Fit-again Pulisic waiting to fully deliver on some impressive underlying stats

Christian Pulisic (£6.9m) is our focus as we continue to assess the fit-again players who could make an impact in Fantasy Premier League upon its restart this month.

The American has been sidelined since New Year’s Day but was on the cusp of a return shortly before top-flight football was called to a halt in March.

It’s been a disjointed debut Premier League season for the former Borussia Dortmund winger, who initially failed to establish himself in the Chelsea starting XI before being handed eight successive starts in late autumn.

Pulisic now returns to bolster Frank Lampard’s options across the frontline, with the Blues pushing for a top-four spot.

Costing less than £7.0m and owned by just 3.4% of FPL managers (many of those will be inactive teams, too), the USA international is, at the very least, an attractively priced differential – although one who comes with caveats.

We delve into the numbers in the Members Area to further assess his credentials in the article below.

WHAT IS PULISIC’S FITNESS LATEST?

Pulisic benched as Lampard switches to a 3-4-3 against unchanged Spurs

Pulisic was last seen in Gameweek 21, when he lasted 65 minutes of Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Missing the FA Cup third-round tie against Nottingham Forest with an issue with his adductor, the American was subsequently ruled out for several weeks with what his manager described as a “nasty injury”.

An early comeback in February was aborted as the problem proved to be more complicated than initially thought and it wasn’t until the beginning of March that Pulisic was ready to feature in a behind-closed-doors friendly.

Speaking ahead of Gameweek 29, just before COVID-19 stopped play, Lampard said:

We just had an in-house game here which Ruben [Loftus-Cheek] and Christian Pulisic took part in.

It’s great to see Christian get some minutes. He’s short of match fitness but it’s the first time the injury has felt at a level to get him on a big pitch in a relatively competitive match. That’s a big step forward, hopefully.

The unforeseen three-month hiatus has given Pulisic even more time to fully recharge, with the player himself saying of his injury in May:

I didn’t take it as seriously as I think I should have. It was one of those you felt you could do a lot of things but you try to push it that one extra step and realise it’s not ready yet.

It was very tough and frustrating going through times like that. I underestimated it and tried to get back as soon as I could because I just wanted to play so bad.

If anything, I’ve given myself a little more time to rest now and make sure that I’m 100 per cent fit. I’d say I’m fully recovered and ready to go as soon as we get back.

The winger has since been sighted in full training at Cobham, as preparations ramp up for the Blues’ fixture against Aston Villa.

WHOSE PLACE WILL HE TAKE?

You're right 'template time'. It's wrecked the season end.
Everyone will have almost the same DGW players.
Most will also bench boost in the DGW if they have it.
Most with a WC left will then use it straight away and have template teams after that.
This feels like a decision to keep FPL sponsors happy that more players are on the site again.

    Unlimited transfers - shocking decision.
Well done everyone who has used their second wildcard already and had a good moan, you got what you wanted.

Yer. This season will be like

      " i finished in top

Don’t think you understand how screwed those who’ve used their second wildcard are.

I literally can’t attack this double unlike those who have the wildcard left. They can have an 11 of double gameweek players and then wildcard them out the following week!

It's a massive middle finger to the people who have been coming back to the website week-on-week.

I guess website traffic is the motivator, eh.

Well, removes the 'benefit' of a slow wild card which is probably a good thing. Also prevents people from free-hitting which again is a good thing.

May use these unlimited transfers to make a DGW team and then make wholesale changes via FH or WC for the next time out.

I think reversing everything back to when the game froze would've been more fair and made more sense. Suppose giving a free WC is far easier to code.

Actually come to think of it, bench boost into this one given the massive chance of rotation and potential lack of future DGW opportunities. Happy days.

Bad decision. People spend a season evolving their team using their smarts and in one fell swoop others that have already blown their WC can breeze in and replicate it more or less. Not surprised at all by FPL though,

They were on a tough spot to be fair. it was unfair any way they did it. Many people would have been disadvantaged if they didn’t do this ahead of an unknown double with the blanks people prepared/made sacrifices for no longer existing. I think they should have given 5 transfers but understand the decision they’ve made

As a slightly peeved sencond wildcard holder, I guess the main benefit of this unlimited transfer lark is that those without a second wildcard cannot make loads of transfers to take advantage of the DGW, then wildcard to reset the team.

A lot of negative comments on here about the unlimited transfers, I agree it's not idea but I still think having saved your wildcard gives a big advantage for the rest of the season. Use the free transfers to build a team for the DGW (and BB if you have this) then you have the advantage of being able to wildcard after that having seen teams line ups, form etc.

I'll take what I can get, but the absolutely aggravating thing is the fact I have built up my team into one I like, and it has value tied up in players.

If I attempt to wildcard back to it in GW31, I now cannot afford that team. WTF?

      So, it's either:
      - Leave as-is; miss out on the DGW opportunities
      - Free Hit - but not able to take advantage of the unlimited transfers
      - Make unlimited transfers for BB & wildcard afterwards.

Yep fair enough, I've also done the same thing and agree it's annoying. But... I'm not too worried about losing that team now. Players back from injury, fitness levels, rotation etc. will change things. Think I'm just going to try and keep a couple of key players with value tied up.

The only people it truly benefits are those who didn't bother planning.

Those without a second WC who were planning on using FH are in a far worse position now, i.e. loading up on DGW players will leave a mess to fix in the following GW's that wouldn't be an issue if able to use FH.

As a result, I will likely just go with 3-4 DGW players now.

Saving my BB anyway, hard to know what players are carrying form.

It's not crazy to go without Liverpool players is it? Have a wildcard to fall back on

Personally I would use BB straight away.

Much easier to create a team of 15 now with UT than later on. Then just concentrate on XI in coming GWs

Used WC last gw29 and i dont feel that bad.
I will FH for the comeback and then have my team back for "gw31" (2 or 3 transfers to update to Son/Rash and i'm good till the end)

    Pope,Krul
    Taa, Alonso, Doh, Taylor, Cath
    Salah, Pepe, Bruno, Sarr, Saka
    Auba, DCL, Jota

What are people who have already used their WC doing?

I'm in that boat and I'm thinking of playing BB this week and then FHing in a week where my players generally have bad fixtures. My BB team won't be full of DGWers but more balanced because I don't want to be stuck with SHU players for example in their bad run of games.

I'm doing the same and downscaling my DGW plans.

What does your team look like atm?

I'm also considering FH this week and then reverting to the WC team I made in GW 37:

            Pope - Foster
            Maguire - TAA - VVD - Aurier - Boly
            Salah - KDB - Cantwel - Sarr - Fernandes
            DCL - Jimenez - Jota

But I think FH is more valuable than BB so I'd rather FH in a week in which I'm more informed about how players are performing etc.

Defence aside, my team is very similar to yours tbh.

Undecided on how to navigate the remaining GWs, will have to give it some thought.
