I hope useless Southgate gets his medicine for leaving out Shaw and Chilwell and trying to be too clever. They are excellent LBs but Southgate thought he'd be a smart ass and play Trippier just for set piece.

Everyone is a tactical expert these days

Trippier has played almost half his games at international level in this position. He’s tried and tested for Southgate

He offers set pieces and has been deployed to go against his team mate on the same side

Not saying it’s a great move but there has to be an understanding of why the decision was made. It’s the opening game. He’s not going to take risks.

I'm not a tactical expert in the slightest. Football is opinion at the end of day and I understand your points. Hopefully I'm wrong it just seems a little bit like one of those Pep like moves with might backfire.

It's slim pickings for my captain choice today- Wijndal or Alioski. I think I might go Allioski and hope for a clean sheet and a pen. I think he has the higher ceiling. I've got Torres and Ronaldo left as captain options so it could be worth a punt. What do you think?

Will probably make me eat my words by scoring a hat-trick now, but disappointed to see Sterling start ahead of Grealish.

Grealish seems a better player because if you are Croatia you are worried when he has the ball, but also if he makes a run behind. With Sterling, you can just sit deep (and Croatia are playing away from home) and nullify his threat as his passing and dribbling isn't all that.

This guy will probably make a howler now, but I think Phillips is a good player. He is used to high intensity, but also being left exposed at the back / counter-attacking situations (because of Leeds' attacking approach).

Yeah he is mate, to be honest I’d have played Rashford in Sterling’s position so he can stretch the play and get in behind, with Grealish the other side and out Foden in midfield the David Silva position he’s played before for City and just have Rice Holding with Mount the other side.

No. That is why I wanted Grealish and Chilwell/Shaw to start. I am pleased that Phillips starts though.

Grealish is a handful. He wins cheap free-kicks and can take the pressure off us with his on-the-ball play. I don't like seeing right-footed players playing at LB, especially when you have natural LBs available.

What is the point of taking Shaw if Trippier is going to play LB when Chilwell is not available?

I agree on the first part. He has been poor by his standards. Grealish has been injured for most of the season. He hasn't got much international experience. It would have been insult to play Grealish today ahead of Sterling. He has great work rate and I can see him involved in the goals today.

England's defence as a group looks solid. Mings, Stones, Walker, Trippier all part of teams that kept a lot of CS this season.

But, the issue is they aren't the best at concentrating for 90 mins (i.e. they have an individual error in them). See for example Mings vs Fulham where he gifted Mitrovic a goal or Stones' RC vs Villa. Even going back to the World Cup in 2018, Walker making a mistake to gift Tunisia a penalty.

      Why?

Mount, Foden and Sterling all have plenty of assists in them?

England have a weakness with Mings instead of Maguire at CB.

Croatia's midfield is much stronger than Englands.

Southgate has started two advanced attackers who can drop in Mount and Foden. He has also started two defensively sound fullbacks who can drop into the centre or bolster midfield. This formation can easily switch to 4-4-2 or 5-3-2 as required.

Southgate knows what he is doing.

I think England will win. I just don’t think that is the best XI he could have picked. The theory is there though.

A lot of the tactics comes from Steve Holland, and he certainly knows what he's doing after working with Conte and Jose. Got to trust the experts.
