweight material!!!!!

Shelvey and Snow would be his closest competitors.

For instance he ended up within 10-12 points of Traore and Barnes who both had similarly limited minutes and will surely come in way higher than him this time around.

Avoid the double up at the back and decide one super premium Liverpool mid is enough and it almost begins to add up.

      Love preseason 😉

It's the double defence which kills it. But even then his value isn't far off VVD/Robbo in absolute terms. If you thought you could spend the 1.5/2 mill extra wisely .....

There were also plenty of no shows before lockdown and that final injury. Makeweights need to be nailed really no? Can't remember but I'm assuming a few of those were Klopp simply giving him a breather - the defence didn't get any.

We've been chasing him for 18 months now I think. Very unlikely to splash enough cash. Dougie Freedman our transfer "king" has a decent eye for a prospect but is naturally inclined to a Ayew type solution,

We've effectively sold him at a loss - option to buy included in loan agreement! Frankly hilarious

He was very much spotted by Freedman and RH just didn't rate him. There was zero resistance from fans when he was sent on his way.

There's a rather beautiful symmetry with Ayew effectively replacing him this season - one of the best 2 million transfers in PL history balancing giving away a player at al loss who is on the radar of European giants.

They scored the same number of goals with Mitrovic playing 800 min less. He has PL experience and plays in a club he's been playing for a long time. Even if Watkins joins a PL club, Mitrovic is easily the better option in my opinion.

LFC's transfer window will be based on whether there are better backup options for the likes of Origi, Shaqiri, Ox and likes Keita and Milner. We will struggle to find buyers at the right price for Saqiri and Origi, that is if any clubs are even interested in taking them and then it will cost more to replace them and replacement will come knowing they will have bench duty.

Lovren will be replaced without a doubt. With whom is yet to be seen.

Other than that our fully fit starting eleven is as solid as a mountian. Not like Shaqiri, Origi and Milner, Keita and Lalana played much anyway this past season.

A case to be made for Dendocker even at 5.0?

The starting point would need to be a fifth mid is a slot where you try and avoid any transfers. You miss out on potential trains such as Cantwell but you also avoid Ceballos. I made the Cantwell move but never saw any pay out simply because he was always a benching prospect. Pretty sure I'd have done better just to stick.

Donkey over the season did ok actually. Just ok of course but better if you factor in 3 transfers not happening and an effective -12. There are very few names in his price bracket (up to 5.0) that bettered his 100 points and it's not fanciful to think next time he might 5/6 and not 4 goals.

    1. FOO FIGHTER
      • 1 Year

The problem with Dendo is 2.6 ppg. A 4.5 defender will either match him or outscore him.

        Yep

Counter argument is that at some stage you'll need the 5th mid/8th attacker or need to make a budget defender transfer.

This line of thought requires infinite patience and really long term planning - I won't be doing it of course 😉

I don't see the point of paying the additional 0.5 for a bench fodder. Even if he scores 5/6 goals, he'll probably only come on in your team a few times during the season and it will be very unlikely that you'll have him in your team rather than your bench when he scores those goals.

        Agreed in principle

I've just been looking at my transfer history though. One set of transfers I find it hard to justify to myself is the ones that fiddle around the edges. Minimal gain likely.

I'm sightly reluctant to have all my fodder at the back. In principle I'd be aiming for one fodder in a forward position. Get on the equivalent of Rico Kelly and it can go pear shaped - forcing a transfer.

        Merely pondering options here.
