Fantasy Football Scout Leagues Round Up

Sunday’s avalanche of goals provided a thrilling conclusion to the 2017/18 campaign and gives us time to reveal the winners of our Fantasy Football Scout leagues.

Fantasy Football Scout League

Paul Gee claims top spot in our main league in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and also came nail-bitingly close to winning the overall title, finishing in second spot, just eight points behind winner Yusuf Sheikh.

Paul’s strong Gameweek 38 score of 72 points proved enough to snatch the summit in the main league from Bharat Dhody, who scored 48 points and had held the overall lead in FPL for 17 weeks.

Paul did not take any hits ahead of the season finale and instead transferred in and captained Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah for benched Spurs midfielder Dele Alli.

Spurs’ Harry Kane, West Ham’s Marko Arnautovic and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy all provided double-digit points hauls to add to his impressive season finale display.

Ultimately, Burnley’s failure to keep a clean sheet at Turf Moor against Bournemouth robbed Paul of top spot and the FPL crown. He was ranked top with 16 minutes to go on Sunday.

With three further top 5,000 finishes across his previous eight seasons, Paul’s campaign is no fluke.

It’s also worth noting that, over the course of 2017/18, Paul has proved to be a patient manager in the transfer market, taking just 10 hits.

We will have an interview with Paul later this week.

Runner-up Bharat endured a disappointing conclusion to the campaign, with nine of his 15-man squad either failing to earn any pitch time or only making a cameo.

Although he took a hit to bring in Crystal Palace stopper Wayne Hennessey and Salah – captaining the latter for a 24-point net return – this involved moving out Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez, who earned his highest tally of the season (13 points).

Faisal Idris ends the season in third spot in our main league and had a relatively disappointing season finale following his Gameweek 37 heroics – when he was the only top 100 manager to captain that round’s top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Transferring in Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and West Ham keeper Adrian for Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel netted Faisal nine extra points, but it proved too little too late in his push for the league and overall title.

Nebojsa Velijovic’s 77-point return, achieved despite bringing in and captaining Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino in exchange for Vardy, sees him end the campaign in fourth spot in the league and seventh place overall.

Taking fifth spot is Prakhar Patel, who captained Kane for a 24-point return to help him accrue a final day score of 68 points.

Thanks to our successful quintet, the Fantasy Football Scout league finished top of the FPL League of Leagues.

Fantasy Football Scout Members League

Paul Gee also ends the season in first place in our Members league, with a commanding 51-point lead over second placed Tom Foster.

Tom, who finishes in 48th spot overall, made a trio of transfers ahead of Gameweek 38 with all three of his recruits, Arnautovic, Aaron Ramsey and Aubameyang, delivering attacking returns to take his final day score to 79 points. However, Vardy, with his 13 points, was among those to depart.

Anders Lium secured third spot and 52nd place in the overall rankings with a Gameweek 38 score of 84. This was thanks, in part, to Newcastle pair Ayoze Perez and DeAndre Yedlin’s combined score of 19 points coming off his bench, after Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen and Swansea’s Kyle Naughton failed to make an appearance.

Simon Rutherford (aka Heroes and Villains) caps off a stellar campaign with fourth spot in the Members league but will be slightly disappointed with a 55-point final day return, which saw him fall from 26th to 58th in the overall standings. His acquisition of Liverpool pair Salah and Firmino for a hit was cancelled out as Kane, who scored twice, and Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan made way.

In fifth sits Ryan Lysaght, who benefitted from a nine-point return from Swansea’s penalty-saving keeper Lukasz Fabianski. Ryan’s 67-point haul was swelled by Leicester pair Mahrez and Vardy, who together served up 26 points.

Sky Sports Fantasy Football

Congratulations to Jason Barlow, who ends 2017/18 at the top of our Sky Sports league and the overall standings, with a score of 3,402 points.

He finished the final day in style with a 36-point haul from captain Salah, as well as double-digit returns from Arnautovic and Kane.

Second place Pascal Evans also benefitted from the same players and captaincy, as well as 19 points from Liverpool defensive duo Virgil Van Dijk and Loris Karius, but it was not enough to overtake Jason and saw him finish on 3,385 points and as runner up overall.

Mick Barker’s 3,346-point final total, which also saw him captain Salah, sees him finish in third.

Fourth spot is taken by Robert Watson-Lang, who gained 14 points from Mahrez, to add to Salah’s captaincy points and returns from Karius and Kane. He finishes the season on 3,346 points.

Jack Palmer secures fifth spot just behind on 3,345 points, with strong returns from Kane, Arnautovic and his captain Salah.

Similar to FPL, Fantasy Football Scout were ranked first for the League of Leagues.

We’ll be rolling out an interview with Sky Sports winner Jason later in the week as he talks over that successful season.

      1) Now the season is over, will Mark reveal the contents of his Jar of Regrets?

      2) What is your "New Season Resolution"?

      3) Isn't there something fundamentally wrong with the BPS system if it is allergic to Salah, the greatest player FPL has ever seen?

      4) Who has been the FPL Troll of the season? Mark famously said it was Hazard last season.

      5) Is Az the only one worth listening to? 😉

      6) Does FPL need to award an extra point for consecutive goals in a match.

      So a Kane hatrick ....

4 points for the first goal.

5 points for the second goal.

6 points for the third goal.

      7) Would you support the introduction of the Park The Bus chip in FPL next season?

      8) Which players from the promoted teams in the championship should be on our radars for next season?

      9) Funniest moment from the scoutcast this season?

      10) Best Jonty quote of the season?

      11) If you could go back and do it all again, would you play your second wildcard and chips differently?

      12) Which moderator, contributor or member of the community deserves a special shout out on the last episode of the season ... And why?

      12) What's the best thing about FPL? What's the worst thing about FPL?

      13) What do you have planned for FFScout next season? What changes can we look forward to?

I have a very irrelevant question for you guys but I am just curious. After years and years of FPL daily work for you, don’t you get bored? I mean most of us think of FPL as more of a hobby but several members of the scoutcast are either running the great site here or their own podcasts, and can’t afford to take a break any time during the season and I am sure it gets tiring and repetitive. So how do you deal with FPL as a job?

      1. OldBenKenobi
        • 7 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

Nobody gets bored about something they are “passionate” about regardless of what that is 😀

          • 14 Years
          5 years, 11 months ago

Passion will only carry you so far. But trust me, the details of (for instance) writing and editing repetitive articles like scout notes or community roundup etc, has nothing to do with FPL passion.

            Interesting point of view Ragabolly.
I’d like them to answer your question too.
BTW I don’t consider this an irrelevant question at all especially considering the season has wrapped up 🙂

Yeah I only write like one article weekly and then the amount of editing that Mark (and co) does on it is insane! That can’t be fun at all, considering the amount of articles they publish daily.

With FPL going more and more mainstream, and access to stats/hints being easier than ever, do you think the game is harder to so well in or do you think it's just an excuse for more experienced players to use when they do badly?

Obviously new signings and pricing could change this, but who will be the first GK/DEF/MID/FWD you will be looking to put in your teams next season?

Which of the relegated players do you hope will be back in FPL next season? Butland? Fabianski? Shaqiri?

Not one for the Scoutcast but hoping it will get seen:

the most annoying thing in the members area is when you select a table of stats; for the sake of argument, choose Midfielders and Goal Threat, and then select certain players to compare. If you then decide to see another stats table or change the number of gameweeks, the selected players are deselected. why cannot it not retain the selection so i dont have to go back through and reselect all the players.

PLEASE please could you look in to upgrading this functionality for members over the summer?

      thanks

After 4 x top 7k finishes on the spin I thought this game was a piece of you know what, but got truly humbled this year. Would be nice to know what the panel did to get back on track the following year as I guess everyone has a bad un at some stage.

Not a question, more a kind of suggestion, its sth i make and use and can say its pretty helpful. Maybe before 1st GW it would be helpful if a draft guide was made (with the best 100-200 players drafting order list as a suggestion). That would be helpful both in FPL classic (since the players' value will be represented by their position in that list) and in draft leagues. Of course after transfer deadline the list will have to be changed.

Best tactic for jumping 'on' and 'off' bandwagons?

Consider Richarlison - he was 'essential' for a period of time earlier this season because he just kept scoring loads of points. Ditto Josh King last season. How do we make the distinction between the ones to keep for the long haul (e.g. Sterling) vs those to dump (e.g. Richarlison)?

      Chips still need revisiting.
Think the current ones are enough - seen big FH scores, TC can produce big points (especially for those that weren't blinkered by DGWS - thank you Harry GW22)
Shouldn't be allowed in a DGW. - although could reduce BB to same value as AOA.
DGWs big enough already - people hitting 3 figure scores without chips.

In this close season period, is there any chance the BPS system will be seriously looked at? It really is poor how players like Salah seem to be punished disproportionately for trying to make things happen. He wasn't even particularly wasteful on Sunday but was nowhere near BPS despite a goal and assist.

His BPS was ok in this game, problem was that other Liverpool players also performed really well.

Robertson: goal + assist + cs
        Lovren: goal + cs
        Solanke: goal + assist

I wonder what others will do in this situation:

      Final GW
      1 FT
      0.5 ITB
      No chip left
      Catching 7 points

      DDG (will not play)
      Schmeichel (inj)
      Alonso
      Azpilicueta
      Vertonghen
      Lowton
      Chilwell (inj)
      Eriksen
      Sterling
      Willian (50:50)
      Ibe
      Lingard (will not play)
      Kane
      Aubameyang
      J Ayew

      😛

Did Mark fall into the money trap (again) going for Dijk over Robertson?

More generally, is money bias a weakness in Mark's management? I guess this partially could explain the captaincy bias for Kane. If Salah is more expensive next year, could this turn on it's head (being a bit of a devil's advocate here, i know)?

Would you support a change in the rules to allow you to better avoid the issues associated with rotation (which appears to be a bigger issue year on year). Whether this is extending the deadline to 45 mins prior to KO in the first game, permitting changes in the event that one of your players plays only a few minutes/doesn't return (a little like ultimate FPL a few seasons back) or some other system?

      1. FrankieTheGent
        • 9 Years
        5 years, 11 months ago

Yeah why can't the deadline be after team announcements. What's the point in a rule that hand-caps you?
It would dampen down the transfer market madness

There is a big danger that the transfer market madness would go into overdrive during that last 15 minutes, and perhaps the FPL servers might struggle to cope with it.
Even without that, it can be a big problem on the morning of the GW1 deadline.

I really admired how Bharat Dhody played set out to play 4 or 5 at the back for 3/4 of the game. Is there anything you've seen this year from another player you might encorporate into your gameplay ?

What kind of rule changes/ chips will result in more people stamping an individual ethos on their gameplay?

Is it a good idea to allow Free Transfers to roll more - even to a max of 3 will trigger some strategy variation but if you could roll up to 4 or 5 then this will affect how chips need to be managed.

How does one recover from missing the deadline in 37, whcich leads to having the BB played in 38, which then leads to having Ederson's -1 secure that you finish equal on points with your money-league rival, only to loose due to having done one more transfer during the season?

Love the Scoutcast guys, listen every week.

No question of my own, but having read through them all so far these are the ones I'm most interested in:
      - What price do you think Salah will be next season, and how much is "too much" for you to put him in your team?
      - What players do you already envisage being in your team for the opener next season, without knowing fixtures and prices of course.
-What players from promoted teams do you see being decent punts next season?

      Thoughts on different chip strategies?
The template WC32, BB34, FH35 & TC37 was probably not the best option.

Is there a case for saving FH or TC for GW38? With less blanks & double next season (according to Ben Crellin because there will be extra week) this strategy could work out?

I'll be interested to know if you thought you could have used the chips better. I've not done any analysis and I played standard strategy of bringing in the blank GW31 players gradually, then WC'ing in GW32 to get rid of the dross. My rank didn't look like it shifted much around that time but I wonder if I should have kept decent players and then just taken hits for GW31. It's a bit hindsight now but I really could have gotten away with just 3 Liverpool players - and maybe just Mo who I had considered TC'ing in that epic GW for him vs Watford. Apart from King with 5 and Stanislas with 10, I had a bunch of 1s, 2s and 0s even though I was able to field 11. People like Bauer being inexplicably benched didn't help.

Is the best strategy to find mostly good value players (that play every week) and stick with them for the long-haul barring injuries etc?

Personally I think this is my biggest learning of the season as by my calculations an in-budget ghost ship squad (below) could have scored in the top 25 teams (2467pts) using 0 transfers and 0 chips.

      Player Value Points Captain Points
      Pope 4.5 152
      Otamendi 6 156
      Azpilacueta 6.5 175
      Alonso 7 143
      Salah-C 9 303 303
      De Bruyne 10 209
      Mahrez 8.5 195
      Sterling-VC 8 229 13
      Gross 5.5 164
      Firmino 8.5 183
      Vardy 8.5 181
      Bench AutoSub Points
      Elliot 4 11
      Davies 5.5 40
      Quaner 4.5 10
      Long 4 0
      Total 2467

Also, feel free to check my maths and can anyone form a better scoring ghost ship squad?

Who do you think is a certainty for your GW1 teams next season?

I think if Gross is 7m or less and the fixtures are semi-decent then he’s a shoo-in for me.

Will you be avoiding players that have progressed to the latter stages of the World Cup due to the risk of rotation?

I’ve probably missed the cut off for this to be talked about, but I posted this last night on the ideas for chips thread (along with several others), but I feel pretty strongly about this one. I’m sick of being rewarded for lucky autosubs.

5 point bonus if everyone in your starting 11 plays at least 1 minute of the game.

Everyone's been in the situation where, let's say you've started Lingard, and he's been benched. You're hoping he doesn't come on for a 5 minute cameo because you have Mee, with a clean sheet, as first sub.

It doesn't seem right to me that you're being punished for a player you picked in your 11 to make an appearance in the match and get 1 sole point, whereas if he doesn't play at all, you may be rewarded for benching a player that's done well.

This will also encourage transfer activity which increases engagement.

A few blanks this gameweek? Taking a hit or two to field a full 11 is likely a decent strategy.

Phil Jones doubtful? Transfer him out, rather than stick him in your 11 even though he probably won't play, and collect your auto-sub's points. Starting a doubtful player because 'if he starts, he'll collect a clean sheet, and if he's out, I don't really care because my first sub will just replace him' is a cheap tactic. One that I use, definitely, but I'd much rather be rewarded for choosing a player that actually starts.

Won 1/1 previous season and 2/2 that one — not satisfied much.

However, a rival of mine finished 96.5K and wanted to win a H2H league badly, so he could’ve been able to say: “Didn’t have a very good season, but won a H2H league!”.

In conclusion, seems like managers who don’t have a good overall season become happy if they win any H2H league.

My opinion’s that the classic leagues are better.

We have a cash H2H league as it helps to keep those who aren't 100% committed to weekly changes interested (and therefore part with their cash at the start of the season).

Was ruined a touch by one guy realising earlyish on (GW10 or so) that he wasn't on for a great season. From there, he just took big hits every third week or so to ensure that he won 2/3 of his H2H fixtures in order to make the playoffs and went into the playoffs on the back of a WC with FH, TC and BB intact. Needless to say he's now the proud owner of a trophy and the first cash prize

Since every week everyone tries to get the maximum points, classic leagues are the better ones without question. H2H include much more luck (like the cup) so can see the fun but when it comes to FPL we try to minimize luck.

I participate a league with 30-40 teams and I always lose to dead teams, who happen to have captained an injured player with vice captain someone like Walters who happens to score twice in this game. There is however the thrill of having one opponent, so check his transfers, guess his captain etc. So worth participating but wouldnt mind if i didnt.

    @Berbinho's Forehead

About your post earlier, the position United miss is a LB and a RB. You can't have Valencia and Young if you want to challenge for the title. A RW is also needed with Sanchez playing LW.

Imo the they lack the most creativity upfront. The have shown this season that they can beat top teams, but they often have problems with worse sides that sit deep.

Sad if true if anything his experience at world competitions would be more valuable in the squad than letting a group of inexperienced keepers try and fight for a place between them

However, Belgium look to be not too far behind them with Hazard, Kaku, Mertens...

Scored 2,341 pts to go 4,457th overall but missed opportunity to get in top 2,000.

Tced Jesus and still amazed he didn't do anything in gw37. Use of freehit chip in gw22 cost me in gw23, as I no longer had Arnie or Son and they went mad, then in gw35 when owners of Lacazette et al got 20-30 more.

So next season I will keep my chips until the dbgws unless something really unusual happens like bad weather postponements. With no freehit chip it was like having the handbrake on in gw34 picking 3 Burnley players, although they did ok in gw35-36.

FH aside, what are the other chips really worth?

A 20 point BB or TC - which would be considered pretty good - is what, 1% of your overall points total?

Is that worth all the planning and rotation induced stress?

Probably not, I will give strong consideration to using TC and BB in SGWs.

I love their chat and they seem like such nice guys.

Fmlfpl makes me laugh the most, especially during their dark times.

Fantasy football surgery has really good quality advice imo

I've only listened to it a couple of times, but I really like that podcast.

What I hate, is the whole stigma that Brits have against Americans liking soccer.

As a Brit, I really don't understand why an American's opinion isn't valuable because of their nationality.

I've been to a couple of MLS games as well as a Man Utd vs Roma pre-season friendly out in Denver a couple years ago and had a great time. The atmosphere was much friendlier than the Premier League, you could drink in the stands, the chants were fun but not aggressive, and I met some cool people.

Always Cheating is probably the most fun and entertaining podcast for me.

FFScout provides the highest quality advice, closely followed by FF Surgery.

I'm annoyed that NyomWatch won best feature. The first 2 watches were amusing. Once you hear his stats for 38+ times, it begins to grate. Plus it kind of ridicules the poor chap as a professional footballer.

      That's 2 minutes I'm never getting back.
The twitter account has 65 followers and draws with crayon.

      #Nyomwatch !?!? * ? Oh dear

      Always cheating overlooked for quality.
The Gaffer Tapes for just pure madness.

Oh dear, this is a bit cringeworthy - some guy with a Twitter account and 60 something followers!? Is there even a ceremony?

These are the recognised podcast awards by the way. There's even a fantasy football category!

Official WC 2014 Fantasy started 30 days before the start of the tournament, on Tuesday. (equivalent of today)

If there will be an official one this year I think we can expect it sooner rather than later.
