Pro Pundits - Ash

Which relegation-threatened FPL players will be most motivated for season run-in?

Fantasy Premier League managers would do well to consider players at the wrong end of the table when picking their squads for Project Restart.

Even in a normal season, Gameweek 30 is usually when we start identifying which clubs have more to play for than others, and those in danger of relegation always fall into this category.

The fact that we have all been given unlimited transfers makes considering these options even easier.

After all, the form book has been chucked out of the window but the league places remain unchanged.

Those hovering around the bottom end of the table will do everything possible to secure top-flight survival during their final run in.

So, it’s time to look at what’s on offer with a fresh pair of eyes…

Jack Grealish

  • Price: £6.4m
  • Ownership: 21.3%
  • Next four fixtures: SHU + CHE | new | WOL | liv

A player under £7.0m with 14 attacking returns in less than 30 games is one that simply can’t be ignored.

In many ways, it’s puzzling to think how a player of Jack Grealish’s (£6.4m) calibre is playing for a 19th placed Premier League team than one challenging for European honours. If things had been different he would have been a full England international by now.

In my view, he is a must-have for the final run-in, for several reasons.

Firstly, Aston Villa will be featuring in the Double Gameweek with two games at Villa Park. Of course, the ‘home factor’ may be less significant with the absence of fans but they are must-win games for Dean Smith’s men.

At this stage, they cannot afford to sit back and hope for the best. They will have to go for goals, even if they concede a lot in the process.

Since August, among all sub-£7.0m players, Grealish is top for goals scored, second for final third touches (836) and second for shots.

He the absolute talisman for Aston Villa too, having been involved with 41% of their Premier League goals this season. You would need to have a really good reason not to have him in your FPL team.

Teemu Pukki

  • Price: £6.5m
  • Ownership: 12.9%
  • Next four fixtures: SOU | EVE | ars | BHA

At the start of the season, it seemed that Teemu Pukki (£6.5m) could do no wrong. He began his Premier League career by scoring six goals in the first five games, becoming the first real bandwagon of the campaign.

But by Gameweek 13 Pukki and the Norwich attack seemed to be finished, as he failed to score in eight consecutive matches.

Since then it has become clear that the Norwich forward likes to score in batches, going on a run of goals before tailing off again.

This kind of pattern is frustrating but at least we know that his next purple patch could always just around the corner. Will we have to wait for long?

He may be completely overlooked by many FPL managers as Norwich don’t have a Double Gameweek but their fixtures in the next few weeks do have some appeal.

And, as far as value is concerned, he compares well with similarly-priced assets this season.

Among forwards priced at £6.5m or less, he ranks second for penalty area touches (158) and second for goal attempts (74).

Only Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£6.5m) has scored more goals than him in that price category.

In keeping with the theme of targetting players with something to motivate them, I think there could be a strong case of sacrificing a Double Gameweek 30+ player for Pukki.

Norwich cannot afford any more slip-ups and face a Southampton team who appear to be relatively safe from relegation first-up.

But even after that, the Canaries face Everton, Arsenal and Brighton, all of whom have had defensive issues this season, so even if you were to go all-in for the Double Gameweek, I think you could consider him beyond it if you’re Free Hitting or Wildcarding in the near future.

Ismaïla Sarr

Watford and Wolves double-up for Gameweek 22 Scout Picks
Ismaila Sarr celebrates a goal for Watford
  • Price: £6.4m
  • Ownership: 2.7%
  • Next four fixtures: LEI | bur | SOU | che

Ever since Nigel Pearson was appointed manager at Vicarage Road, Watford have defied the odds and have shown their strength as a tough unit to beat. Their win against an unstoppable Liverpool team was a sign of how far they have come.

One player of the most influential players for the Hornets pre-lockdown was Ismaïla Sarr (£6.4m).

Since Pearson arrived in Hertfordshire, the winger has scored four goals and registered four assists.

To give you an idea of just how tricky he has been to defend against, he has attempted more take-ons than the likes of Harvey Barnes (£6.2m) and Todd Cantwell (£4.7m) this season, despite not being a first-team regular for much of the campaign and missing out through injury too.

Also, Sarr has only scored one less goal than Mason Mount (£6.2m) despite registering almost half as many minutes as the Chelsea man.

As with Pukki, there’s a strong case to have Sarr in your team as early as next week.

Watford may be out of the relegation zone but they will certainly need to score more goals to keep afloat and if there’s anyone that will be producing substantial attacking involvements for them it will be the Senegal international.

Callum Wilson

  • Price: £7.4m
  • Ownership: 4.7%
  • Next four fixtures: CRY | wol | NEW | mun

It has not been the best of seasons for Callum Wilson (£7.4m) or Bournemouth, but he did show some promise just before March’s coronavirus outbreak.

In the last six matches before the league was suspended, the mid-priced forward found the net three times.

Now, whether Wilson can instantly get his scoring touch back after a long break does remain to be seen.

That said, his struggles in front of goal haven’t been for lack of trying this season.

After all, he has more penalty area touches than the fellow forwards Troy Deeney (£6.2m) and Calvert-Lewin this season. And for strikers priced £7.5m or below, Wilson is fourth-highest for big chances created, hinting at some assist potential too.

Bournemouth are due to face Crystal Palace and Newcastle United in two of their first three games back from lockdown and perhaps those tests could be an early indication of where Wilson is at.

In the last 12 months we have seen two different sides to the England international.

Last season he registered 26 attacking returns as Bournemouth finished 11 points away from the relegation zone in 14th place.

But despite some early promise in 2019/20, Wilson went on a completely barren spell between Gameweek 8 and 23 with his price duly falling by £0.5m in the process.

But we know this is a man with proven Premier League and international pedigree, so maybe all he needed was some rest and bit of luck on his side again. Only time will tell.

Interesting reading on some clubs like Bournemouth and Brighton who are struggling to find opponents for friendlies due to their location. Typically teams need 4-6 weeks of pre season games, the busiest seem to have had 1-2 games so far. I don't think anyone can really predict what's going to happen now, there is no form, there are no certainties.

Match fitness is going to be severely lacking and without fans the tempo of the games will surely decrease. Those teams which play with a high tempo maybe be impacted the most, what do you think?

Germany was able to adapt a little easier but PL have had an additional 3 weeks or so without games.

Was thinking the same - will likes of Aguero, Rashford and other explosive players be good for any more than 45 minutes without any match fitness to speak of.

Guess it plays well into the selecting ‘talisman’ who cant/won’t be rotated method

          Grealish, jiminez, pukki, Kane Etc

These player are much less likely to be rotated with small/poor squads + relegation and Europe at stake and they won’t get run into the ground in 8 games

Still debating the bench boost vs free hit decision for this week. This would be my GW31 squad if I free hit this week. Doesn't look too bad but any opinions welcome.

    Pope Button
    TAA Boly Lascelles Holgate Lundstram
    Sterling KDB Salah Mane Cantwell
    Ings DCL Nketiah

One of Sterling, Salah or Mane can then make way to get some Man U in.

All the best for the run in mate. I'm deliberating the FH/BB as well with this squad to return to:

      Pope, Stek
      TAA, Saiss, Lascelles, Egan, Taylor
      Salah, KDB, Son, Fernandes, Cantwell
      Jimi, DCL, Rashford

If you had a WC left then undoubtedly the best option would be to use all your transfers and BB then WC back to your preferred team, I wonder what percentage of players still had those options?

      Not sure about the 'undoubtedly'.

I think there's merit in delaying the post-bench boost wildcard to say GW32+ to understand where the injuries, form and teams area. Also gives you a chance to delay ditching Liverpool assets.

Therefore you need to strike a balance between GW30+ BB and a GW31+ team. I can't see a good way to do this with > 9 DGW players.

QOTSA's posts and conundrum are interesting as I hadn't realised he'd only used his first wildcard and still has the other chips remaining.

Lot's of different strategies to think about if you had the options, all the different scout casts seem to suggest that the one above is the way to go if you had the option. I don't, I'm FH

        1. One More Hit

To each their own. I'm sure this'll come back to bite me on the back side but I'm currently in the top 2.5k, so comfortable playing my own game. Reading opinions on here out of interest and mainly to see if Salah will play.

I don't want three Villa, and Man City's midfield is an absolute minefield. I'm not into the Saka hype either, there seems to be more benefit in getting Fleck in.

Therefore max of 9 for me, means I can get through GW31 with one free transfer. Whereas if you've stocked up with Villa and all three Sheff Utd, your hand is probably forced into wildcarding.

I delayed my first wildcard until GW19 this season and suffered my biggest rank drop that week. While there's no form or otherwise to go off, it's an unusual DGW in more ways than one and I can see the merit in people choosing to FH this week instead of bench boosting.

Yeah, if you have all chips left and a decent 31 team then it makes it harder. If I bench boost and use the free transfers who am I really going to have that i won't have on free hit anyway?

For me, it's that we are potentially going to see some longer cameos and more substitutions. That's why I'm bench boosting this time out, regardless of DGW/SGW.

Mane is compromising the quality of your bench boost.

You are boosting Leno (good), lascelles, targett, cantwell. And playing Ayew and Fleck.

If you are wildcarding out of this in 31 as you've said you have to consider letting mane go imo.

Depends what your sell value is but if it's 12.5 I think you could swap mane to Bruno, cantwell to mount and lascelles to doherty/Alonso.

          Bruno, Mount, Doherty
          Or
          Mane, cantwell, lascelles.

Sure the one with Mane could outscore but I'd be more comfortable with a. But I would say that I sold salah for that exact reason.

    Saiss or Targett

i am considering making a BB team with a view to WC after City Liverpool.

    Leno stays in goal.
So i need single gameweek players now with good fixtures to complenent my team.

Next week Aguero to Vardy or Kane.
    Maybe KDB to Salah/Mane

Week after a punt and WC Into United likely thereafter

    Better to get more info.

    Team do so

    Leno (Henderson)
    Saiss Soyuncu TAA (Egan Baldock)
    KDB Mahrez Grealish Saka (McGinn)
    Auba Jimenez Aguero

    Aguero KDB
    could become
    Vardy Salah

or Aguero to Kane if he shows form vs United.
Then Upgrade McGinn for GW32 if Saka (NOR) doesnt start.

I'm not getting the Targett love, sure the price but if Villa ship five over those two games he's going to cost you, Grealish is unlikely to be on the end of one of his assists either, so to have both in your team is folly imo.

Well i am fine with a goal that involves either or.
I expect Grealish to score without Targett.
Targett can do his assist in another way.

Saiss might be the better option tho

Is BB really that good this week?
You will only have 1 player on the bench who will play twice the other three will just have one game.
In a normal week you can have have four players playing one game anyway?
    Not much difference.

      Flawed logic.

If your arent bbing youre not going to have 11 dgwers. Probably 7-8 max

So essentialy, your bench has 4 dgwrers not 1

Seens a waste to only have that many dgwers. Your then banking on sgwers to get goid point, hard when Liverpool have the derby and Surs v Manu.

I'd say the fact a lot of decent cheap options with 2 games negates this somewhat.

I see Aguero getting the 1st game and being subbed at 70-80mins. Not starting the second but coming on for the last 20mins or so.

Sane pushes sterling to his favoured side. But it’s a real roulette on who plays with mahrez & bilva in the mix

    http://www.premierleague.com/news/1678559

There will be unlimited free transfers for Gameweek 30+ and The Scout returns to provide tips ahead of the first deadline on 17 June

Last week it was confirmed the 2019/20 Premier League season will resume on 17 June, if all safety requirements are in place.

And today we're pleased to let you know Fantasy Premier League is open again for FPL managers to prepare for the run-in.

But you'll notice we've made the following changes:

    - The remaining season's fixtures have been allocated new Gameweeks
    - Each new Gameweek is indicated by a "+" (e.g. GW30+, GW31+, GW32+)
    - GW30+ is a Double Gameweek starting with two midweek fixtures (AVLSHU and MCIARS) followed by a full round of 10 matches
    - FPL managers can make unlimited free transfers until the GW30+ deadline without playing a Wildcard
    - Prices of players will not change until after the GW30+ deadline has passed
    - Any unused chips or Wildcards will remain available for use before the end of the season
    - Triple Captain, Bench Boost and Free Hit chips are available in GW30+

    Using your chips
Because of there being unlimited transfers there is no need to use your Wildcard for GW30+. Managers using iOS need not use the Wildcard option available here.

Android users looking to activate their Free Hit chip for GW30+ will need to do so on the web and not the app.

    When is the first deadline?
The Gameweek 30+ deadline is Wednesday 17 June at 17:00 BST, an hour before Aston Villa v Sheffield United kicks off.

With each match being played behind closed doors and broadcast in the UK it represents a great opportunity for FPL managers to tune in and scout players, identify differentials and gain an advantage on mini-league rivals.

And in the lead-up to the Gameweek 30+ deadline, The Scout will return to provide FPL managers with comprehensive insight and tips.

    Head-to-Head leagues
Please note that Head-to-Head leagues ended in Gameweek 38. However, FPL managers can create new H2H leagues for the remaining nine Gameweeks in the normal manner.

See: Create your new head-to-head league

Classic leagues will continue as usual through to Gameweek 38+.

So why use your FT this week, and what would the best way to plan your chips ?
I still have all chips to play (WC,FH,TC,BB) and now have unlimited transfer in GW30+

So best option would be using unlimited transfer to add DGW players, and playing BB GW30+
then WC to your preferred Team GW31+, leaving you to use TC and FH between other 7 games.
Or will there be any more DGW to consider WC chip later on?
