The impact Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has had on United’s Fantasy assets

The jury is still out on Manchester United’s Fantasy assets going into the new campaign.

The new manager bounce that the club experienced after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment in December gave way to some middling form in the final nine Gameweeks of the season.

Their pre-season results (five wins from six) have been quietly encouraging, at least, with Inter Milan and Spurs among the teams already beaten in July.

This latest Numbers Game piece differs from the usual format as we focus on the impact Solskjaer had on United’s assets in the second half of last season.

The Norwegian first took charge of the Red Devils in Gameweek 18, so we will examine United’s stats before and after the departure of Jose Mourinho.

Holebas or 2x 4.5 to complete my Robbo VVD Coleman defence?

Have 0.5 in hand but currently thinking I’d rather keep it that way. I’m seeing some flexibility in early transfers as a real boon given all the maxed out sides with zero bench. Wrong think? There are of course likely upgrades I could make to Gw 1 defence.

Not really tempted. Don’t see he has the same possible attacking threat as Holebas and Foyth and Aurier and Poch generally make him feel very short term when the fixtures are mixed for cs.

Holebas is of course punty himself - suspect I’m getting tricked by thinking he can repeat 2018. Leaning towards 4.5 4.4 right now.

Really like Watford's first 4 gws. Holebas could be great and in that time you could find an alternative if you need it before their rough fixtures

What is your thinking on Coleman over Digne? I'm very tempted but may hold off then downgrade a couple of weeks in.

Saving 0.5 is part of it of course as is the late season form that had Coleman his equal. I’m not really convinced by Everton defence so don’t want to over-invest. I’m also prejudiced as I had Digne as a 4.9 bencher last time - rarely regretted benching him.

That said Kean instead of DCL could turn Digne into a great pick. If he is then I may be priced out. 🙁 Might go there if I decide not to put 0.5 in the bank.

    Here is a bit different draft,more forward-oriented:

    Alisson/Button
Stones/Coleman (Taylor, Guilbert, Lundstram rotation for 3rd def)
    Salah/Moura/KDB/BSilva/Perez
    Auba/King (greenwood)

I like the fact that you've gone slightly lighter in defence, I'm starting to modify my draft team to reflect that balance as well.

      Unlikely to start as
      a) Poch usually make it longer for new attacking signings to get into the team
      b) Moura and Lamela were both very good in preseason, and both needs playing time alongside Son and Alli and all of the youngsters.

Please give me ratings on this team:

    POPE - HEATON
    VVD - ROBERTSON - ZINCH - stearman - lundstram
    STERLING - MANE - MOURA - AYOZE - FRASER
WILSON - WOOD - xande silva

My plan is to rotate the two 4.5 keepers, and improve my bench with the money I get for one of my lower price player that popping early season.

    Cheers!

5/10 (mostly losing points for mane)

Mane has had no pre season just rejoined the squad and may well not start week 1

You don’t need both the keepers

If mane was salah then 8/10

        Thank you for your honesty!
I would hardly imagine Mane won't start for pool. It's a bit of a risk but imho if Mane hits it as last season, Salah will be dropped out from many teams because of the +1mil price.
The difference between their points only 28 last season. For me this worth a try.

It’s your call and I get what you are saying and it def could work out for you. I do like the rest of your team.

But definitely monitor Liverpool news as to whether mane plays GW1 as if he doesn’t and salah goes big you won’t be enjoying FPL and it’ll only be 1 week in!

The only way I can get Salah in if I blast my defense in two ways:

            a) Robertson off and Walker in
            b) VVD off, Walker in and one of my keepers off for a 4m keeper.

Its another option not to double on city defense but get Digne in....

            Whats your thoughts on it?

Surprised not many teams have a west ham attacker considering our fixtures after city gw1.

    Brighton, Watford, Norwich, villa.

Heaps of good priced attackers around the 6.5 to 7.5 price tags. With the way we are set up to play we are definitely playing the, we don’t care if you score 3 we will score 5 mentality, expect lots of attacking football but also not many clean sheets.

Lanzini at 6.5 is a gem, has got 3 in 3 for pre season and back to his old self before his long injury last season, Haller and Fornals have settled in well and Wilshire is pulling all the strings, hopefully he can stay fit.

Take a look at community article on value. He may be the highest scorer but that doesn’t make him best value. He’s better value this year but still Sterling is equal in that respect and if you believe in premium forwards then it’s probably a binary choice midterm anyway.

        1. TheDragon

I’m starting from a view that sterling and salah are essential from week 1 and I’ll build a team around that.

I take your point - it does depend how else you spend your cash (but value argument on salah maybe changes a bit given captaincy?)

Is it worth dropping Zinch for a £4.5 4th defender like Dunk/Cathcart/Diop/Guilbert to upgrade Fraser to KDB? Just thinking that every season one 4.5 defender gem always pops up. And Dunk to Leicester should be good if it goes through. Would give me this team:

    Heaton
    TAA VVD Digne £4.5
    Salah Sterling KDB Perez
    Wilson Wesley/Adams

    Bench: 4.0 Lundstram/Rico Hayden/Dendonker Greenwood

I'm guessing most would have Wilson over Bilva?

Man City defence is doing my head in, going to start with PVA and Moura then when the time is right switch them to a City defender and Zaha.

    Pope
    Robbo VVD Digne PVA
    Salah Sterling Moura Perez
    Wilson King
    Heaton Dendonker Lundstram Greenwood

      Seems sound to me

Fair to remember that City defence only really came very good late on last time. Lots didn’t get them on second wc for instance. It’s not like Liverpool where you’re likely to miss attacking returns too.

      Note on PvA

He benefits from having Zaha in because all the ball goes down his side.
