The Community Round Up

The pre-season stepped up a gear this week with the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football, plus the revelation of a new, additional format being run by the Fantasy Premier League.

Our community writers and hot topic posters were on hand to share their top tips for success in the Fantasy games that are set to launch this summer, as well as for those that have already opened their doors.

Also discussed this week was the potential wealth of striker options next season, advice on getting the most out of the pre-season programme of friendlies and whether the FPL price setters are on form, based on the handful of player valuations already announced.

Over in our Members table section, our resident statisticians have been looking at teams that raced out of the blocks last season, 2016/17’s misfiring strikers and Sky bonus magnets.

We round off with good news from our community’s competitors in the Euro U21 finals.

The Community Articles

The release of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was among several launches that came under focus from our community writers.

Buffrey was on hand to offer a beginner’s guide to this limited transfer format, while Disable kicked off a Rate My Team discussion with a sneak preview of his initial Sky team selection.

European Cup qualification has piqued the interest of Lone Wolf, who has created his own Fantasy game around the early stages of the Champions League and Europa competitions.

Elsewhere, FPL Dreams elbowed his way into our community article section with his excellent guide to the Fantasy Tour De France game, and Niemi previewed the next set of fixtures in Eliteserien, the Norwegian top flight Fantasy game.

Congratulations to Giggs Boson for scooping the latest community writer of the month prize of a £20 Amazon voucher. His analysis of last season’s clean sheets was the most popular article in June, according to your votes.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The Fantasy Premier League revealed it is to launch a draft game for the 2017/18 season this week, with FC5750HC the first to let our community know of this exciting addition.

Mark was keen to find out your reaction to the announcement, while Jack Wilshire canvassed the views of those who are familiar with the draft format.

Hot topic poster dorrian123 also discussed the opening of the Sky Sports game this week, with the community given a sneak preview on Monday, two days before the official release.

Whichever format is being considered, nailing the best formation four our line-ups is remains key. Zoumas Bloomers wonders whether this could be the year that a 4-3-3 set up prevails, given the increasing number of striker and full-back options. Lionel’s Messy Boxers went one step further and pondered whether five at the back could reap rewards in 2017/18.

One disappointing aspect of 2016/17 was the poor selection of forward options across the price brackets. But, according to Lateriser12, Fantasy managers could be spoilt for choice in attack next term.

However, such an array of options up top will depend on a range of rumoured striker transfers coming to fruition this summer, which could make the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and even Manchester United’s forgotten man Wayne Rooney viable options.

Alexandre Lacazette’s move from Lyon to Arsenal is one significant transfer that has already materialised. Bibdh Subedi wonders whether the French striker, who averages almost a goal every two games at club level, will be a success in north London.

Lacazette was also one of a handful of players who had his FPL price tag revealed ahead of next week’s launch. Earlier in the week Mark asked which player prices you are most keen to find out first with Nonprophet particularly keen to find out the value of Liverpool’s wealth of midfield options.

Other announced player prices under discussion were Burnley stopper Tom Heaton’s valuation of 5.0 and Brighton set-piece specialist Anthony Knockaert’s 6.0m price tag. The former’s valuation prompted Net Gains to ask whether spending a total of 8.5 on goalkeepers is a viable strategy.

Fantasy planning is set to take a new twist from this weekend onwards, as Premier League sides begin their pre-season programme of friendlies. We asked for your top tips on getting the best pointers for the season ahead from these matches.

The summer schedule of the three promoted teams will be under scrutiny, particularly as they are set to struggle to maintain top flight status, according to our discussion on Brighton, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town’s prospects next season.

All three do have kind opening schedules on their side. To find out how the other 17 teams usually fare at the start of a campaign, we urge you to read Buffrey’s hot topic, which delves into the history books to see which teams have traditionally enjoyed a flying start.

Finally, to whet our appetite for the campaign ahead FPL Dreams sparked a discussion on our best and worst ever Premier League moments.

To view all our discussions, please visit our our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

To mark the launch of Sky Sports Fantasy Football, I’ve created a table looking at the game’s bonus point magnets. I’ve also made this table on baseline bonus points in FPL, after this set of data was added to the Members area this week via Update Three.

Jigger and Pony has added to Buffrey’s opening fixture analysis with a look at the most attacking teams last season over their opening six matches.

Elsewhere, Doosra has been finding out which strikers last season missed the most chances and hit the woodwork rather than the back of the net.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie  for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The 146 strong Fantasy Football Scout league emerged triumphant in the Euro U21 Fantasy game league of leagues, finishing top and 46 points ahead of Super-Liga Valtovia. Kroksted finished first in the league, with Ryan Seechurn taking second.

Colmans Mustard is still at the top of the community’s league in Eliteserien and in the H2H league FC Smack has taken the lead after Dutch Warriors suffered two defeats in a row.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Looking like 3-5-2, or is it? If Charlie "I'll take the penalties in future" Austin comes in at 6.5 then the boring 3-4-3 is very much on.

Penalties could make Defoe good value too, even at 8.5. BOU were awarded the most pen's last season, 10, and Defoe had a 100% success rate at SUN last season, 5/5.

Worry with Southampton, as Prokoptas article for us said, is the penchant for 4-2-3-1 by Pellegrino so the worry could be that Austin and Gabbiadini (plus ShLong) competing for the lone forward spot.

Unsure yet. Was sad to see Tekkers at 8.0, too expensive for the 3rd striker slot imo in a 3-4-3. Could it even be 4-3-3 time?

Good article mate, enjoyed it 😉 Not too sure Pied as a real threat to Cedric, seems like he was very much a Puel signing and not a very good RB. Cedric of course is a Euro 16 winner and there's even been some talk of him being sought after by bigger clubs.

For me a fit Chaz gets the nod up top and pen's too. Proven goalscorer, keeps fit and 6.5/7.0 will look peanuts.

How long is FPL usually unavailable due to updating before it launches? I'm sure it's usually a good few days. Seems they are cutting it a bit fine for a Monday or Tuesday start. 😕

The game will go down on launch day. All of the servers will be up and running. Then they'll go through a switch over period while they switch servers over, test them, switch the next set, etc. Finally, switch over the login servers. About an hour or two.

    Newcastle looking at Adama Traore.

Always a pleasure to watch last season - beating opponents with such ease only to look completely lost with what to do next.

He's got to be the the definition of a loose cannon - a player who can cause absolute chaos and panic, to the point where he should either score or set up a team-mate, only to come up with some random, unexpected outcome.

I wouldn't have said he was a Benitez player at all. I always thought Rafa liked to keep things predictable.

Adama Traore should make the transition to wing back like all wingers lacking end product have. Valencia uner LvG as well as Moses, Oxlade-Chamberlain last year. Not a fantasy option by any means.

Definitely not. Not yet anyway. But for entertainment value, I love watching him. Has all the tools of a world beater and teams keep gambling on his end product improving. Maybe Rafa can coach it out of him.

For shear skill and beating players he's a great watch, whether it was Boro or Adama that was the problem last year we'll hopefully find out.

Should be used as a penalty / free-kick winner. Put him behind the striker and get him to take long shots and run at the penalty spot to win free-kicks / penalties from fouls

      Needs some end product really!

Ritchie the man to watch for Newcastle I think. Likely 6.0 but on all set pieces... Assisted all 3 of Ciaran Clark's goals last season from corners! 12g 7a is not a bad return... He was on pens too, scoring 4 out of 4 penalties last season, whilst barely missing a game

      Might be my 4th mid!

Not sure there's any equation, I'm just saying, if I paid 8.0 for a striker, what goal output would I expect. I'd probably say I'd be happy with 15.

I worry about the spread of options we'll have. If he's 8.0m, will there be any decent striker options from 6.5 -> 7.5?

Which remaining players prices do we want to see considering they seem to be doing 1 per team?

Some thoughts off the top of my head:

    Liverpool - Milner
Man United - Pogba (Lukaku if transfer is done)
    Man City - Jesus/Aguero
    West Ham - Lanzini
    West Brom - Chadli
Leicester - Iheanacho (if transfer goes through)

Some boring picks there but I'm still interested 🙂

Does anyone know if it is private companies that actually manage / run the fantasy games for PL, Telegraph and Sky (i.e. they have outsourced the development and running of the games)? If so, does anyone know the names of those companies?

I am sure they would keep it well under wraps if they do.

It would kinda make since if they did bring in outside expertise to help them with some things nearly every company does it at some stage after all.

The major games are all outsourced to agencies/third party game companies. Nobody runs their own game to my knowledge.

I used to know all the major ones but, aside from ISM and GFM (who provide Sky and Sun I believe), I'm not sure who the players are now. A few mergers and closures took place.

They usually price the really key mids from the promoted signs at 6.0 if they're on set-pieces.

Indeed - that's key for me - if you are getting a teams best player on set pieces you should be expected to pay a premium. Knockaert, Ritchie and Mooy are those players for the promoted sides.

If Ince is more than Mooy then that is absurd. But will also mean mooy becomes a great cheap 4th mid option.

6m for Ince essentially means his ownership will be 0%

Don't agree on Knockaert - it's far from "absurd". Like I say, Ritchie came up with Borunemouth two years ago and was 6.0, so it's pretty consistent when you're dealing with a set-piece midfielder in a 10+ goals and assists scenario.

Ince could have been 5.5, yeah.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

I still feel Knockaert should have been priced 5.5....6m for a mid from a promoted side feels just too much, but that just may be the case with me. You are right about the set pieces though, but Ritchie didn't have an impressive season when he came from the championship, even though he had good stats that season

Sure, but Ritchie in 2014/15 is comparable to Knockaert in 2016/17 I reckon - 15 goals and 8 assists is more than promising.

Of course, Ritchie fell flat and Knockaert may to. That's the gamble I guess.

In what world is he a starter? He'll be coming back from injury in 2018 as a 33 year old who has played 8 matches in over two and a half years.
Not sure I'd want him starting in place of Ozil, Ramsey and all the rest!

I never said he will be a starter just was pretty sure he was a starter for Arsenal before his injury. I remember considering him from fantasy before his injury.

I can't believe hes still injured when he first got his injury they were saying he will be back in a few days.

I'd let my 3 year old niece start ahead of Ramsey

It's got to be kane and lukaku

Plus one of Sanchez and lacazette

With the likes of pogba sane thrown in.

    United defender. Maybe Cedric

    3 x 4.5 defenders

    2 x 4.5 keepers

    Bob's your uncle.....

I don't think you will be able to afford this.

He can... if the rest of his team is just composed of 4.0 players.

        Probably mate.

But will initially look at kane lukaku one of the arsenal duo and g0 from there. .

Alright but you have around 15 mil left for your last 3 midfielders

Shocked at Benteke and Ince's prices, but to be fair I think others are coming in cheaper, like Fabregas (and arguably, Lacazette)

    Expecting a good balance...

...well, hoping for one anyway 😐

I know..... 6 mil for a Huddersfield midfielder. To think that he has the same price as Shaqiri is beyond me

What's the plan for Rashford? Hyped as the next big thing but there's always a striker bought instead of promoting him...

Which is why he should put in a transfer request IMO. Unless he wants to be the next Danny Welbeck - sit on the bench and take the money.

Mourinho seems to like Rashford more than Martial, so I can see him play on the left wing in a 4-2-3-1. Not the ideal position, though.

I think we will see Marcus utilized a lot from the bench. His pace will give teams big problems in the later stages of a game using the counter attack.

With these high prices, might have to look at Lallana Ramsey and Sane rather than Mane Sanchez and Jesus.

Doubt Lallana will be nailed. Ramsey could be a good pick. Sane is an excellent choice providing Sanchez doesn't move to City.

Is David Horseman related to Bojack Horseman?

Howes (gk); Eleftheriou (c), Rowan, Mukena, Mason; Ryan, Stewart; Pereira, Folivi, Trialist; Jakubiak

"Trialist" is former Palace winger Randell Williams.
