The impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has had on Southampton’s FPL assets

Southampton are one of the most overlooked teams in Fantasy Premier League as Gameweek 1 draws ever nearer.

Only one of the Saints’ FPL assets is owned by more than 2.5% of managers: Shane Long (£5.0m), who, barring injuries, is expected to be among the substitutes when Southampton run out at Turf Moor this Saturday.

While the south coast club’s fixtures are a horror show between Gameweeks 7 and 13 (all of the sides they face in this period finished in the top nine last season), there are some more appealing encounters with Burnley, Brighton, Sheffield United and Bournemouth in the first half-dozen Gameweeks.

Pre-season results are not always a reliable barometer but the Saints are unbeaten in five matches this summer, winning four of them.

New signing Che Adams (£6.0m) has arguably been the stand-out performer, with three goals and two assists.

Is there anything to encourage Fantasy investment in the first six Gameweeks, then?

In this latest Numbers Game article, we take a slightly different approach to the series template and instead focus on the impact Ralph Hasenhuttl has made on Southampton following his appointment in December 2018.

Are there any nailed 4.0 goalkeepers? I got Button atm but the 'Team News'-page got Ryan as starter. Need someone to rotate with Pope.

No. You don't "Need" a rotating keeper, it's a luxury, just pick a 4.5 and hope he's the best of the bunch.

      Think Barkley could do well.

3 of your defenders are rotation risks which would concern me.

Personally I think spreading the cash more means you can get less risky players than the likes of Zinc KWP Lundstrom and Dendoncker, and more points from upgrades on such as King and Barkley. Plus, isn't double Liverpool defence putting all your eggs in one basket? But it's your team. Good luck with it

Usually Id say no but this is a tough one as many are picking Vardy as their premium striker whereas I think Kane is the one to get.

    0.5m in the bank:

    Heaton
    TAA | VVD | Zinchenko | Coleman
    Salah | Sterling | Fraser | Perez
    Wilson | Kean

    McGovern | Dendoncker | Lundstram | Greenwood

My one starting punt is Kean, may not start the first game but with Evertons lack of goals in pre-season and their great fixtures it's one I'm going with.

Would rather Rico than Lundstram backup to Kean for that opening fixture but not sure he'll play.

Perez hopefully OOP and Fraser + Wilson double up for their great opening two at least, hope they can repeat last years returns!

Thought about using the 0.5m to upgrade VVD to Robertson but think their returns could be similar and have a feeling that 0.5m will come in handy after the opening few rounds of fixtures.

      Hey... Juve fan here
Not only is Kean too early, I think he’s overpriced too. Maybe go for Wood as a place holder?

Thanks for the feedback. You're probably right.

I did a switch around from Richarlison & Deulofeu > Fraser & Kean. Liked the option of double bournmouth attack but didn't really want to lose Everton attacking cover.

I guess with my previous comment of Everton struggling to score in preseason it may not be the worst idea to avoid, even with their great run of fixtures.

Otamendi is 5.5 and has the chance to regain his place in the starting lineup after being left out last season. If City don't sign any defender, he can be a very good option. Stones will always be around but I can see Otamendi claiming his place back this season, and given how good he can be in attack (remember 17/18 season?) might as well punt with him early on. It's a risk nonetheless but an option to monitor.

Doubt it. He's behind Laporte, Stones and even Fernandinho might be starting some games at CB.

`This is me, only doubts are which 7.0 Pool defender and which 6.5 forward:

    Pope
    TAA VVD Digne Rico
    Salah Sterling Perez Barkley
    Aubameyang Wood

    McGovern Guilbert Dendocker Greenwood

Wood may become Jota if the latter is excused the long away trip. Any other thoughts appreciated.

Looks good! Kinda same as my team only I have Trossard, king and Kane instead of Barkley, auba and Wood.

Barlkey -> McGinn and Wood -> £6.0m would allow you to upgrade Perez to Fraser. Or also "downgrade" Digne to Coleman to upgrade Wood to Wilson

Aguero always seems to be one of the most consistent FPL players each year I play.

Is there any reason that most are choosing Kane/Auba instead? What's your reasoning behind this?

Man City have the best team in the PL and are most likely going to outscore and win more games than any other club (Liverpool might come close)

      Sterling a better choice.
Then I’d you want to play LFC’s amazing opening fixtures, you don’t really have the funds for Kun. Kane/Auba is pushing it but I’m not sure you could really squeeze another 1m out of the rest of the team.
