The Community Round Up

The pre-season stepped up a gear this week with the launch of Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football, plus the revelation of a new, additional format being run by the Fantasy Premier League.

Our community writers and hot topic posters were on hand to share their top tips for success in the Fantasy games that are set to launch this summer, as well as for those that have already opened their doors.

Also discussed this week was the potential wealth of striker options next season, advice on getting the most out of the pre-season programme of friendlies and whether the FPL price setters are on form, based on the handful of player valuations already announced.

Over in our Members table section, our resident statisticians have been looking at teams that raced out of the blocks last season, 2016/17’s misfiring strikers and Sky bonus magnets.

We round off with good news from our community’s competitors in the Euro U21 finals.

The Community Articles

The release of the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was among several launches that came under focus from our community writers.

Buffrey was on hand to offer a beginner’s guide to this limited transfer format, while Disable kicked off a Rate My Team discussion with a sneak preview of his initial Sky team selection.

European Cup qualification has piqued the interest of Lone Wolf, who has created his own Fantasy game around the early stages of the Champions League and Europa competitions.

Elsewhere, FPL Dreams elbowed his way into our community article section with his excellent guide to the Fantasy Tour De France game, and Niemi previewed the next set of fixtures in Eliteserien, the Norwegian top flight Fantasy game.

Congratulations to Giggs Boson for scooping the latest community writer of the month prize of a £20 Amazon voucher. His analysis of last season’s clean sheets was the most popular article in June, according to your votes.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

The Fantasy Premier League revealed it is to launch a draft game for the 2017/18 season this week, with FC5750HC the first to let our community know of this exciting addition.

Mark was keen to find out your reaction to the announcement, while Jack Wilshire canvassed the views of those who are familiar with the draft format.

Hot topic poster dorrian123 also discussed the opening of the Sky Sports game this week, with the community given a sneak preview on Monday, two days before the official release.

Whichever format is being considered, nailing the best formation four our line-ups is remains key. Zoumas Bloomers wonders whether this could be the year that a 4-3-3 set up prevails, given the increasing number of striker and full-back options. Lionel’s Messy Boxers went one step further and pondered whether five at the back could reap rewards in 2017/18.

One disappointing aspect of 2016/17 was the poor selection of forward options across the price brackets. But, according to Lateriser12, Fantasy managers could be spoilt for choice in attack next term.

However, such an array of options up top will depend on a range of rumoured striker transfers coming to fruition this summer, which could make the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud and even Manchester United’s forgotten man Wayne Rooney viable options.

Alexandre Lacazette’s move from Lyon to Arsenal is one significant transfer that has already materialised. Bibdh Subedi wonders whether the French striker, who averages almost a goal every two games at club level, will be a success in north London.

Lacazette was also one of a handful of players who had his FPL price tag revealed ahead of next week’s launch. Earlier in the week Mark asked which player prices you are most keen to find out first with Nonprophet particularly keen to find out the value of Liverpool’s wealth of midfield options.

Other announced player prices under discussion were Burnley stopper Tom Heaton’s valuation of 5.0 and Brighton set-piece specialist Anthony Knockaert’s 6.0m price tag. The former’s valuation prompted Net Gains to ask whether spending a total of 8.5 on goalkeepers is a viable strategy.

Fantasy planning is set to take a new twist from this weekend onwards, as Premier League sides begin their pre-season programme of friendlies. We asked for your top tips on getting the best pointers for the season ahead from these matches.

The summer schedule of the three promoted teams will be under scrutiny, particularly as they are set to struggle to maintain top flight status, according to our discussion on Brighton, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town’s prospects next season.

All three do have kind opening schedules on their side. To find out how the other 17 teams usually fare at the start of a campaign, we urge you to read Buffrey’s hot topic, which delves into the history books to see which teams have traditionally enjoyed a flying start.

Finally, to whet our appetite for the campaign ahead FPL Dreams sparked a discussion on our best and worst ever Premier League moments.

To view all our discussions, please visit our our Hot Topics page.

The Members Tables

To mark the launch of Sky Sports Fantasy Football, I’ve created a table looking at the game’s bonus point magnets. I’ve also made this table on baseline bonus points in FPL, after this set of data was added to the Members area this week via Update Three.

Jigger and Pony has added to Buffrey’s opening fixture analysis with a look at the most attacking teams last season over their opening six matches.

Elsewhere, Doosra has been finding out which strikers last season missed the most chances and hit the woodwork rather than the back of the net.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie  for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

The 146 strong Fantasy Football Scout league emerged triumphant in the Euro U21 Fantasy game league of leagues, finishing top and 46 points ahead of Super-Liga Valtovia. Kroksted finished first in the league, with Ryan Seechurn taking second.

Colmans Mustard is still at the top of the community’s league in Eliteserien and in the H2H league FC Smack has taken the lead after Dutch Warriors suffered two defeats in a row.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round-ups, please email us summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spreadsheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

Indeed considering he's probably lost penalties to Defoe as well.

Surprised. Thought the signing of Defoe would keep him a mid. Might get Defoe instead if scrimping.

Josh King spent most of the season playing as an attacking midfielder. Afoebe was the lone striker. Ridiculous decision.

Bournemouth should be very good this season; confortably in the top 10. King might do okay on the bonus front if scoring and they win 2:1 or 3:1.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Let's assume that the Lukaku deal will go through as expected.

Let's also assume that with Manchester United's fixtures, popularity and Lukaku's track record of punishing minnows that he will have a high ownership and price tag.

Given owning Kane, another very popular pick and captaincy candidate, and Lukaku will likely cost between 23-25m is 3-5-2 inevitable unless a strong sub 6m striker emerges?

Or will you shun one of Lukaku or Kane and just by a massive sofa to hide behind?

It has to be Kane-Kaku in GW1, as someone kept iterating...its easier to sell them than buy...
It would hurt more if they haul when not owned, than having them and everybody suffers a blank.

That's looking like the favoured early template. I'd like to include Lacazette as well but with a combined spend in attack of around 35m the midfield and def will be bare.

If Sanchez actually stays at Arsenal the template will be smashed. We just won't be able to have them all.

Pick three of Aguero, Jesus, Kane, Lukaku, Sanchez and Lacazette will be the choice. Picking more than three will really hurt elsewhere.

Unless we find real value in a backline of 4 x £4.5m defenders and one £4m defender.

I will have Lukaku, Kane and Sanchez no matter what.

Could Belotti smash the Lukaku/Kane template? I don't know much about him, but £90m is a lot!

Chelsea will move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti, 23, and will have to pay about £90m to sign the Italy international. (Mirror)

For a start he's second choice to Lukaku for Chelsea so that says to me that - with ManU's fixtures - Lukaku will be the better option.

Also Chelsea have strong midfield options - Haz (when fit) is the star, Pedro offers value.

ManU will have Lukaku as the main man.....and I think Pogba could offer value, but the key will be that Lukaku looks to be the main source of points. Belotti would have to be Drogba in his prime esque for me to consider.

However, if for some reason Kane or Lukaku fail or get injured then sure.

        ....but then there's Lacazette...and Defoe.

...and then we come back to the line 'we can't have them all' again.

Do you agree that FPL is overshooting the prices so far, Jonty?

Do you agree that simple common sense would dictate that King plays as a number 10 next season behind Defoe?

It seems like FPL is getting a lot of decisions wrong so far. How involved is Mark in the decision making process? Can we blame him yet? 😉 😉

            1. - No they are spot on. If anything I feared more for some. Eg Heaton performing like a 5.5 gk last year...but only going up to 5.0. Most would think that was a correct decision...even you I believe yesterday said 5.0 was bang on. They got Fabregas right too I think given his rotation risk.

            2. Number 10s are tricky. rooney was that and was a fwd....the City number 10s and wingers are mids, King was a mid too but was so advanced they've moved him up. I don't think there will be any agreement on the number 10 classification. To be honest either is fine for King I think.

            2. Not sure what they've got wrong so far? That's more a matter of opinion. When they come back with Kane at 14m or Pogba at 10m then I'll agree with that - but I expect them to be 13m and 8.5 respectively which is about right.

Good point - that's exactly the sort of problems around attacking mid/winger classifications. I'd say that given he played most of last season on the wing or tucked in behind a striker that mid is fair - but given his advanced position and brief period as a central striker that fwd would be fair too. That's the tricky thing with those like him and King - they fit both categories.

I could be wrong here, but I have a feeling that Sanchez played more games as a central forward than he did as a winger last season? I feel like he played more games up front than King did at least... But I haven't checked the stats.

Wenger said that he and Sanchez preferred him to be on the wing. That's his main position and I suspect FPL have looked at the latter half of the season as being more indicative of where he will play rather than the first half. Also they have signed Lacazette - who will be the central striker...so that pretty much seals Sanchez fate as a winger, given Ozil is more suited to a central role.

As said there are good arguments for making Sanchez a fwd - sky have - but with Lacazette and the last half of 16.17 in mind there is also a good argument for him being a mid - albeit a mid who is awesome and scores loads.

Yeah I can see both sides too.
What I would say though, is that your Lacazette point can be equally applied to Defoe.

Surely you have to take the hard stats of where Sanchez played the most minutes, over *potentially* empty words about preferred position from his teams manager.

And Josh King played 13/36 up front lol. He played a lot behind Afobe, as a shadow striker.

As said there are arguments for both sides. What I said was that fpl clearly looked at the second half of the season for Sanchez - when he was a mid. They looked at the second half for king too.

But obviously I take the point that if king - with Defoe - is a fwd, why isn't Sanchez.

If I had the final say I'd make both mids for consistency. But I'm relaxed about the classification they have - it's not a biggy for me .

Also we don't know whether or not Sanchez will be a mid yet.

Not bothered whether they're both mids or both fwds, but I'd like them both to be the same, for consistency as you said. Given that we know King is a fwd now though, I suppose that for consistency then Sanchez would need to be too. That was kind of my initial point.

Similar to Alonso and Moses for me - they both need to have the same clasicification IMO, whether that's both defenders or both mids doesn't matter too much.

With the Defoe and Afoebe and Wilson, it's clear King won't play as a forward. He will play where he has played for the vast majority of his Bournemouth career: midfield.

Benteke seems to be 0.5 higher than he should be. Even veterans like TriggerLips agree.

Wilson is a long term injury victim - I'm not sure we'll ever see him regularly nail down a spot as the Bou centre forward. Afoebe and King interchange - often King was more advanced when they played together. But as said there are strong arguments both sides.

for me I think Benteke is 0.5 too high too...but that's only 0.5...if he flops and those getting him in ditch then his price will fall back to 7.5 or so anyway....if as clearly FPL think there will be an upturn in Palace's attacking play with the new manager then 8.0 could be a bargain. If he replicates his Villa form at Palace then 8.5 - 9.0 would be fine. But its a big if. I'm not sure though whether 0.5 is that big a deal for a player like Benteke who people either like or don't. I'm not keen on him from the off after my experiences with him last season so would swerve whatever his price - although a strong pre season may sway me.

WGTA pointed out that Benteke started out at 7.5 and finished on 7.2 so 8 is a bit odd.

I'm pretty confident that if you come back to this hot topic at Christmas, King will have played every game in midfield. Defoe is the clincher.

Rarely have I seen rotation risk being used as an argument to price players way below their value as guaranteed starters.

Fabregas had 3 goals 19 assists in his first season at Chelsea. This season he had 5 goals 15 assists. If I recall correctly he started at 9.0 in his second season. In his third season he started at 7.5. Sure his points tally was worse in his third than his second season, but that's mostly because he didn't play in 9 of the first 13 fixtures. His price should reflect that he's a class player with great FPL potential whenever he is starting, and the rotation risk should give a slight discount. Eriksen is a similar player to Fabregas, just slightly more offensive. If Eriksen ends up at 10.0, then Fabregas is close a 9.0. Add a rotation risk discount, and he should be around 8.0

How are we going to price players like Ramsey, Martial and Mkhitaryan given that Fabregas is a 7.0? Ramsey would have to be a 6.0, Martial a 7.0 and Mkhitaryan a 7.0. Is Walcott also going down in price, despite performing much better this season than the last? It ruins the scale completely that Fabregas got a 7.0.

Rotation has to be a factor - if you don't play as much you can't score as much.

In this case it seems like rotation is used as an argument to push his price lower than players who aren't even playing.

yeah, they should be priced as starters really - if he starts playing every week most people will/should have him, and when that happens it kinda gets boring.

This is it, nail on the head - "price them if they're starters".
If rotation needs to effect price, I'd expect the entire man city squad to be cheaper than they would be without a constant threat of rotation, yeah?

I think we have to consider that Kane at £13m (which people are touting) may mean better value can be found elsewhere.

I know it's a long shot and that sofas would have to be engaged but it's a lot of money. I hope Lukaku comes in at less than 12 but going to United is an issue.

Sorry, late to the party. Jonty's question was "Is 3-5-2 the way to go?"

No. Two up top - yes for sure, but no one has considered this point:

Surely 5.5 and 5.0 defenders are better value than 5/5.5 5th midfielders? For me, I'll be investing in a back 4 to mostly go 442.

The 5.0 defenders are much more of a minefield than the cheap midfielders though. In general there are always great 5.0 defenders, but they're much harder to predict than the best cheap midfielders.

Lukaku should be 11.5 IMO, not sure why he should cost more than Ibra or Kane did last season... Thoughts?

How can we claim that a Liverpool that finished fourth is better than a title winning Leicester? Especially given that when prices were set last year, for Mahrez in particular, they didn't have the benefit of hindsight that we do now. They didn't KNOW that Leicester we're going to decline, all they knew was that Leicester were champions and Mahrez was player of the year.

Nah, there is a big team mentality when it comes to pricing imo...

A poor FPL pick like Fernando at Man City will still be 5.5 or something like that whereas a more attacking player in small team wont be priced high, say Sigurdsson. Have been consistent point producer but havent even been priced more than 7.5 even once...

I didn't say that there's not a big team bias. I said that it can't really be claimed, based on hard stats, that Liverpool 16/17 are better than Leicester 15/16.

Kane won the golden boot in 15/16, and even then only cost 11.0 in 16/17.
Based on that alone, if Kaku comes in at more than 11.5 I'd be shocked, and rather annoyed.

Factor in that Kane has won ANOTHER golden boot since then, and will be playing for a far more potent attacking outfit than Kaku... If they only have a cost difference of 0.5 I'd again be shocked.

I'd say Kane 12.5/13.0, Kaku 11.0/11.5 would be reasonable.

Possibly Joel Ward at 6m if he starts.

Salah is 1-2m cheaper than the other Liv mids.

Heaton at 6.5 looks good. Ryan at 5.8 another strong cheap gk. Less pts lost for conceding this season which favours keepers who make lots of saves at poorer teams.

I would guess the prices are all set in stone. It would be poor form from FPL to adjust a players price on the possibility of a transfer to a team that finished just one place above his current team

        1. nobwak
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 9 months ago

So what you're suggesting is that Kaku's price should be the same, regardless of whether he's at United or Everton?

I wasn't saying that they should adjust the price based on the possibility of the transfer... But adjust it slightly IF he moved before the release of the game next week. Releasing his price now, ahead of release, robs them of that opportunity to recalibrate. So it would be better for them not to release his price until the last possible moment, ie. When the game is released. If the transfer hasn't happened by then, then they have to price him as if he's staying at Everton really.

Howe can develop an average player into a great one. Think of the 2010-11 season in League One. Nobody would have heard of players like Smith, Pugh and Arter, and look where they are now. Premier League football, 9th in the 2016/17 season and every year better than the last. The future looks exciting for Bournemouth fans.

Is it still possible to upload season ticket values without typing them in one by one?

Trying to resurrect an old spreadie that generates values in this format that I used to be able to paste in. You can see from the teams that its a few seasons old 🙂

With FPL releasing 4 prices per day is a Wednesday reveal pretty much confirmed?

I was thinking that myself earlier today. Wednesday seems the most likely day gives them a few days to finalise every thing a few days after to iron any bugs out

Doosra? We need to talk xG, what questions do you have about it?

Well, I don't really know what it is. I looked at those shot maps, and could not see what was being pointed out?

      1. Parm
        • 12 Years
        6 years, 9 months ago

xG models use data from every shot taken in a competition(in this case PL) to find a mean finishing percentage from a shooting position taking into account factors such as dead ball vs open play, header vs feet etc.

The higher a player's xG, the better shooting areas said player is getting into, and therefore the more likely he is to finish off those chances.
If the ratio between xG and actual goals is 1:1 then the player is an average finisher compared to the rest of the league and should hold steady.
If a player is outscoring his xG, like say Harry Kane or Josh King last season, you could attribute that to a player being a better finisher than an average player like Kane or a player being in a purple patch, like King. Given that Kane is the best striker in the league, you'd expect him to continue to out the average PL finisher, whereas King might regress more towards the mean PL finisher.
If a player is scoring below his xG, like Firmino then it suggests the player is a below average finisher, Could they return to the mean next year with improved finishing an is it worth a gamble given that they're in good shooting locations?

Essentially you see two important factors.

        1. xG is a good indicator of a player getting into good shooting locations. More likely to score due to shot location as opposed to actual player quality.

        2. Whether a player is a good finisher or not by his performance relative to xG, where shooting location is less of a factor for a player.

Ah. I am getting an inkling.

But surely, this is a better indicator of good positional play than actual finishing?

Thank you so much, for taking the time to explain this properly - I really appreciate it. 😀

            • 12 Years
            6 years, 9 months ago

The actual model is a good indicator of positional play by essentially putting shooting positions into numerical data.

The comparison of actual results vs model results is a good indicator of finishing with 'top' finishers regularly outscoring their expected goals but these results could regress at any time as the xG is relative.

Not a worry Doos. Once FFS put it into action and hopefully provide the sufficient explanation and analysis to go with it xG will be crystal clear.

Morning all. The most random question...
Is there any way to find the player who scored the least number of points in FPL in past seasons?
I know lots get 0 points but I'm looking for minus points or players who got just 1 point.
