10:30 – CHELSEA ASSETS DROP IN PRICE
FPL 2023/24 player prices revealed: Live Tuesday updates 1

Raheem Sterling‘s £3.0m drop in starting price is the headline news from Chelsea’s four reveals.

The winger is now available for £7.0m, the cheapest he’s been in ten seasons.

There are parallels with Marcus Rashford’s dramatic reduction in cost last summer, the Manchester United man making a mockery of his price tag in 2022/23 with a double century of FPL points.

Sterling’s tallies of 10 attacking returns and 101 points last season were his worst since 2015/16.

But there’s hope that Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival can have a galvanising effect on the Blues after their disappointing 12th-place finish.

The opening fixtures for Chelsea, especially after Gameweek 1, are also very decent.

Elsewhere, full-backs Reece James and Ben Chilwell will have plenty of suitors at £5.5m, given the attacking license they could be afforded under their new boss – if they stay fit, of course.

We only need to cast our minds back to 2021/22 for proof of what James is capable of when not in the physio room: he racked up 14 attacking returns despite making just 22 starts.

Mykhailo Mudryk drops by half a million after a goalless start to life in west London but, like so many others in this Chelsea squad, he’ll be hoping for improved fortunes in a season free from the turmoil and European distraction that we saw in 2022/23.

11:00 – CHEAP ROUTE INTO NEWCASTLE DEFENCE

The availability of Sven Botman for just £4.5m catches the eye, particularly after Kieran Trippier was priced up at £6.5m yesterday.

Newcastle were ranked joint-first for fewest goals conceded and joint-second for most clean sheets recorded in the Premier League last season.

Botman, although he didn’t score, was also a threat from set plays, racking up 22 shots in the box – only six FPL defenders had more.

A tricky opening fixture run is a bit of a deterrent, as perhaps is UEFA Champions League involvement given the busier schedule it will create.

It’s certainly a factor to consider when it comes to Alexander Isak, who was given a small price hike to £7.5m, given that he’ll be sharing pitch-time with Callum Wilson at home and abroad.

Midfielders Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton remain at £6.0m, with the arrival of Sandro Tonali not thought to be the catalyst for Bruno’s return to a more advanced number eight role.

Pre-season may tell us differently, however.

12:00 – BOWEN BACK DOWN TO £7.0M

Jarrod Bowen is back down to the middle of the mid-price range after starting last season at £8.5m.

At £7.0m, he’s still half a million more expensive than he was at the start of his superb 2021/22 campaign, in which he scored a double-century of points.

The West Ham United winger was among the bottom three FPL midfielders for xG underachievement last season (-3.42), suggesting he left some goals in the tank.

Michail Antonio has dropped by the exact same amount and is now a £6.0m forward.

A waning force at 33 years old, he nevertheless managed to finish the season as David Moyes’ first-choice striker despite the arrival of competition in the form of the injury-prone Gianluca Scamacca and Danny Ings.

The penalty-taking Said Benrahma remains unchanged at £6.0m.

While spot-kicks are in the Algerian’s favour, you’re never completely sure he’s going to start: he made the squad for all 38 league games last season but only started 22 of them.

Nayef Aguerd at £4.5m is a bit of a footnote after Botman’s listing at the same price earlier.

13:00 – NO CHANGES FOR FOUR PALACE PLAYERS

It’s as you were for the four Crystal Palace players priced up this lunchtime.

Sam Johnstone, Tyrick Mitchell and Marc Guehi are all £4.5m routes into the Eagles’ backline, while Odsonne Edouard is once again a £5.5m forward.

Palace actually had the division’s fourth-best defence for expected goals conceded (xGC) last season.

Johnstone started the last nine matches of the campaign between the sticks, averaging a very respectable 4.0 points per game.

With Michael Olise an early-season injury doubt and Wilfried Zaha potentially on his way, Edouard could have less competition for his place in a fluid frontline – although it’d be a surprise if the Eagles didn’t dip into the transfer market.

14:20 – RASHFORD UP TO £9.0m
FPL 2023/24 player prices revealed: Live Tuesday updates 7

Marcus Rashford‘s best-ever season for FPL points has been rewarded/punished with a £2.5m starting price rise.

Having been £3.5m cheaper than team-mate Bruno Fernandes a year ago, he’s now half a million more expensive at £9.0m.

Rashford plundered 17 goals in 2022/23, a tally beaten only by Mohamed Salah among FPL midfielders.

Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot have been handed modest price rises to £5.5m and £5.0m respectively.

There weren’t too many attacking returns from the pair but lots of bonus points: a combined 39, as United finished up with more clean sheets than any other team.

Shaw was more of a secure starter than Dalot, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka eating into the latter’s game-time at right-back.

After two seasons of failing to crack double figures for attacking returns, Jadon Sancho continues to slide in price.

The England international is now £7.0m, having originally been £9.5m upon his move from Borussia Dortmund.

15:15 – TARKOWSKI STILL £4.5m
FPL 2023/24 player prices revealed: Live Tuesday updates 6

As was the case with Palace earlier in the day, we’ve got four non-movers at Everton.

The midfield trio of Alex Iwobi, Dwight McNeil and Abdoulaye Doucoure are unchanged at £5.5m, while James Tarkowski is still a £4.5m defender.

McNeil was one of the success stories under Sean Dyche, with nine of his 12 attacking returns in 2022/23 arriving after Frank Lampard departed.

Tarkowski began the Dyche era with a bang, registering a 15-pointer in the 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Everton’s increasing reliance on, and strength, at free-kicks and corners should be good news for the former Burnley centre-half.

16:15 – MODEST RISE FOR ESTUPINAN

Solly March has followed Kaoru Mitoma in rising to £6.5m and so too has Pascal Gross.

Gross finished as Brighton’s top points scorer in FPL, a total of 17 attacking returns his best ever.

His superior points tally was also partly about being ‘nailed’ for the whole campaign, the German making 37 starts in all.

But Messrs Mitoma (5.3) and March (4.7) averaged more points per start than Gross (4.3), who was often deployed in a deeper central midfield role or even at right-back.

Gross may, however, have designs on penalty-taking duties following Alexis Mac Allister’s departure.

Someone else on Albion’s books who has spot-kick experience is Pervis Estupinan, who delivered more returns (goals and assists plus clean sheets for defenders) than any of his team-mates in 2022/23.

He has risen to £5.0m, the price he ended last season at.

Danny Welbeck, who hasn’t scored more than six league goals in any of the last nine seasons, is available as a £6.0m forward.

17:00 – SOLANKE RISES

So long, Solanke?

The Bournemouth striker wasn’t without his appeal in 2022/23, a mid-season dip to £5.5m from a starting price of £6.0m meant that he began to be snapped up by managers playing a 3-5-2 and needing Blank Gameweek cover.

But a starting price rise to £6.5m, after a campaign in which he scored only six goals, will be a deterrent to many this time.

Solanke did at least rack up more assists (10) than any other forward; his overachievement (+4.59) on the expected assists front offset by the xG disparity (-3.22).

Luton’s Amari’i Bell remains the only £4.0m defender priced up so far after Bournemouth’s Illya Zabarnyi was listed at £4.5m.

Of the teams that survived, Bournemouth conceded the most goals and kept the joint-fewest clean sheets.

There’ll be little interest in Zabarnyi and there’ll be little interest in Joe Rothwell, who remains as a £5.0m midfielder despite contributing just one assist in 20 Premier League run-outs.

Hamed Traore, who was heavily involved at set plays in what little game-time injury allowed him, is also at £5.0m.

18:00 – MORENO UP TO £5.0m
FPL 2023/24 player prices revealed: Live Tuesday updates 10

We’ve now reached 80 players priced up for 2023/24, with Aston Villa the latest club to reveal the prices of four of their squad members.

Midfielder Aaron Ramsey and defender Alex Moreno, who have risen half a million to £6.0m and £5.0m respectively, may well be injured for Gameweek 1.

Ramsey looks set to miss the rest of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship with an ankle issue, while Moreno is making his way back from a hamstring injury.

Emi Buendia and compatriot Emi Martinez remain at the same starting prices, the former a £6.0m midfielder and the latter joining the ranks of the £5.0m goalkeepers.

18:20 – ‘EXCLUSIVE’ PRICE REVEALS INCLUDE ANOTHER £4.0m DEFENDER

FPL promised subscribers to their emails some exclusive price reveals, and eight have duly arrived this evening.

Another playing £4.0m defender is among them, following on from Amari’i Bell’s bargain-bin listing yesterday.

This time it’s Burnley centre-half Jordan Beyer, who looks about nailed as they come in the Clarets’ backline.

Vincent Kompany’s side had the best defensive record in the Championship last season.

Moving in the opposite direction is Neco Williams, now available for a pricier £4.5m despite questions over his game-time at Nottingham Forest.

There’s another positional change and it’s not a shock one, with Cody Gakpo reclassified as a £7.5m forward after being predominantly used as the spearhead of the Liverpool attack by Jurgen Klopp.

One of Chelsea’s new signings, Nicolas Jackson, is another new addition to the forward pool, this time coming in at £7.0m.

There are two goalkeeper additions, with Nick Pope promoted to the upper echelons of the £5.5m premium bracket and Sheffield United’s Wes Foderingham listed at £4.5m.

The instantly forgettable Allan Campbell and Jordan Ayew are both midfielders, priced up at £5.0m and £5.5m respectively.

Luton’s Campbell wasn’t even starting by the time the Hatters got to the play-offs, while Ayew delivered less than 10 attacking returns for the seventh time in eight seasons.

20:00 – SAKA RISES, HAVERTZ A MIDFIELDER

Kai Havertz has been reclassified as a midfielder following his move from Chelsea to Arsenal.

It’s a slight departure from how FPL usually recategorise players, with a player’s most-occupied position of the previous season (centre-forward in Havertz’s case) usually the deciding factor.

But it’s a sensible move, particularly as Mikel Arteta has all but told us that the German will be playing in midfield for the Gunners.

Havertz’s £7.5m price is intriguing, too, coming in one million cheaper than Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka.

Saka was another one of the four Arsenal players priced up tonight, coming in slightly cheaper than some of us had been expecting at £8.5m.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) and Gabriel Jesus (£8.0m) are identically priced to what they were 12 months ago.

20:05 – FOUR MORE ‘EXCLUSIVE’ PRICES REVEALED VIA THE APP

Where have all the £4.5m midfielders gone?

Harrison Reed is moved up by half a million as we still await our first lowest-tier option from midfield.

The Fulham man did, in fairness, contribute seven attacking returns last season, but he’ll be dead as a Fantasy option now as FPL bosses seek that elusive £4.5m playing option in the engine room.

Tyrone Mings (£4.5m) is a cheap-looking way into the Aston Villa backline but there’ll be concerns about his game-time with Pau Torres incoming and Diego Carlos back to full fitness.

Lukasz Fabianski drops back to being a £4.5m goalkeeper for the first time since 2018/19, while new Brighton and Hove Albion signing Joao Pedro has been classified as a forward and handed a budget £5.5m tag.

20:50 – NO MORE PRICE REVEALS TODAY

FPL have wrapped up their own liveblog so that’s us done for price reveals for the day.

We’re 96 players down already and there’ll be more to come on Wednesday – the game’s launch might even follow on the same day.

Sterling at 7m is nuts. If they start regularly, we could have a core that looks like:

    Bruno Son Sterling Salah
    Haaland Darwin

That would cost us an arm and a leg in seasons past.

Take your point, but that team would mean significant sacrifices in defence.

Assuming M5 and F3 are something like a 6.5/4.5 combo (in whatever order), and you spend 8.5 on two GK, I work out that leaves 22m for 5 defenders (so 4 x 4.5 plus a 4.0).

I still think Sterling at 7m is explosive enough to be highly worthy of consideration.

New manager in Poch might be able to get the best out of him again. He should be 8m at least imo considering his potential.

He's not a long term hold. He might be worth buying for one week only, if a good spot develops. He's unlikely to play the full 90 in any one game, and squad rotation, let alone form.

You seem to have completely blanked out how Chelsea and Spurs performed last year? Plus Darwin!

If anyone buys many of those players they are taking a chance. will they settle into the team/or will the team settle? Or have 'gone' as players like Michael Owen at Newcastle/Man United/Stoke?

Plus Bruno is a really hit and miss player blows hot and cold, also where will he be positionally - will he be on penalties.
      --
I think the pricing is good gives options conundrums, there is plenty of scope for variety. It is not as black and white as you make out.

I'm with you here - can't understand why people are getting excited over Chelsea players after the absolute disaster season they just had. The squad is still a mess with unknown quantities all over the pitch, and Poch hasn't had a good season since the first half of 2018/19 (how do you fail to win the league with PSG?)

Spurs have a new manager who's greatest achievement came in the Scottish Prem, a league that made Stevie G and Rodgers look like Guardiola. It will take a while for the squad to adjust to a completely different play-style from Conte, and they need to hope their signings hit the ground running (keeper's only played in Italy, Maddison has been hot-and-cold). Kane won't even be there next season, if he has any dignity.

Bruno had one of his best seasons last year (on the pitch) but his output took a hit due to playing further back. He should still be on penalties but I'm not sure he's an option over Rashford unless United get a DGW.

Certainly makes sense to keep an open mind and watch Chelsea and Spurs closely during the pre-season friendlies.
Even then, both new managers insist on high-intensity football and players won't be at optimal fitness at the start of the season.

I agree with most of that, but its just that both sides still have plenty of players with the potential to rake in some big hauls in GWs 3-5 (LUT NFO bou / bou bur SHU), so its a little tempting to take a risk on a Maddison / Nkunku. I would rather they had terible fixtures to start so I could wait & see, and I don't dare go for more than one attacker from either side, knowing it could easily fall flat, but still it looks a spot to at least consider rolling the dice

The annoying thing about Chelsea though is after Liverpool they have the fixtures, so looking purely at fixtures it is tempting.

But for example the Arsenal defenders are similar price to the Chelsea wingbacks. Who would you trust more defensively? Given the practicalities of a new side in Chelsea having to gel fast etc.

I'm not saying I'm gonna start with them. Darwin and Sterling are punts at this stage.

But the price means that if they can get a run of games and form they have explosive pedigree and probably should be priced higher as a result.

There is always the danger of living in the past with these kind of players. They remind you of how great they were for you back in the day. There are probably many examples of such players that never turned out to be anything like a bargain.

Not so much about the competition between White/Botman, just that it means there's no reason to look at defenders from outside the top 4 (unless they have a very strong attacking threat)

I find it funny when people complain that Arsenal are spending money. But they always seem to forget about wages.

Here are the top six teams listed by their average weekly salary per player from the lowest to the highest:

Good luck with selling Pepe lol. Should have bought Zaha instead

A lot of people don't know how FFP rules work *but it is complicated. Chelsea exposed a lot of it, as fans moan about not spending or spending too much when the transfer fee is divided over the length of the contract.

The official name for their FFP regulations — only permits cumulative pre-tax losses of £105m over three years.

Hope Eveton and Man City get there punishment soon. How long does an independent committee take?

      3. Arsenal - €371.41m
      4. Newcastle - €340.52m
      5. Spurs - €297.63m

Money had to be spent, whether you liked it or not. A lot of players were never good enough to get Arsenal back into the Top 4, let alone finish second. Now go and compare the squad depth of both clubs in 2020/2021, and tell me we didn't have to replace all of that deadwood. It's a bloody miracle how far we've come in 3 years.

Again, nobody is moaning about you spending money - the issue is when Arsenal fans (like Liverpool fans have done) like to play the role of the 'plucky underdog' who have barely been backed. If City had spunked £65m on Havertz (they wouldn't) and gave him £330kpw (they wouldn't), you lot would be the first to come out with the 'how can we compete' comments.

Anel can be attacking I think we'll struggle this year (Blades fan), need to see if we do anything in the transfer market. But iverakk would be nice if FPL players could actually be encouraged to consider our players (and Luton, Burnley etc.) apart from for fodder reasons. You can basically make a draft consisting of 11 starting players from big 6 teams atm which feels a bit dull.

Also a Blades fan, and while I agree we'll probably struggle, I think our defense will be decent. Even in our disastrous relegation season where we flirted for a while with Derby's low points total record, our defensive record compared to other whipping boys of the past wasn't that bad, and we tended to lose games by a goal or two at most. I don't think we'll be an easy team to break down, though I do think we won't score many goals (not that this will stop me starting with Iliman...)

Yeah I think that's fair, we should be relatively solid defensively (compared to our 19/20 PL season, Wes < Henderson, Anel > Bash, Robinson > JOC, Lowe < Stevens), mainly worry about the midfield. Just would be nice if FPL pricing could actually make me consider our players for non-fan reasons!

Just means half the teams in the league are irrelevant. Newcastle had the joint-best defence in the league last year (in terms of GA, level with City on 33) and you can get a nailed-on spot for sod-all - why would you bother looking at any of the teams outside of the top 9 or so?

I guess with set pieces and assist potential, along with being a bap magnet, he has the TAA type premium attached to him. Also he was in nearly everyone's team last year so maybe they put him on the higher end also to try and stop that this year.

Not sure why people think MacAllister is going to be a good option? He won't be on pens anymore and Liverpool's midfielders have one job and that's to get the ball to the fullbacks - he's basically going to be a better (on the pitch, not FPL) Henderson.

This "one job and that's to get the ball to the fullbacks" narrative you keep spewing is complete nonsense. They don't even play with attacking full backs anymore. Trent is inverted and the two #8s get high up the pitch a la Arsenal and City.

Curtis Jones is the only Liverpool midfielder who scored last year, 2 goals of which against a Leicester side who weren't even playing. Elliot got 2 assists.

            Trent - 9 assists
            Robertson - 8 assists

Yes but they only changed system for the last 8 games or so and the quality of the player can't be ignored. Mac Allister is so much better than Jones, Elliot and Henderson.

They changed system because they had literally zero midfielders. For all we know, Klopp will revert back to his old ways with Trent bombing forward - would make sense with chasing a third midfielder (Lavia) this window.

We'll see during preseason. The top two teams in the division were playing this system, it produced better results for Liverpool, and got the best out of Trent. Not sure why Klopp would move away from it now.

It probably means having at most 1 of Bruno, Son, Rashford, Saka, Martinelli, Foden, etc - so I do think there's some compromise, because if you opt for "onemium" instead, you can squeeze in 3 of those players reasonably comfortably

I usually do okay picking a first team for a new season of FPL - but I would be interested if the more experienced among us can share some top tips on choosing that initial squad or how to choose between similar players or similarly priced players etc.

For example should I go for saka martinelli or odegaard etc

Everyone's guessing at the beginning of the season as we don't know what sort of form teams and individuals will be in.

Don't overthink it, pick players at right price points which will allow you to do easy swaps with minimum number of required transfers.

My advice is that when you are torn on a decision, seek more information.

So look at stats, watch highlights etc, until a winner emerges.

If you ask for opinions you'll get a huge range of responses, that will get you no closer to a decision.

Just pick 15 players you enjoy watching and expect to do well at the start. If it doesn't pay off in a month, activate your wildcard and change half of it to the template team and half of it to those who you think will sooner or later become great options. You can still stick with a few who didn't deliver the goods yet and were perhaps just unlucky.

People just pick gw1 main players based on these factors -

      1) Fixtures
      2) Price
      3) Likely starter
      4) Preseason form
      5) Level of ownership

      --
      Normally in that order.

With the midfielders being priced reasonably overall - with some bargains like Bruno, Sterling, Mbeuno, Mitoma etc is anyone else thinking of Haaland and Kane? I've seen no mention of this with most edging towards Salah and Haaland.

Well I did not own Kane for much of last season, but I have a soft spot for him as I took a -12 gw38 and captained him. Kane was so consistent yet somehow he kept been ignored.

This pricing means that this game is planned for lazy idiots. We call them casuals. Haaland being 14 million sounds expensive, but when Botman (for example) is 4.5 instead of 5.0 and every other player is underpriced, there is no real challenge. Or luck has even more role than it used to.

You should pay price for doing that. Also, if players like Botman come at 4.5 they basically become auto picks with 99-100% ownership like Trippier last season.

Just thought of an alternative way FPL could start the new season - you pick players before prices are revealed.

If your picks are within budget you get 1 point per 0.5m underbudget.

If your team is overbudget you lose 1 point per 0.5m overbudget, and have to repick your team to fit the budget - using transfers that cost -4 like normal.

This way, the casuals would be at a major disadvantage as they wouldn't understand how to predict prices and would begin the season in the red - those with more experience are likelier to suffer less.

No rush to jump on Newcastle forwards with their opening fixtures imo. I'll wait til GW5/6 & if they're continuing the same way they finished get Wilson
