I reckon a couple of them where De Gea got a hand to them were saveable. The Villareal GK was also crap (see Fernandes and Shaw penalties). But turns out De Gea is worse.

He is an underdog manager. He does well with teams where expectations are low. As we saw with PSG and Arsenal, when he is expected to deliver, he doesn't. PSG capitulated when the pressure was on. Much like Emery.

He was continuing the rot that started under Wenger. The defence was atrocious. "Defense wins you championships".

Man City buy Laporte and Dias. Liverpool buy VVD. Man Utd buy Maguire. Chelsea buy / sign Thiago Silva.

          Arsenal buy David Luiz. smh.

Arteta has stabilised the defence. Next test for Arteta is does he have the guts to drop Willian, Ceballos, Xhaka etc and play ESR, Saka, Pepe, Elneny ahead of them.

    2. diesel001
      • 9 Years
      5 years, 1 month ago

Nah. The weak links are: Lindelof (he is too slow to partner Maguire and he doesn't have Maguire's leadership), right wing (just sign Sancho or Raphinha), and Fred / Pogba (sign Declan Rice).

      1. Bushwhacker
        • 7 Years

But Maguire is bang average. They need a proper CB. Ole is way out of his depth, relying on Fernandes to bail you out every week isn't going to last.

        1. diesel001
          • 9 Years
          5 years, 1 month ago

Maguire is not bang average. He is captain of a team that has finished 2nd in the PL and got to a EL final.

Maguire is slow. He cannot be paired with another slow defender (i.e. Lindelof). Sign a quick CB who will be led by Maguire (as captain and leader of the defence) to allow the defence to play a higher line.

            • 7 Years

Bang average was being kind. It was a freak season, they had few injury issues, Fernandes bailed them out endlessly, they got knocked out of the Champions League and as everyone is saying in all reality in a normal season they aren't near City, Liverpool or Chelsea. They just lost to a team that finished 7th in La Liga . . .

      It's not too inaccurate.

The city has 50,000 people and has never won a European trophy, ever.

Manchester is 10x that and they've won a fair number more, not to mention the domestic success.

thats true ole is a novice when compared to most managers

but club vs club the comment isnt out of line when compared one is clearly a goliath and the other a david.

I agree in general when compared to the European powerhouses United dont really match up and arent a goliath in that regard. but then Liverpool are the only English powerhouse in Europe.
United are clear second and the rest are far behind, still trying to catch even the old greats like Forest etc.

Have the rules around how takes the 11th penalty in a shootout changed ? I thought that after each team had taken 10, the players who took the first penalties took the next (not the keepers if they haven't already taken one).
