How Aubameyang compares to other FPL midfielders after positional change

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12.0m) will be a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League next season following the game’s relaunch.

The move comes about following Aubameyang’s half-season spell on the left flank, with Mikel Arteta’s appointment as Arsenal manager in December signalling a change of role for the Gabon international in the Gunners’ attack.

The reclassification further swells the premium options available to us in the middle of the park, with Marcus Rashford (£9.5m) also making the move to ‘FPL midfielder’ and Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) rising considerably in price.

How does Aubameyang compare with the other heavy hitters after his positional switch, then?

Our Members article below delves into the data.

What's the story with branthwaite at Everton? Was he only in the team due to injuries at the end of last season?

      Yes.

Was starting at CB because Holgate was injured. With Holgate and Mina back he's nowhere near the first team. Closest 4.0 starter is Johnson.

        Why are we ignoring Mitchell?

He hasn’t played a minute since January and Hodgson doesn’t usually play youngsters. I can’t see him playing any time soon.

I'm not, but as a long term injury plug Ferguson plays anywhere along the backline. If it came down to just PVA being injured, Ferguson I would imagine trumps Mitchell, who technically belongs to the youth team.

As it stands Ferguson and Mitchell have to play because Palace only have 4 fit defenders...

Hopefully Ferguson can earn a place long term though...

Stuart Armstrong has been involved in 9 goals in his last 12 pl starts.

8 of those returns has come in 8 separate matches highlighting his consistency.

For just 5.5 he offers insane value given his performance at the later stages of last season. Agree?

Still outscored by any good 5.5m attacking defender with good fixtures. Transfer the defender when he has bad fixtures, injury or terrible form... To another 4.5 to 5.5m attacking defender with good fixtures

Fair enough. but at that price point able to jump on other midfeilders who are in good form and fixture. with another 0.5 or 1m i could afford decent punts

Plus we got plenty of excellent 4.5 attacking defs like vinagre justin kwp dallas/ayling lamptey emerging

Id take Armstrong Ayling/Dallas over 4.5 Bellerin any day

Tentatively agree. I think the 5.5m slot in midfield is surprisingly good.

I really wouldn't be too unhappy to rotate between:

Saka, ASM, Armstrong, Harrison, Podence. It's got good variety. I like the price point. I think I'll take one of these guys to start and pivot if need be.

Agree. If we're basing value on post-restart performance then Trezeguet at Villa is also decent at 5.5. Pending fixtures I'm interested in transfer roulette with those Armstrong, Trez and ASM.

    Draft #2

    McCarthy Meslier
    TAA AWB Saliba Taylor Johnson
    Salah KdB Rashford Foden ASM
    Martial Antonio Vassilev

Very set I think on Salah, KdB and TAA to start this season as the spine of the team.

    In defence of FPL Chaos:

Not to wax overly philosophical, but life naturally includes some element of chaos. If it didn't then we would all of us have succeeded greatly in life and would want for nothing. My plans on entering university included having my doctorate by 27, and that of course did not pan out.

Early team news, players getting injured overnight in varying styles by aftershave bottles, Playstation sessions, thinking you're above the rest of the country and going out during lockdown like the gormless Grealish that you are.

FPL is not a solved game. The stats are there to be studied, but once that whistle blows it's a brand new game, and what went before - whilst informative - has no real bearing on what will come over the next 90. Sterling didn't meet his statistical potential until the restart. United, full of talent, but didn't spark until Bruno joined the team. So, should teams not be allowed to make transfers so as to maintain the "known" element of football consistent?

Of course not. Yes having a deadline on the cusp of when team news usually comes out will result in cases such as we had in 38+, where Klopp pulled a Pep, but you can't argue that there are those who live in awkward timezones who can't be up at a certain hour. That's the case for fantasy baseball, NFL, NBA, etc. Team sheet leaks are part and parcel of the game. It's auld Matt who walks his dogs past the training ground, who knows the kit manager like a brother, gets the nod and wink for a flutter down in Ladbrokes.

FPL is not chess. There is meant to be some randomness, a fluke cross that goes in at the far post, a wrong footed keeper, Tim Howard hoofing the ball the full length of the pitch for an attacking return. We laud some of these moments as if we're zen masters of FPL, that our hunches were on the nose, but they weren't, we got lucky. In chess a top level player will never lose a game in 100 against someone who dabbles. Magnus could play 7 million other team managers and lose precisely zero games. But he got lucky on some weeks.

The 90 minute deadline loses its appeal now. Breakfast Club will have no urgency about it... FPL Rockstar has been dropped by his label and will no longer be churning out top hits. We'll all be the poorer for it in the end.

I disagree. I feel randomness in the actual matches is all well and food. Randomness outside the match meaning not all have the opportunity to prepare in the same way makes the game unfair.
I still feel fpl need to be transparent on price rises as this is another element that heavily favours those with time and resources.
Should the game be about making the best decisions given a set of information available to all or should it be about getting information the majority dont have and making decisions based off that?
The team leaks are akin to insider trading in some respects

On face value it’s not great at Everton, other than richarlison the players they bought have not done it. I would imagine there would be some promise of some very good signings to come in. I don’t think it will be too many as you cant keep buying players to then hope it works, i would say 3 very good signings

    .
For me it's these are the only players I would even consider:

Elite: Salah, Mane, Sterling, KDB, Aubameyang

You need both Mane and Mo or you need to be on the right one as captain. With TAA captain you're not gambling on having the right mid.

            2. Ze_Austin
              • 5 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

210 points in a season that started with an Alisson injury (TAA isn't a captain with Adrian in goal) while Salah had 23 more points while blanking more often. Spend 12 on Auba, 11.5 on KDB/Sterling, 10.5 on Bruno or 9.0 on Son instead and cap them in games where you wouldn't cap a Liverpool player, and you have a cheap Pool captain... But your first reply was "I've failed as a manager", hence my confusion about your point here

        3. pingissimus
          • 5 Years
          3 years, 8 months ago

          But you're excluding this

probability of Liverpool not conceding may exceed probability of having the wrong mid. Mo and Mane do not haul together, TAA is the safe option and has a similar ceiling to Mane 🙂

What analysis do you need? Their stats are both very good, whether they play together or not. Nobody has any evidence whatsoever on the Salah/Mane front apart from results, which in a game that includes a fair deal of random variance is pretty shaky ground.

I take issue with statements like ‘Mo and Mane do not haul together’ and ‘you can pick the wrong mid’ - they’re independently good options or they’re not. I’ve not seen any real evidence to the contrary.

Big chances, SIB, chances created, etc, etc.

                      They’re both elite players individually.

Absolutely no argument that they’re elite players - they are fantastic... but putting those two elite players SiB’s & Big Chances & XGabc’s together doesn’t always make them better FPL prospects individually though is the point I think Pinginis was getting at

There’s definitely been a shift (That I could see on the pitch anyway) in Liverpool’s attacking output over the last 12-18 months away from a “Salah Focal point” & towards a Salah-Mané twin threat

Sharing those returns can, does, & has made the team better, but doesn’t always help the individuals individual output, and individual FPL prospects, especially when coupled with those gradual price inflations up to he 12.0’s over that same spell

They’ll probably both be at the business end of the points table, but the job sharing has definitely put me off Salah in recent times

Why do attackers share points? Because the entire team is good and neither has monopoly over set pieces, with Salah having pens but the team not earning many anyway. Imagine Sterling and Agüero were both midfielders in a full injury free season. That's what you have with Salah and Mané now

TAA has corners, direct and indirect free kicks, cross spamming, team dependence on him for creativity... Basically KDB with fewer shots/goals but 4 points for clean sheets instead of 1

If sterling and aguero were both midfielders i would expect (key word expect) multiple times a season where they both haul (double digits). 1G/1A each, or even 1G for one and 1G1A for the other gets them there sometimes.

Of course it’s entirely possible that they wouldn’t, but I don’t think there’s anything about the two individual players that would make it more likely than not.

Maybe I'm being too closed minded... I guess if there was a opponent with a solid defence, and almost zero attacking threat, you could make a case for TAA over Salah... but I dunno...

It wouldn't be a regular choice for me but I made exactly this calculation in FH 31 against Palace,

I could have gone both Mo Mane and captains one but I decided TAA was the "sure thing" as captain - his return was more nailed in my view and 6 would have been a low return given his threat.

Lucked out perhaps but no more than in any captaincy decision

You’d be suprised - I went with neither from around Christmas onwards last year in favour of the Pool defenders, and it was a huge factor in a massive OR improvement

The whole “OMG but you need one of Salah/Mané thing” - it’s not that they’re bad of course - they are superb.... But they definitely do share returns now where Salah used to monopolise them

And there’s always more than one way to skin the cat - particularly when you’ve cheaper players like Bruno & KDB on the scene now

That shouldn't mean that you avoid both.

It's really stupid when a Liverpool attacker is the best option but because you can't decide them you pick neither.

Salah and KdB are a cut above the rest. Would need a good reason not to cap one of those.

The chasing bunch are: Sterling, Auba, Fernandes, Rashford, Werner, Kane, Aguero.

I captained very regularly in the Maybe category last time. Just chose the best player in the side that week. The only time I really regretted not importing a specific captain was the 50:50 decision not to import Sterling late on - that cost me

I would add TAA into this. Don't see why the 4th highest scorer in the game is excluded. He's got a slightly better blanking frequency than the mids and hauls almost as regularly. If Liverpool are on a cs run he's a logical option anyway.

My intension has been to share the armband with my two premium mids, KDB and Bruno. You're making me think of occasionally adding TAA into the mix. I don't see the need for Salah and Mane; my feeling is that as Liverpool under Klopp mature and chase multiple trophies, they'll get into the habit of going 2-0 up and shutting shop, meaning plenty clean sheets but few big scores. City and United on the other hand are more vulnerable at the back but will get more 4s and 5s. That's why I've maintained my 3 Big Reds at the back stance, and 5 Mancs further up the pitch.

In your position then TAA likely makes sense in certain weeks - when Mo leads the poll and City have an indifferent fixture! You get quadruple defence and if Mo is good for attacking returns then so is TAA. Bigger stake but bigger return on the triple up gamble

Injuries come into it of course but just looking at patterns of results over the last two seasons all of Liverpool, City dn Wolves have a propensity to go on runs of cs. Form in defence and not just attack.

It's a bizarre notion captaining a defender but it does make sense. Maybe 4 or 5 times over the season once we're sure Pool are on a CS run.

Agreed -4/5 times is likely limit

But bizarre notion not to consider the 4th highest scoring player in the game is my counter

Looking at potential value busters in the mid range attackers.Tricky to identify one that is season value but that isn't the game I'm playing. All of these have high ceilings and a record of going on form runs. None may be great as long term holds on a 100 mill budget but their season value price may be misleading - they're all 9.5 players when they're hot. Just shift when not.

    Traore
    Antonio

It's impossible to get a viable team with Salah, KDB, Trent, Bruno, Rashford and Greenwood isn't it... Those are the most underpriced players imo (yes even Salah) For me I think Bruno has to be the fall guy, which is a bit of a shame, but it's Greenwood and Rash who will be at the end of the attacks and as mids they seem essential.

I think you're very right... not often I say that.

But yes, I agree completely. Salah is 0.5m cheaper than he should be. KdB a full 1m. TAA 0.5m, Bruno 0.5m, Rashford 1m, Greenwood 1m if ManUtd don't sign Sancho.

I will definitely have Salah and KdB. Then it becomes which United and I'm going Rashford right now...

Anyone else looking at the likes of Ings and Jimmy and realizing a downgrade to Antonio/Wood lets you update a 4.5 defender to the likes of Doherty/VVD/Laporte.

Antonio + VVd seems miles better than Ings/Jimmy + 4.5

Think those mid table strikers that have been bumped up to just sub premium price offer poor value.

      Nope.

I think the 4.5m defender slot this year is very strong. Much stronger than last year.

            I didn't say they weren't.

They potentially represent value at the price point.

              You're right.
I'm looking at Mitro & Che adams from that price range

I've tried numerous drafts with those two, but my current thinking is Antonio is significantly better value than both or anyone else under 6.5, so I've gone for him and a 4.5 benchy.

      I'd add Traore into that

This is calculating that like Mitrovic he's a player to have for a run of fixtures and not necessarily as a long hold

Tried to build a team around it, 3-5-2:

      4.5 keeper
      TAA | Doherty | VVD
      Salah (C) | KdB | Mahrez | Greenwood | Foden
      Antonio | Mitrovic

      4.0 keeper | Dallas/Burnley 4.5 def | 4.0 def | 4.5 str

Foden to Traore if triple city midfield is too risky!

Mahrez is such a no go for me unless it's as a DGW punt, his minutes are ridiculously inconsistent and there's nothing to suggest that won't continue, he's very annoying to own.

Keepers: Take out pens an look at points per minute per price. I had Pope and it seems the clear choice. Same as 2 4.5's
Backs TAA no brainer, ven from ownership perspective. Doc a wait and see; prefer Laporte. VVD safe. Get a 4.5 gem after 4 GW's.
Mids: Salah and KDB sound as captains. Sterling toss with KDB. Mahrez gametime could be frustrating; as with Foden. Greenwood good if no Sancho.
Forwards: Antonio could revert to old position. It will cost 2 ft's to move to a (Kane, Martial, Ings, Werner) with your price spread.

KdB, Foden, Greenwood, Antonio are the only ones I think are clearly underpriced.

The other ones are fair and have the potential to outperform their price tag. The 4 above are clearly going to do better imo.

Yup. Got 6 of them, plus Soucek, Vinagre (short term) and Saliba who ought to be on the list.

Just 4.5 for an Arsenal defender. Supposed to strengthen the back line. If Martinez keeps his place in goal, also at 4.5 there will be surprisingly good value in the Arsenal defence.

Looking for some advice on FPL draft, thinking of doing it for the first time in a 3 person league, approximately how long will it take for us to pick our teams? 5 minutes or 5 hours?

I think this is probably going to be it for me, fixtures aside.

    McCarthy
    TAA Gomez Saliba Vinagre
    KDB Greenwood Salah Auba Soucek
    Ings

    4.0 Douglas 4.5 4.5

    Thoughts?

How about this way to work out who to put in… You compare players in blocks of three. An example:

Salah (or Mané) 12m 275 eXpected Points Returned (best guess!)
      Defender 4.5m 125 xPR
      Defender 4.5m 125 xPR
      TOTAL 21m 525 xPR

Greenwood 7.5m 175 eXpected Points Returned
      Robinson 7m 175 xPR
      van Dijk 6.5m 175 xPR
      TOTAL 21m 525 xPR

You then apply ‘critical analysis’ ~ With Trent locked in, do I want three Liverpool defenders, especially as Klopp says he isn’t going to defend the title, he’s going to attack the next one. Does that mean you need Salah (or Mané) - but are 275 points over-generous to my Salah expectation. Will he reach that, and have I been mean with the defenders eXpected point returns – are they likely to get nearer 200? Yes, possibly, but having Salah means I can Captain him occasionally. I'm unlikely to want to Captain the others.
OK, I think that’s my mind made up. Now to do this for more players…

Have a great season everyone. FPL Chess mini-league. 700+ players. All welcome.

Nice idea. Roughly 2500 points needed to do well. My approach is to get 200 points ish from each player so loading as many premiums as possible. Need the captain to get 300x2 points to offset the few 4.5m players 150 points.

          1. @FPL_Chess
              3 years, 8 months ago

Thanks. Yes, the target is 2500 points but I think you need to find value in the lower ranks as well as the premiums. The premiums alone won't carry fodder.

I like it. 4.5's getting 150pts might be a push unless gems turn up

The only problem with this is you need realistic xPR - if you get that wrong the analysis can be skewed. For example, it's highly unlikely that many 4.5m defenders get 125 points - last season Aurier, Maguire, Digne, Chilwell, Walker etc. all got less than 125 pts.

            1. @FPL_Chess
                3 years, 8 months ago

Very true, hence the requirement for critical analysis of my own xPR values. Perhaps 125 points for my 4.5 defenders was a tad optimistic. 🙂

For the record by-the-way, I've just looked it up... Baldock, Egan, and Dunk started last season on 4.5m and scored 142, 133, and 128 respectively. Predicting the correct three defenders is a bit tricky though. I'll give you that. 🙂

Yeah, agreed. I think the analysis might actually work better well if you allocated the most conservative xPR to a player/group of players. e.g 4.5m Defenders get 75 xPR, TAA gets 170 xPR. That way you end up choosing your highest floor, with plenty of upside to excite you. 🙂
