Why FPL managers should adapt tactics and not ignore forwards in 2020/21

“Celebrate endings-for they precede new beginnings” – Jonathan Lockwood Huie

Last season was worth celebrating for me. Manchester United managed to cement a Champions League place on the final day and look like a completely different team since Bruno Fernandes (£10.5m) was signed and Paul Pogba (£8.0m) has returned from injury troubles.

And on the personal front, last season was pretty spectacular too. I managed to secure a career-best 30th finish overall which also turned out to be my second in the top 100 and the second time finishing as India’s number one manager in the last five years.

There’s no way I’m apologising for it because if you can’t gloat about something like this, what is even the point of playing FPL?

That said, even that wasn’t the best thing that happened to me last season. These high finishes are not sustainable and there was a substantial degree of luck involved. So the best thing that happened to me in 2019/20, something much easier to sustain into the new campaign, was the opportunity to write for Fantasy Football Scout. To write for you guys and share my thoughts on the big issues of FPL.

The sheer degree of encouragement and support the community has shown has been incredible. I want to just take a moment to acknowledge that I do read all of your comments and it does overwhelm and encourage me to do more as a writer and give as much as I can. I will be writing with a much greater frequency this season (weekly articles) and hope that I’m able to deliver lots of spice to your weekly Fantasy Premier League appetite.

Wipe the slate clean

So let’s get stuck into this new season. What is it that I do first? I wipe that slate clean. What must or must not have worked for you last season might not necessarily be the case this season. I can’t stress enough that FPL is a very dynamic game and having stringent rules could result in you being your own enemy.

Of course, that doesn’t mean good players will suddenly become bad FPL assets overnight. I’m just saying that treat each season insolation and make sure you are adapting.

For example, we didn’t have a clear consistent big hitter last season. Because of the sheer number of premium midfielders for the new campaign, the tactic of swapping between these with transfers and the captaincy has received a lot of attention in the Fantasy community. Known as upside-chasing, this is a strategy I implemented to good effect last season. The foundation of this strategy can be found in this article I wrote last year and I’m hoping to do a follow-up on it in the coming months.

So is it a tactic I’ll be deploying again for 2020/21? Well, if you have Mohamed Salah (£12.0m) hitting his 2017/18 levels (32 goals + 12 Assists) or if we see Kevin De Bruyne (£11.5m) posting double-digit scores every Gameweek, you don’t need this strategy and you’ll have to go hunting for other ways to gain an advantage over everyone else.

The point I’m trying to make is that don’t let your preconceived notions of how this season might shape up or pre-determined strategy hinder your ability to adapt to the curve-balls that this game will throw in your face at regular intervals. And while I keep preaching about the ‘aggressive’ brand of FPL, Joshua Bull who won the whole game last season held Nick Pope (£5.5m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.5M) and De Bruyne for the entire season while Salah left his team only for a single Gameweek.

This simple fact brings me back to the first article that I wrote for FFScout. I’m going to just reiterate what I said because everyone including me needs a reminder.

“There are many ways to skin a cat and, in my opinion, none of them is wrong. You need to find your identity as an FPL player. If you are going to get sleepless nights going without Salah, don’t do it. It doesn’t suit your personality. It’s not good for your blood pressure and you don’t end up having fun. You’re better off playing the odds and percentages game because that is where your comfort zone lies.”

Do what you want with your team as long as you’re not going completely bonkers because this is a very subjective game and there isn’t any right or wrong.

Ignore the Noise

For me, there is no time better than the start of the season to mute the noise and play your own game because, honestly, everyone is just shooting in the dark and taking educated guesses at this point.

There is another thing I want to talk about when it comes to my FPL process. I see a lot of tinkering in the FPL Community and some people are on draft five before we’ve even seen the fixtures. Personally, something that helps me (especially in Pre-Season and International breaks) is spending time gathering information, spending time in the Member’s Area and doing research (I may have spent a decent amount of time last night watching TIFO videos on Werner and all the goals he scored last season) more-so than tinkering.

I have come to find that if you’ve armed yourself with information, you’re only making your instinct stronger and decisions will become a lot easier for you. It might lead to you becoming more decisive and lead to less tinkering with your team. I get that this might be ‘less fun’ for some of you but I just thought I’d give you an insight into my process.

I have had a peek at the prices, and we’ll go deeper into them once the fixtures are here, but after going through them, what excites me most is the pricing of the premium forwards.

Don’t overlook the forwards

Four of them have caught my attention and the fact that they are a million or two cheaper than the premium midfielders could mean that you could jam an extra big-hitter into your team. Allow me to talk about two of them.

Timo Werner (£9.5m)

David did an elaborate piece on him here. Let me give you the good stuff. 28 goals and 8 assists in 33 starts and one sub appearance last season. He had a very good habit of bracing in the BundesLiga. He could very well be on penalties, especially now that Willian (£8.0m) has left the club. And my favourite from David’s article:

In 2019/20 he recorded an expected goals (xG) per 90 figure of 0.62. Robert Lewandowski and Ciro Immobile were the only players across the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 to record a better score there.

Add to that the fact that Chelsea were second only to Manchester City for xG, shots in the box and big chances since Project Restart and even managed to better Liverpool’s xG for the season, I am just licking my lips.

Sergio Aguero (10.5m)

This is the lowest Aguero has been priced ever. All of us know about him but let me just leave a statistic here. He had a scoring rate of 0.95 goals per 90 minutes last season.

Amongst players that played regularly, the next best three were Olivier Giroud (0.7 goals/90), Danny Ings (0.68 goals/90) and Raheem Sterling (0.65 goals/90). See what I mean?

I’ll throw in a tweet to make a case for these two.

In case you’re wondering, the other two strikers I really like are Anthony Martial (£9.0m) who had six goals and three assists during Project Restart and Harry Kane (£10.5m) who netted 5 times in his last three games and is finally playing as a forward again.

I urge more caution with Kane than the other three because Spurs’ attacking underlying numbers are still a bit underwhelming under Jose Mourinho.

For all the attention that the midfielders have gotten, I am quite excited about the forwards this season. I’ll leave you to chew on this for now.

See you next week. Same Timo, Same Place.

    Less Hits this Year ?

So I've just analysed the fourteen hits I took last year to see the immediate impact on my rank the following week.

I took 10 hits of -4 and in 8/10 weeks my rank was worse week after - Fail

For the two hits I took of -8 each resulted in a rank rise the week after - Success.

Maybe the lesson is less hits and if taking any do a -8 mini wildcard and sort a few problems at once.

it's about taking the right hits obviously (easier said than done).

i avoided taking hits for sterling and aubameyang when i was certain they were the best captain choices, just to avoid taking hits (think i missed out on about 70 points a result).

Hits normally work IF players are kept 3-4 weeks based on form fixures I find.

they can work for a single week if it is a big scoring captain that pays for itself and more.

Yes i agree hits have to be for medium to long tern ownership, short term points chasing rarely works.

      I think of a mini-wildcard as 2FT & one -4 hit.

I’d probably only do a -8 in the run up to DGW or something similar.

    Thoughts on this 4-4-2?

    McCarthy - (4.0)
    TAA - Robertson - Vinagre - Taylor - (Lamptey)
    KDB - Salah - Mount - ASM - (4.5)
    Werner - Martial - (4.5)

Hope it's right but the fact that link is to ESPN an America company doesn't full me with confidence that's it's correct.

          Also stating
          - How PL has managed to fit all 38 rounds in
          - How the cup competitions fit
          - Why there's a round 18a and 18b
          - Internationals?

We already know all that !

I've enjoyed this period. And I think I've made some progress on deciding what structure/which players are value by engaging in discussion.

Building a GW 1 team is a process. And I feel like I've made progress 🙂

Yeah absolutely. We have had time to familiarise ourselves with price points and what combinations are possible. We’re not going to suddenly decide KDB, Bruno and Salah aren’t worth bothering with because they play a top 6 side in GW1 or 2. If you’re going purely off of fixtures you are gonna have some serious upset.

    McCarthy (Ryan)
    TAA / Saliba / Vinagre (Ayling / 4.0)
    Mason / Auba / KDB / Son / Pereira
    Werner / Mitro (4.5)

I will probably get Ramsdale when he’s available at 5.0.

It will come down to, Auba/Salah, but hopefully the fixture release will help me out with that decision.

This year I think I want to play it differently - instead of rotating 4.5 defenders, i will try to rotate premium mids depending on their fixtures to do, in LR words, upside chasing. Auba at 12.0, and the emergence of bruno and the ever explosiveness of raheem made me thinking that way.

So bring on the fixtures already!

I get people tinkering with teams, but I don’t get the idea of posting a RMT with no fixtures in play.

Even those making sure their ‘structure is in place’ if for example City start off with the 5 worst teams in a row, guaranteed structure flies out the window.

How do people feel about ownership?

Obviously v. fixture dependant, but there's a chance that I'll think my 'best' team (i.e the one with my highest perceived points expectation) to start to season is one without either KDB or Bruno in it. At present these have ~62% and ~42% ownership respectively, and with their current status as top FPL scorer from the previous season and MUN darling respectively, it's unlikely the influx of another 4m more 'casual' players will change that materially.

Should I be sacrificing some of what is in my opinion positive points expectation to reduce the risk of ruin in the first few gameweeks if variance isn't on my side?

    What do people think?

Don't care, haven't checked. I play my own game. It only becomes relevant for me at the end of the season if I'm top of my ML and trying to stave off a rival.

I look at EO after deadline in order to add excitement. Before deadline, ownership has almost zero impact on my decision.

If I feel Kevin will score more, pick him. If I feel Connolly will score more, I'll pick him.

Mathematically EO shouldn't come into your thiking as you are looking to maximise pints, but I read this article a few days ago that says the opposite:

      https://whichtransfer.wordpress.com/2015/05/30/the-forgotten-statistic/

FWIW minimising variance is a common goal among top poker and chess players (with the idea in mind that if you are good at the game, you will eek out an advantage on the close calls), so why shouldn't it be a strategy in FPL too?

Thanks for the interesting article, will read it in the free time! I've been thinking about the ownership problem for a very long time and haven't come with the right answer so far...

Thanks - I’d read that same article and one other which has triggered the thinking.

In seasons past I’ve tended to have high ownership picks almost by accident because I thought they were the best options. This season I feel KDB is overpriced somewhat and there is better value elsewhere but it’ll be very expensive if I’m wrong...

I’m trying to maximise points expectation, but what I’m really trying to do is beat all of the other players. Should what they are doing enter into my thinking at all?

Poker and chess are two very different games.
I don't play poker, but I gather that it is about statistical probability and reading your opponents' minds better than they can read yours.
Chess however is about certainty, depth of understanding of the game and of the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, preparation and being able to out-calculate the opponent in the time available.
Making the most of minimal advantages is of course important in both games, but I would think that variance is far more relevant to poker than it is to chess.

I check throughout the season out of interest but I don't let it hold me back. Last season I dropped KDB for example despite being the highest own player.

It's hard to differentiate between the noobs and the serious players at this stage too so won't let it effect me. I remember a few seasons back Zaha was like 40% owned or something at the start of the season when he got reclassified and flopped massively. Like now KDB is 60% and Sterling is below 10%. I'm more than happy with Raz.

    6. Free Hat
      • 5 Years

Good point. Thinking about it myself.

Was suprised to see Sterling at a very low ownership and was set on him first. But imo a 60proc kdb is almost impossible to ignore.

I think a good start to the first gws is really important and if a 60proc ownership player does well, you are chasing even before the season begins.

On the other hand Sterling can perform better than KDB and that will give you a headstart vs the rest.

Either way, its basically willing to take the risk to go in against the herd and be different, take the gamble.

Im still not sure which way Im taking, probably the safer way with a Salah, kdb, bruno vs the Sterling, Greenwood,... Way.

But whomever you choose, there are a lot of good players and ways to gain points. There is no 'bad' choice. Just hope you get the right one.

Is martial really worth 0.5 over jimmy? The latter is on pens, super consistent compared to hot n cold tony, main man of attack while tony will probablyshare points with other United attackers.

I'd rather find a slot for greenwood if I can't reach for bruno or rashford.

Martial offers a genuine captain option at times, so i'd favour him. Jimenez ticks along nicely, but has such a low ceiling.

Bruno scored 20 goals in 33 games in the league at Sporting in his last full season there. Last season, he got 16 in 31 including 8 in 14 in the league. He's going above 0.5g/game and that's elite.

I think he can very realistically get between 15-20 goals next season. Penalties he'll get a lot of, but his open play stats aren't bad either.

      Super template.

I intend to be aggressive out the gate. Which means no super high ownership defenders, doubling up on attackers aggressively with good fixtures and leaving spots for value players.

Having a bunch of 4.5m defender slots is great because it allows you to pivot to the best value players early that are showing promise.

Likewise in midfield at the 8.0-6.0 price point. If a Greenwood or a Foden explode your structure has you completely hamstrung.

Perhaps your team would score amazing if it was a ghost team, but you're not a ghost. Take some aggressive punts, leave players at aggressive price points so you can pivot smoothly and attack the fixtures instead of getting the bog standard Salah, KdB, Fernandes. The likes of Ziyech, Greenwood, Mount, even Son, Rashford etc.

Some, like me going 5 at the back, some one up top. Even with similar structure, plenty of variety among 8.5+ strikers, premium mids. I think there will more diversity in squads that I've seen before.

Always worth reminding ourselves that template on here doesn't necessarily equate to template for the wider game, too. It's not just herd mentality - it's a lot of active, knowledgeable players coming to similar conclusions!

I like the "doubling up on attackers aggressively with good fixtures" a lot.

However, I don't like refusing to own players simply because they are too template or too highly owned. If a player is the best option of his kind, I want to own him regardless of whether others own him or don't.

The article LateRiser quotes says "In 2019/20 he recorded an expected goals (xG) per 90 figure of 0.62. Robert Lewandowski and Ciro Immobile were the only players across the Premier League, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 to record a better score there."

I think it's safe to assume that's wrong given that LateRiser later says himself that Aguero's xG per 90 figure was 0.95 (which is insane btw).

Another thing to consider is the 'accusation' that he scored well against teams playing high line of defence.. is it true or myth? If there's a truth in it the n there's a chance he'd struggle against tough nuts like Burnley SHU Palace and maybe Leeds...

Vardy was actually very effective against those 2 teams last season.

From what I’ve seen he is similar to Vardy but more involved in teamplay and the build-up rather than just making runs. (Which might not be a good thing for Fpl). I haven’t watched him loads in bundesliga, mainly in CL though which might change things compared to how he plays in bundesliga.

I was questioning the original article (David Munday's I think?), not your statament. I got confused because Aguero's xG per 90 is actually 0.96, which is practically the same as the 0.95 goals per 90 🙂

So back to my original question - if Aguero had 0.96 xG per 90, then surely Werner isn't third in that category behind only Lewndowski and Immobile? Unless there's a minimum cut-off point as was suggested.

Pretty much decided on the spine of the team
    Ryan Button
    TAA Vinagre C.Taylor Douglas DEF
Salah Auba KDB MID1 MID 2
    Werner Bamford FW

Which option looks best with this team ?? (considering only 1 nailed player required on bench)
    A) Diop, Maddison / 7.0 MID, Stephens, K.Davies
    B) Ake, ASM, Soucek, K.Davies
    C) Ferguson, ASM, Soucek, Mitro

Will use Auba/ Salah and 2FT as a pivot to upgrade my team (any position) as the season proceeds

When Aguero is back, we he take penalties instead of KDB? I know KDB is elite even without pens, but that might mean I get Aguero and Greenwood rather than KDB and Antonio...

If those GW1 fixtures that were supposedly leaked turn out to be true, I expect to see Son and Kane in a lot of teams.

    Villa at home...

Do you think Son is worth starting with over Mahrez or Ziyech. Realise I can stretch to him but have looked at Son's record and he tends to score in patches so I might just pick him after his first goal. Not sure if that makes sense though. Fixtures will give away more.

I’m going to go with him from the off.
It’s at that sort of price where it’s easy enough to jump ship.

Cheers Galza, food for thought. Always enjoy seeing your lineups, tend to differ from the crowd.

I had Kane in from the start last year because of fixture. Didn't turn out so well...not going down that road again.

Yes, it would be a trap.

FiveThirtyEight's rankings based on xG have Spurs as only the 8th best attacking team in the league, about on par with Leicester and Saints, and not that far ahead of relegated Bournemouth and Watford:

Check in the members area. Doosra's table for leaky defences. Use any criterion you want, but only during restart

      Villa will surprise you

I know they did tighten up a fair bit, but you’d still have to fancy Spurs.

Galza, it's far beyond "a fair bit". Shocked my socks off, especially with the consistency regardless of their GK changes

The leaked fixtures had bth Manchester sides at home in gw1. I think they always alternate home fixtures.

This is why fixtures can sometimes be a hindrance and distraction. Atm we're picking players and structures over a medium period of time

That said, they've got pedigree. Kane's double v AVL still fresh in the mind and Son has a lovely price at 9, but compared with the choice this year? Difficult to squeeze in

Very tempted to go Salah-less. Which do you prefer?
    A) Salah and mitrovic
    B) son/pulisic/ziyech and martial

salah has been the top midfield scorer for the past 3 years....it's not even a debate for me. His stats are ridiculous. He Shoots and shoots and shoots and shoots.

Set and forget and watch the points come in

Cheapest forwards likely to start regularly? Charlie Austin at 5.5?

Bamford as well - Austin a much better finisher but not sure he has the legs any more at his age and after the injuries he's had

Bamford is your guy I think. If Brewster gets his loan move, probably be him at 4.5.

    Hi guys, just signed up

    Any thoughts on this team?

    Ryan - Nyland
TAA Doherty KWP - Mitchell Ferguson
    Salah Mane Son Armstrong Trossard
    Jimenz Wood - Davis
    1.5ITB

This gives me cash to change Son and Mane/Salah to KDB and Fernandes once Manchester team games start.

Thinking I could change Doherty to Vinagre to give me 3.0ITB which would enable me to switch one of Armstrong or Trossard to pick up Martial/Werner/Ings

Why would you not have Button as your back up if you go for Ryan?

      1. Back2Basics
        • 3 Years
        3 years, 8 months ago

Because I want to have Trossard and I never start the season with 3 of any team. Too much needed to change if there is someone who hits form etc. I like the look of Maupay, and a second season should be better for him.

I do see the point though, but I just don't want to waste 2 club spaces on GK's

Well, there goes that idea with the fixtures. No chance of starting with any Brighton assets now.

    McCarthy Nyland
    TAA Saliba Vinagre Taylor Ferguson
    Salah KDB Son Greenwood Soucek
    Werner Mitrovic 4.5
