Euro 2020

Quiet night for Bale as Shaqiri hauls and heavily-rotated Italy win again

Italy 1-0 Wales

  • Goals: Matteo Pessina (€6m)
  • Assists: Marco Verratti (€6.5m)
  • Red card: Ethan Ampadu (€5m)

A much-changed Italy side maintained their 100% record by defeating Wales 1-0 with a Matteo Pessina goal.

The result sees Roberto Mancini’s side top the group whilst extending their unbeaten run to 30 matches, the last 11 of which have been without conceding a goal. Wales finish in second place, advancing to the round of 16.

Only three players remained in Mancini’s line-up – Gianluigi Donnarumma (€5.5m), Leonardo Bonucci (€5.5m) and Jorginho (€6m) – disappointing Euro Fantasy owners of Lorenzo Insigne (€8.5m), Ciro Immobile (€10m), Domenico Berardi (€6m) and Leonardo Spinazzola (€5.5m) by keeping them on the bench for all 90 minutes. Giorgio Chiellini (€6m) missed out with a hamstring problem acquired against Switzerland.

Goalkeeper Donnarumma was replaced in stoppage time but only as a kind gesture to back-up Salvatore Sirigu (€4.5m) and not injury-related. Taken off at half-time, Bonucci owners cruelly missed out on clean sheet points.

Usually regular starters, Italy have excelled in the two games without Federico Chiesa (€7m) and injured Marco Verratti. Both played here and were brilliant, with Chiesa constantly tormenting Neco Williams (€4.5m) down the right flank and providing crosses for Andrea Belotti (€8m). His own 24th-minute shot went narrowly wide.

Verratti provided the only goal, after being fouled by Joe Allen (€5.5m) out wide. His resulting free kick was guided into the far corner by Pessina, giving Italy a well-deserved lead from which Wales didn’t recover.

The 56th-minute red card for Ethan Ampadu made it tough, punished for a slightly late challenge that was deemed to be a stamp on Federico Bernardeschi’s (€7.5m) foot just minutes after the Italian hit the post with his own free kick.

However, the Welsh did have one golden chance to equalise through Gareth Bale (€9.5m). A free-kick was headed across goal, finding Bale in space around ten yards out. He volleyed it over the bar.

It didn’t make a difference for Robert Page’s men, who finished second regardless and secured a round-of-16 meeting with the Group B runner-up – likely Russia, Finland or Denmark. Page changed to a wing-back system, with Ampadu, Williams and Chris Gunter (€5m) replacing a Kieffer Moore (€6.5m), Chris Mepham (€4.5m) and Ben Davies (€5.5m) trio that were one booking away from a suspension.

Italy will fly to Wembley to face the Group C runner-up, whether it be the Netherlands, Ukraine or Austria.

It will be interesting to see whether Mancini keeps Verratti and Chiesa in his team, possibly at the expense of talented Sassuolo duo Manuel Locatelli (€5.5m) and Domenico Berardi (€6m) who were outstanding during Italy’s 3-0 victories against Turkey and Switzerland. Either way, Italy look relentless.

Italy XI (4-3-3): Donnarumma (Sirigu 90’); Tolói, Bonucci (Acerbi 46’), Bastoni, Emerson; Pessina (Castrovilli 87’), Jorginho (Cristante 75’), Verratti; Chiesa, Belotti, Bernardeschi (Raspadori 75’)

Wales XI (3-5-2): Ward; Gunter, Rodon, Ampadu; C Roberts, Morrell (Moore 60’), Allen (Levitt 86’), Ramsey, N Williams (B Davies 86’); James (Wilson 75’), Bale (Brooks 86’)

Federico Chiesa terrorised Neco Williams down Italy’s right flank and he also contributed four goal attempts from inside the box (‘Attempts’ ‘In’, above). Entering the tournament as one of their star players, Chiesa had to wait patiently for his chance over the equally impressive Domenico Berardi. There will be quite a dilemma ahead for Roberto Mancini ahead of their round of 16 clash.

World-class midfielder Marco Verratti also missed the first two matches but quickly showed his quality by creating five chances (CC, above) for his teammates, more than anyone else on the pitch.

Switzerland 3-1 Turkey

  • Goals: Haris Seferovic (€8.5m), Xherdan Shaqiri (€7m) x2 | Irfan Kahveci (€5.5m)
  • Assists: Steven Zuber (€7m) x3 | Hakan Calhanoglu (€8.5m)

Wales held onto second place despite Switzerland’s best attempts to overtake them on goal difference, with Xherdan Shaqiri inspiring a 3-1 victory over lifeless Turkey.

Having reached the round of 16 in their previous three tournaments, the Swiss would have expected the same this time but were unconvincing against Wales and Italy. They started poorly here too, with Cengiz Under (€7m) and Kaan Ayhan (€5m) forcing very early saves from goalkeeper Yann Sommer (€5m).

Defender Mert Muldur (€4.5m), one of three changes made by Turkey, constantly roamed forward and forced numerous stops from Sommer. The pre-tournament dark horses finally looked like the side who conceded just three times in qualifying and recently defeated the Netherlands.

Then Shaqiri showed up. Steven Zuber, too. The first goal was by Haris Seferovic, given a loose ball by Zuber and placing a shot into the far corner from outside the area.

By the 26th minute, Switzerland were 2-0 up. Seferovic’s shot was blocked, Zuber picked up the loose ball and enabled Shaqiri to curl a delightful shot past Ugurcan Çakir (€4.5m) from the edge of the box. It should have been 3-0 soon after, with Shaqiri sent through on goal but denied by the foot of Cakir.

Turkey pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute with another long-range strike, this time by Irfan Kahveci. Twisting past Ricardo Rodriguez (€5.5m) a few times, his left-footed shot sailed into the far corner.

Kahveci and Muldur were two of Turkey’s three changes to the starting XI alongside defender Merih Demiral (€5m). Of those replaced, at least Okay Yukuslu (€5.5m) and Kenan Karaman (€6.5m) made substitute appearances, as did playmaker Yusuf Yazici (€5.5m).

Zuber was handed his first Swiss start of the summer and soon made history, providing the assist for Shaqiri’s second goal and becoming only the third player in European Championship history to set up three goals in one match (alongside Michael Laudrup in 1984 and Manuel Rui Costa in 2000).

Here, his low cross found Shaqiri unmarked in the penalty area for a simple, left-footed finish. Switzerland impressed here and their four points should be enough to qualify for the round of 16. Five years ago, the six third-placed sides totalled either three or four points.

There was a stoppage-time appearance from Kevin Mbabu (€5m), who was dropped from the initial line-up with Fabian Schar (€5m).

Switzerland XI (3-4-2-1): Sommer; Elvedi, Akanji, Rodríguez; Widmer (Mbabu 90’), Xhaka, Freuler, Zuber (Benito 85’); Shaqiri (Vargas 75’); Embolo (Mehmedi 86’), Seferovic (Gavranovic 75’)

Turkey XI (4-2-3-1): Çakir; Çelik, Demiral, Soyunçu, Muldur; Ayhan (Yokuslu 64’), Tufan (Yazici 64’); Ünder (Karaman 80’), Kahveci (Kokcu 80’), Calhanoglu (Tokoz 86’); Burak Yilmaz

When Xherdan Shaqiri is on form, he is a marvellous attacking threat. The Liverpool man had seven goal attempts, mostly long-range. He’s coming into form at the right time and Switzerland will heavily rely on him if they are to progress beyond the round of 16.

Steven Zuber ended the night with three assists and has surely cemented his name onto the teamsheet. Playing as a left wing-back, Zuber was extremely far forward when creating chances. The Swiss looked devoid of ideas in their first two games but the Shaqiri-Zuber-Seferovic combination worked wonders here.

Unlimited transfers between MD3 and MD4.
also an extra 5.0m to your budget.

To accommodate all the teams knocked out.

Similar for me (Malinovski instead of Yaremchuk, Malen instead of Depay).

      Currently on KDB.
      Think it will stay there.

If you're not captaining one of the best attacking sides vs the weakest defence, then go ahead and give up on some crazy upsides. The 2 Belgiums probably aren't even gonna last 60 min plus Finland aren't that trash at defending.

Also bold of you to assume Finland defence will be so easily scored against especially without Lukaku. Which is why you had Torres captained right? because Ukraine weren't "clear" cappers. Just because you're North Macedonian (i think) and you refuse to cap against your own country...

Not saying Dutch are a bad captain option, but it’s not as clear cut as you think imo. Consider me biased or whatever you want, but I’ll admit our defence isn’t great. The team have pressure off and will playing to give Pandev a proper send off, so don’t expect them to roll over like Turkey did. De Boer’s defensive tactics don’t give me any confidence to cap any Dutch players, I feel that Belgium team has much more quality and have a much higher ceiling. Finland’s defence is not all that much better than Macedonias

I don't really think 3-5-2 is playing defensive considering how high their FBs go up. Their games so far also haven't suggested that they are defensive. Lukaku not playing is the main reason against capping KDB as he is the key to their attack. KDB/Lukaku would be the clear pick if Lukaku were playing.

Why would they need Lukaku to play for KDB to do well? If Lukaku is absent then it gives KDB all the more reason to go for goal himself like he did v Denmark when he got subbed on. Don’t forget KDB plays in the front 3 for Belgium, not behind the front 3 like at City

You like to underestimate the impact of Lukaku on the 2 goals scored against Denmark. There's a reason he was star of the match.

              I agree.
First and foremost I expect De Boer to copy Mancinis approach, but should he be 'stupid' enough to play his strongest XI I would expect the biggest stars to come off at half time (Depay, Wijnaldum, Dumfries, De Liegt).
Would be of no use to Netherlands to win this match but go into the RO16 with an injury to one of those.

Jota does look too cheap, 8.5 would have seemed realistic, even 8.0 would have looked cheapish…

When you combine it with the rise for Salah, and no decrease for Mane or Firmino, it makes very little sense

Imagine if there’s an injury or loss of form to any of the front 3 - Jota will have 100% ownership at that price

Raphinia takes the biscuit for underpricing (so far) though

      1. Sgt Frank Drebin
        • 7 Years
        2 years, 10 months ago

Yeah I agree. And to be honest, Jota will be probably so heavily owned that he will not make much difference. Firmino's price is yet another year quite surprising, even at 8m he wouldn't have high ownership, at 9m he won't be selected by anyone at the start of the season.

Iheanacho also seems to be a no brainer. 7.5m for a guy with such stats is such a value. I would probably even consider him if he was 9m.

Jota, Iheanacho and Raphinha and you have quite good team, too bad that most of the teams will be pretty template though.

*As in why is Bruno cheaper than Salah & Kane

To be fair I could have put that better

And Bruno’s price is actually correct in isolation, it’s just bonkers when compared to Salah & Kane who should blatantly also be 12.0’s

Bruno 0.5 less than I thought, keepers look decently priced (Pope becomes more and more overpriced), Martial and Greenwood with potential.

Next up should be Aston Villa for those interested. Will be around 10am if they match the schedule from yesterday.

Dean Henderson is an excellent price. Some competition for Sanchez for sure there

Mason Greenwood & Cavani are fair value and will be in and out of my squad as and when form/fixtures and their starting places align.

Martial will need to move away to justify 8m.

Shaw at 5.5 surely means that Digne and Chilwell can't be 6.0, but let's see. Lingard at 7.0 if he goes to another club is decent. I think Live FPL predictions were spot on until United was revealed.

Template already set in stone with those Villa & Everton fixtures + Raphinia’s price

Unless they do something stupid like make Grealish or DCL 9.0’s it’s going to be:

        Sanchez
        TAA, ___, ___
        Salah, Bruno, Grealish, Raphinia
        DCL, Watkins, ___

            Probably 1.0 cheaper… Buendia was great in champo - but he’s a 30m player - Grealish is a 100m player, captain & talisman

Although he could yet move away, in which case yeah he drowns as an FPL option in the deep tempestuous rotation pools of City or Chelsea

Very true, might be a wait and see situation. On the grealish staying, interesting interview with emi Martinez yesterday stating how the club want to push on next season, and how Jack Grealish wants to be part of it. Coupled with the ITK’s stating he is not going anywhere in keeping everything crossed as a villa fan...

They've been kind to us with Bruno there, although it only claws back the 0.5m overpricing of Salah and we will likely start the season with both anyway so the net result is the same on our budgets.

The real surprise is Shaw, 5.5m for, if I remember correctly, the most creative fullback in the second half of last season, seems very generous. Especially when you see Robertson at 7m.

There appear to be a few blatantly underpriced options emerging which may contribute to a strong opening template - Raphina, Sanchez, Shaw in particular. Coupled with the strong captaincy options of Salah and Fernandes, and TAA who is always a good bet, thats about 6 players locked in already!

Think Salah & Bruno should have been 24.0 for the pair, but Bruno was the one of two who warranted a 12.5 if either of them were going to get it

If Salah gets hit by the witchdoctor for he third year running it’s going to be fun times

      2. Botman and Robben

Why do you say the 0.5 overpricing of Salah? Mo at any less than 12.5 would have enormous ownership.

Do you not think it’s a bit (nay, a lot) inconsistent the way they’ve made him 11.5 in light of his performances though?

His price rise just looks so jarring when compared to his price last year, and performance this year:

          303 > 259 > 233 > 231 > ???
          9.0 > 13.0 > 12.5 > 12.0 > 12.5

          1. Botman and Robben
            • 7 Years

His performances have dipped but he was so much above the rest 3 seasons ago that even with scoring less points as time has gone on, he is still one of the very best FPL options in the game.

No arguments about his status - it’s the pricing inconsistency that’s the issue - his price makes no sense when lined up with his scores, his previous prices, and the prices and scores of other players

Son scores 230 and gets 10.0… Salah scores *less*than last season and gets a price *increase*, and is 2.5 more than Son, 0.5 more than Bruno (who has wiped the floor with him as an FPL asset for a season & a half now)

Nothing we can do about it, but it just looks silly

Yep, although given Liverpools starting fixtures going without him looks a folly, despite the overpricing. Son would be a great cheaper alternative, it it wasn't for the fact Spurs are a joke at the moment, managerless, and with the status of their best player unknown. Son also scored a big bulk of his points in the mad covid addled and penalty bonanza start to last season aswell, so I'm not sure if 230 is reachable again.

What MBP says below is the reason. He scored less than he did when he was priced at 12, so why is going up 0.5m justified? doesn't make sense.

Liverpool as a whole look overpriced. TAA and Robbo scored significantly less than their last 2 campaigns, yet have been priced the same. Its like the fact they didn't win at home for 3 months has been scrubbed from the FPL towers memory!

Greenwood, Jota, Raphinha, Trossard, Pepe - the 6.5-7.5 midfield options are starting to look v interesting. 2 at that bracket and 2 of Salah/Fernandes/KDB looking likely.

Fair to say that Dumfries, if he starts, has the highest floor and ceiling out of these options?

    A. KDB
    B. Depay
    C. Dumfries
    D. Malen

So. With Ukraine playing at 5pm and Belgium at 8pm I have a dilemma over captain. I have Yaremchuk, Yarmolenko and De Bruyne but obviously have to make my decision before the Belgium lineup is known so who would you go for?

I think we can safely say KDB will play at least 45mins game time regardless of if he starts or not. I'm making my decision based on that.
