Scoutcast Episode 342 – End of season review

The Scoutcast trio of Joe, Andy and Az are back for one more time this season to assess the highs, the lows and lessons they should probably learn.

This episode is dominated by the community’s questions on a raft of topics from deadlines to reclassifications.

With a chaotic final Gameweek deadline for many, the Scoutcasters start off with tackling the difficulties around timing a deadline right in a global game, where not everyone is awake to make last minute moves. It is an issue which is further complicated in the 24-hour worldwide social media news culture that has emerged in recent years.

The proliferation of Fantasy Premier League manager numbers is also pondered. Is a high finish trickier than ever with so many engaged players enjoying the game?

Lessons learned features prominently. What pivotal moments in the season made them think differently about how they play the game? For Joe the importance of Double Gameweeks being married up with chips is a particular issue that will influence him next season.

Players to target next season also takes up a large part of this mammoth hour and a half episode. This discussion takes in reclassification of players like Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, those that are certain of a price hike as well as the potential low priced gems to target.

The five-substitute rule and the potential for an early Blank Gameweek, and possibly a Double too, are other additions to their chat.

They also assess how their traditionally goal strewn Gameweek 38 went and finish the show with some powerful words from Shirtless about family and FPL.

The Scoutcast will return along with a host of other video and podcast content for the next campaign. In 2020/21 Joe will be joined by Az as a regular co-host, with a different guest each week to help them make sense of each Gameweek’s inevitable twists and turns.

Any mods here? When does the membership price jump from 17.50 to the full price? Site says August. Is that August 1st? Or later in August?

I'm not sure I understand you. Or maybe I didn't make myself clear. I want to know when the current 'offer' pre-season price of 17.50 goes up to the 'normal' price.

'that price will remain into August.' - chance they don't know yet, probably coincide with FPL reopening somehow

I emailed the FPL and suggested that their secondary game could be one that used BAPS as the scoring system. Told them that they could use a different background or teams' second kits to avoid any unfortunate transfers when playing between the two games. Would mean a different price structure with some previously unconsidered players suddenly becoming near prize assets. Just about everything that happened throughout the 90 minutes of a match would suddenly become interesting without detracting from the thrill of a goal, assist or cleanie. Surely more fun than the auction game or the squad based one before that?

About 6-7 years ago I used to play fantasy football from the metro.

Their points scoring system was based around this and it was good fun to be honest.

Santi Cazorla was always the go to captain every game!

Santi Cazorla. Seem to remember him getting four assists on a Monday night near the end of the season to clinch my works league!

I delve into the Paddy Power fantasy game (with limited success) but it's still interesting nonetheless and it's very stats based. That's how I think there might be a niche for it in these days when OPTA is so prevalent.

All the good bits? As far as I recall, there are no price rises, no chips, limited transfers, no captains, no bench.

Part of me wishes that you had to pay a pound to enter or something like that to facilitate better prizes, but what with gambling laws and such, folks from outside the UK would be frozen out, so that wouldn’t really work.

I don’t play the Sky game which I know folks like D1sable really like. But imo, FPL is easily the best game out there.

Does anyone recall the Yahoo game they killed like 5 years ago? Points for lots of stuff, no captains, no bench (I think) and free transfers.

But the main factor was player prices and your budget. Players shifted A LOT in price if they had good games, but if you'd bought Harry Kane when he broke through for 7 you kept him for that amount as long as you didn't sell. It was great fun deciding which players to keep and which players to sell each week.

Yahoo complemented FPL in a great way!

Bingo. 2 clean sheets in 15 weeks. Absolutely insane it's actually been really interesting going back to the earlier weeks. Of course Adrian played for a lot of these matches but this may be the reason we get TAA at 7.5, because Liverpool's CS dropped so much compared to the season before, however next season with hopefully no Allison injury if the clean sheets return to the 18/19 season TAA will be insane value

Baines and Vidic were valued as high as 8.0 back in the day. Wouldn't be that shocking if Trent was valued at least that highly.

      It's a funny old game.

I berate myself for not owning TAA for long periods, but 7.5+ for a defender who nearly went halfway through the season with two clean sheets means there was some ration and logic behind it.

11-12 Baines and Vidic were 8. Cole and Terry were both 7.5

Reading FPL lessons on the scout and what are the chances of Auba's reclassification into a mid? Casuals will win one more time. Rashford, Auba and the likes need to stay as FWDs

It would be mental if he is a midfielder. You can see the reason Salah and mane are midfielders as they are natural wingers. Rashford and Aubameyang aren't. Milner was playing a left-back for a year or so so it was understandable he would be a defender for a while.

Martial should be a forward, yes. I can see the logic of rashford as a midfielder if it's a swap for those players. But Aubameyang, no. I think they should base it on the team sheets at the start of the season. If lacazette leaves auba should remain a forward.

What's ur logic when u say you can see they are wingers but Rashford and Aubameyang aren't? You can quite clearly see Rashford and Aubameyang were playing as wingers too. Is it just because they've played as strikers before?

It’s a weird thing that probably isn’t logic-based. Reclassification is rare, besides for egregious errors such as Martial, and players seem to adopt an set ‘FPL position’ as the need for attacking mids/defs who could easily be forwards/mids makes the game more fun and real positons can’t be accounted for without over-complicating it.

I think they should assess how the teams are likely to line up next season. If Aubameyang is likely to play on the wing again, which I'm not sure he will, maybe list him as a midfielder. But we all no he is a forward. It's hard!

It’s extremely difficult. The lines are blurred so much with inside forward/attackers.

Sterling, Salah, Mané, Auba, Martial Rashford etc

I imagine they’ll just put Martial as a forward as the only change.

Here's my idea. Feel free to hate it:

Remove classifications and allow people to have 13 outfield players from any position!

Introduce badges for fantasy players: D + A (defence and attack). Assign to players based on their (expected) responsibility.
      _________

Players get the following based on their badges:

      DD: defensive points x3
      D: defensive points x2
      A: attacking points x2
      AA: Attacking points x3
      _________

      Potential defensive points include:
      CS = 2 points
CS (30-60 mins) = 1 point (especially relevant if there are 5 subs)

      Potential attacking points include:
Assist: 1 point (including winning your own penalty!)
      Penalty goal: 1 point
      Goal: 2 points
      _________

      Examples:
      - Van Dijk (DD)
      1 Goal: 2pt
      1 Assist: 1pt
      1 CS: 6pts

      - Wan Bissaka (DA)
      1 Goal: 4pts
      1 Assist: 2pts
      1 CS: 4pts

      - Trent (DAA)
      1 Goal: 4pts
      1 Assist: 2pts
      1 CS: 4pts

      - Xhaka (D)
      1 Goal: 2pts
      1 Assist: 1pts
      1 CS: 4pts

      - Ceballos (AA)*
      1 Goal: 6pts
      1 Assist: 4pts
      1 CS: 2pts
      _________

Most players would just have 1 or 2 badges, but this system allows for easier treatment of special cases (are they a defender or an attacker?), and removes the false distinction between wide forward (midfielder) and forward (striker).

Obviously this would completely change the pricing, with Trent being one of the more expensive in the game, and perhaps rightfully so, given his contribution and responsibilities?

Also, remove reward for these attacking and defensive actions from the bonus system.
      _________

Potential iteration on these rules as follows:

Players are not players, but cards that represent the players. FPL can modify the players price and badges during the season (e.g. once, halfway through (or more often)), according to how the season is developing.

*Let's say, Ceballos has moved from a number 10 role (AA) to more of a holding distributor or box-to-box player, FPL can change his badges to DA, and based on his and Arsenal's underwhelming form, restart pricing for him at 5.0. Likewise, Greenwood could be reintroduced on a new card with a higher price.

FPL managers keep the cards they have and are free to do what they wish with them. When a new card for that player comes along, their current card for that player freezes in price. They cannot buy the new card for that player (until their current card is sold).
      _________

The points here are just an example of how it could work. You could work the bonus points into this system so it's not separate. I like how it rewards each member of the team for contributing to a clean sheet.

Fair enough. I don't like the restriction of the current game. If I want 6 Arsenal defenders, I should be allowed to die on that hill! But I also don't want to be playing multiple FPL games. I can see that I'm just playing the wrong game, but I'd get serious FOMO if I switched to a less popular game! 😀

The simple suggestion - 15 players no restrictions on positions - yeh, why not? By the same token, why not take out the restriction on 3 players per club? Just pick a squad of 15 players from anywhere. Obviously, with pricing you can't fill your squad with Liverpool first team or 11 premium strikers. I think it would be a good and challenging game. There would need to be some tweaking to points allocated to ensure balance but I won't go into that as it's a non-starter in practice.

Prices will be so tough next season, I worked this out which I think is about right:
    Pope(5.5)
    TAA(7.5) - Aurier(5.5) - Tierney(5.5) - Boly/Saiss(5.0)
    KDB(12.0) - Salah(12.5) - Puli(9.0) - Bruno(9.5)
    Jimi(9.0)
    (4.0, 4.0,4.5,4.5)

That totals 98, thats 4 at the back, and I still need 1 more starting player...

Not when you need to build team value

Salah has historically started slow, KDB on the other hand

Flexibility in the early stages is key, you need to be able to move for those who offer the most value and will add value to your team

Plus as is always the case - fixtures, if city have a fantastic early run then you’ll want 2
          City attack.

You need a captain tho, at least one of those two is required. Maybe yea just go with 1 and perma cap, or share cap with Bruno or something.

A lot of those prices are well off imo. Reckon you've underpriced the team by at least 1.5m

      TAA > 8m+
      Wolves defs > 5.5m+
      Bruno > 10m+
      Jimi > 10m+

Bruno 10 Max, still think 9/9.5 tho, similar with Puli, Puli 0.5/1.0 cheaper then Bruno

I don't think they'll just make loads of players really expensive, it'll be balanced. Jimi scored 194pts this season, 181pts last season. That extra 13pts shouldn't dictate a price rise from 7.5 to anywhere near 10. Personally I think the forwards will be kindly priced as they were a tough valuebsell compared to Mids as this year transpired.

    5. pingissimus

Suspect your pricing is optimistic there

Don’t think that 4 premium - or slightly sub premium - mids is going to be possible if you want 4 non base defenders and a genuine forward option.

This time last year all the talk was of 2 cheapies up top and big at the back.

In the first 15 weeks, how many hauls did Salah and Sterling get between them (counting anything 10 points and above as a haul) so 30 matches to choose from

Sterling had a good start to the season but not sure he hauled often after the first week. Salah was regularly disappointing and often just scored one. I'm gonna go with 2 again. Sterling v west ham and Salah v arsenal.

Good dissection of the season and how difficult this game is.

Salah and Sterling and Pool defenders were actually red herrings up until a significant chunk into the season.

Yet, they remained template, City still scored bus lods of goals and Liverpool were still formidable. It just didn't quite translate to FPL points.

It's simple, at least in theory, you captain who you think will score the most. The captain you think is obvious isn't for all players on here.

Take the final GW for example, I thought KDB chasing the assist record and playing against bottom of the table Norwich and City scoring highly since the restart was obvious but he wasn't in top 4 in the captain poll.

Most thought Sterling was the better option, as did I. Infact I did KDB>Sterling.
I still dont think it was a terrible or bad decision, thats just how it went, on a different day Sterling got a hatti and KDB got 1 assist.
Sterling having a mini holiday was probably a warning sign tho, I bet you KDB didnt go on holiday..

        1. Zilla
          • 2 Years
          12 days, 23 hours ago

Yeah Sterling wasn't a bad option by any means that's not what I am trying to imply at all. I was saying that if you looked on the captain poll your opinion may be swayed.

On another day it might have been different that's true too and the poll was going to be right but sometime you have to go with your gut.

It’s about your mental strength and conviction.

You make your choice and then right or wrong you need to take ownership.

If you post something different here, most will slate you and tell you to buy the players they own and become more template.

I just listened to the scoutcast about the deadline and I found it very arrogant to say "This is the English PL, if you really cared, you would wake up at 3am". It's easy to say that knowing you don't have to do it, but as an Englishman living in the USA, waking up at 4am to get the same edge, not based on skill, just information based on convenient of timezones is not skill.

The skills is the statistics and watching the game, not by getting on twitter and reading early team news, the playing field should be kept even by bringing the deadline a few more hours.

I agree they should move the deadline just so it stops twitter leaks being so important to the game.

But they have a point, if you’re that obsessed by a free fantasy football game that you’d interrupt your life for it during the day, it’s not too far of a stretch that you’d wake up for 2 mins in the middle of the night.

I wouldn't change it. It would make it too much of a focus when really it doesn't matter that much. Yes, teams rotate sometimes but most of the time the best players play, because they're the best players. You got to take the rough with the smooth, like in all aspects of life.

I was obsessed in England getting early team news, I am still obsessed with the game but lose the love a little because I don't have the same time advantage as other do, it's not a level playing field regardless of skill.

It's not skill logging onto twitter and getting the team news, the skill is planning, anticipation and statistical analysis. I'm not a 16 year old who can set an alarm at 4am to quickly change their team, play a bit of Fifa and go back to sleep at 4pm.

The amount of time I've also been caught out by a Friday deadline because a work call overrun killed my rank.

I don't expect it to change, my grudge was the FFS guys playing the "We are England" card and that the PL is THEIR game and everyone else should deal with it.

Yeah that attitude seems to be quite prevalent in the UK now, I’m honestly glad I left and now have perspective on how the UK is viewed through foreign eyes.

I’d move the deadline just to remove the twitter leak aspect of the game, but it is a UK game and the deadline would always have to be in the middle of the night somewhere!

But practically, moving the deadline forward would solve the problem at a stroke. Generally, managers don't finalise their team sheets until close to kickoff so any leaks would be unreliable by definition. There's really no downside to such a change that I can see.

I raised the same couple of days ago.. deadline has to be moved 2 hrs prior to 1st kick-off. It gives unfair advantage..

It's 12pm here and we are in best timezone for the leaks as deadlines are mostly in our evenings.

There are appears to be a very strong consensus on FFS that the deadline should be moved. I don't know if FPL Towers listens or if they're getting the same message delivered strongly from other sources. Frankly, I'll be surprised if they do nothing.

Been a Pool supporter since 1991.

McManaman one of the best dribblers of the ball I have seen. He scored many worldies.

Those Pool vs Magpies 4-3's were some of my favourite matches.

And finally first time since supporting LFC, Holy grail. My sister married a scouser and is how I was introduced to English football and the best team in England 🙂

My sister got devorced lol. I do still catch up with him every now and then on facebook though.

Season was ruined by lockdowns tbf. I actually stopped watching the matches. The fake fan noise was the pits so fake just couldn't be bothered. Kept tabs of scores on here and on FPL.

          Haha, not far wrong 😉

Jokes aside, it's hard to pick favourite fighters. Some of the most impressive boxers to me are based purely on resume as theres no footage or very little. Roy Jones and Marvin Hagler spring to mind but theres so many. In MMA DC, Fedor, Ubereem.

Lomachenko is my favourite boxer, but by extension it would almost certainly be Roy Jones had I been older and seen him in his prime. With regards to MMA, you're like the opposite of me haha. Above I declared my love for the 125ers and here you are with the heavyweights! Got DC against Stipe this time around?

Arguably the most quotable film of all time! Highly recommended 🙂

I could watch that goal again and again. I'm an Oxford fan but West Ham have always been my second team, dunno why, so this one is slightly more special. That technique... it looked like he did it in slow motion, in fact the only way I would be able to hit the ball let alone score would be if I could slow down time to about a quarter!

If you could change one chip which one would you get rid of? I don't like bench boost. We all want to pick the best 11s possible and benches often feature cheap boys who might not even play. I really like the attack! attack! chip in eliteserien where all your strikers get double points in lieu of captaincy. More fun.

Vice captain, although not a chip per say is absolute nonsense. We should live and die by our captain pick and selecting a rotation prone/injury doubt player as captain shouldn't have a cheap ass get out clause

Triple captain for sure. Don't like it. Adds huge variance and is so basic and blunt.

Would rather have a maximum captain chip instead or something a bit more nuanced like Defense boost to reward managers with well rounded squads.

I disagree very much on BB being a bad chip. I think it rewards smart managers who build solid squads and incentivizes them to pick more cheap and lesser owned players.

All of them, including captain! Allow FTs to accumulate, maybe with a WCs or 2, or mini WCs of 5 extra transfers, or just set a limit like in Sky, like 50 transfers to account for the lost WCs.

          Sure, why not? 😀

For example, I would've used it for City vs. Norwich in GW38. I would've picked Ederson and as many defenders as I could guess right, as well as Sterling, Mahrez, KDB, Silva and Jesus.

The most lucrative way of using it would've been of course Leicester's 9-0 drubbing of Southampton. And there would've been countless occasions where using it would've been underwhelming or just downright bad.

    Let's talk about TAA.

People here are saying he's gonna be priced at 7.5m. I think it's an absurd price. They cite things like the fact he scored fewer points than Robertson last season, that he's a defender and that's the structure...

But they're also neglecting the fact that Liverpool kept only 2 clean sheets in their first 15 games and he STILL managed to score over 200 points as a defender. From GW17 until Liverpool won the league in GW31, he scored 119 points. That's higher than any other PLAYER in the entire league regardless of position for an average PPG of 7.93.

    Salah got 109
    KdB scored 104

It's absolutely bonkers form for a defender and he rightfully shot up to 7.8m from 7.0m starting and had over 50% ownership at that level.

He absolutely should be at the very minimum 8.0m. He's straight in my team at that price no questions asked. 8.5m would be a better price for balance (Robertson at 7.0 or 7.5m). 9.0m wouldn't even be too high imo for what he offers. The 7.0 from last season was because of his potential uncertainty of starts. That has been categorically erased as a concern this season and I think his price should be raised to match. 8.5m would be the best price point for him imo and provide some genuine dilemmas for managers who could get VvD at 7.0m or Robbo at similar or 7.5m.

I agree but I don't think I would be absolutely definitely picking him at that price. I really don't think any single player is essential. It's about owning the right players at the right time. Saying that, only TAA and Pope stayed in my team all season.

I'm absolutely, definitely, picking him up if he's 8.0m or less I'll tell you that right now. The question will not be whether I get him or Robbo/VvD it will be whether I double up or not.

Won't be 7.5 as I think everyone would pick him at that price and that's exactly what they try to avoid. Plus he ended at 7.7 this season anyway. My guess is 8.0, and I may not pick him at that price.

But he's a defender who assists regularly. There is precadecnt for him to be at least 8.0 next season.

        1. Greek Freak

8.0 I would accept, although I'm one of those people who thinks 7.5 is the right price. Why? Because in 19/20 he started at 7.0 after having scored 185 points in 2460 minutes. Now he's scored 210 points in 3173 minutes (which is actually a worse ratio of points per minute btw), so a hike to 7.5 seems realistic to me.

I have, however, seen convincing arguments that he should be 8.0 so I wouldn't have a problem with that. But 8.5 or 9.0 is just crazy.

He did have Adrian in goal though for many weeks. Alisson came back and cleanies started.

Ederson only 3 more cleanies than Alisson who was out for 9 matches.

            1. Greek Freak

Sure, if Alisson had played more games, TAA would've had more points. But he didn't - I don't think the prices should be about what could have happened, they should be about what did happen.

              1. FOO FIGHTER
                12 days, 21 hours ago

Ueah I agree. Just pointing out that cleanies will be more wih Alisson in goal full time.

                Trent is a beast irrespective.

It's a bit like KDB being a bargain at 9.5 in the beginning of the season. Now, everyone knew he's a beast, but the price reflected what happened the season before (i.e. that he had played little due to injury), not what could've happened had he not got injured. This is an extreme example, but just as a comparison.

I don't think it should be about what could have happened or even what did happen. It should be about what is about to happen.

TAA over two seasons has clearly demonstrated incredible attacking potential for a defender. His price should reflect his predicted points. Next season, he's set to have an even better year with Alisson in goal from the off and more clean sheets than the 15 they ended up getting.

Nobody knows what is about to happen. Maybe TAA will have injury niggles that slow his production down in the next season - who knows? What we do know is how he performed in the past season, which is what the price should reflect.

He got 4 goals and 15 assists this season. That’s more goal involvements than Richarlison, Willian and Grealish.

No chance he is as cheap as 7.5. I would like to see him priced at 8.5-9.0 purely to make it a tough decision to own him or not.

7.5 or 8 because they need the gap down to dijk and robbo to be close otherwise everyone will pick robbo. Robbo at 7 seems fair so 7.5 or 8 seems likely.

Why are we capping these monstrous defenders at 7.0m? Would it be so absurd to have Robbo at 8m and Trent at 9m?

For the consistency of points they offer relative to mids and forwards, that's really their true value as a percentage of the squad. And even then, 8m for close to 200 points guaranteed next season in TAA is a bargain compared to the returns we'd expect from a similarly priced forward.

    Technical question about xG:

I’m diving into xG On Target data from this past season and want to know if there are any obvious situations that create noise in it. For example, penalties create noise in expected goal numbers because the xG for a penalty is so high. Are there similar caveats for xG On Target?

TM, you are vastly more knowledgeable about all things Fantasy Football than I, but I can't see TAA being 8 next season.
He was tied with Vardy for 4th-highest scorer this year - surely he'll be 8.5 or 9.
Doherty will be 7 at least, and Jimenez was 4th-highest FWD - he'll be 9 or more.
KdB and Salah will be 12.5 or more, and Werner will be 10.

I was being nice with half those numbers 🙂
          Bruno shouldn't be 10 either.
Value is in defence so TAA will get protected somewhat, someone in the top 10 didn't have TAA all season so he's far from essential on those grounds.

The Sheffield defence had better value for money.
They were great at home so if you could find a decent team to rotate with, you could have done fine.

Brentford only needed a point and they've gone and lost 3 in a row. They seem crushed. It probably will be Fulham v Swansea in the final but I would like to see Brentford as first-timers in the big boys' league.

The team that wins the first leg usually has enough momentum to hold on - and Brentford's form has fallen off a cliff.

What do we think Alonso’s price will be next season and what do we think are the chances of more starts/minutes? Was there something driving the reduction this year (other than rotation/benching) that gives us hope of more game time?

I think his time as a first-team regular at Chelsea is over. What would be super-interesting is if Chelsea get Chilwell after the season starts and Alonso moves to a lesser PL team and is first choice. Then he'd be a bargain because if he's priced as a Chelsea player I suspect he'll only be 5m.

The thought of him moving hadn’t crossed my mind. As you say, I think it’s his only chance of increased minutes. I’ll vainly hope for that.

He's getting older and slower. I'd predict that he will play fewer matches and see less match time. One for the great memories, I'm afraid.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. Despite looking below his old standards, from an FPL point of view he still got close to 80% of Azpilicueta’s points in something like 45% of the minutes. Was an absolute beast In 16/17!

Are Leicester defensively going to be options again or has the Rodgers effect ruled them out!
